Character Stories#

The main story of Octopath Traveler II consists of eight independent tales, and the first letters of the eight protagonists’ names spell out OCTOPATH. Every new save file requires choosing one of the eight as the protagonist, and that character cannot leave the party until their own story is complete; the other seven can be met and recruited in any order. This chapter profiles each traveler — identity, homeland and story summary — to reference when picking your starter and planning your route through the narrative.

Hikari Ku — Warrior#

Hikari Ku comes from the desert region of Hinoeuma and is the crown prince of the kingdom of Ku. After the events that upended his homeland, he chose to flee, aiming at nothing less than overthrowing the throne — held by his brutal half-brother Mugen. This is a straightforward tale of kingship and reclaiming one’s honor, and the Warrior job also makes him a standard pick for the party’s front-line physical combat.

Agnea Bristarni — Dancer#

Agnea Bristarni comes from the Leaflands, and her job is Dancer. Following in the footsteps of her late mother, she is determined to become a dazzling star; along the way she also traces her mother’s past with the current superstar Dolcinaea, and must ultimately defeat that rival face to face in competition. The keywords of this line are the stage, inheritance and self-proof.

Partitio Yellowil — Merchant#

Partitio Yellowil was born in the Wildlands, and his job is Merchant. His goal is refreshingly direct — eliminate poverty, and share prosperity with all of Solistia. On his journey he must settle accounts with his former mentor Roque Brilliante, secure the rights to the steam engine, and force the man to honor his promise. The backdrop of an industrial revolution shows up most directly in this line.

Osvald V. Vanstein — Scholar#

Osvald V. Vanstein is a Scholar from the Winterlands. He was framed by his colleague Harvey and imprisoned for the murder of his wife Rita and daughter Elena. After breaking out of prison, he pursues the true culprit — Harvey experimented on his wife and abducted his daughter. This line closes as a story of revenge and salvation, ending with the rescue of his daughter.

Throné Anguis — Thief#

Throné Anguis comes from the Brightlands, and her job is Thief. (Chinese fan translations render her name several ways; this site keeps the English name.) From childhood she belonged to the Blacksnakes assassin guild, and to escape the bloodshed and cruelty she sought freedom by stealing the key to her own collar. The endpoint of this line is utterly dark: the true guild leader she finally kills, Claude, is her own father.

Temenos Mistral — Cleric#

Temenos Mistral comes from the mountains of the Crestlands, and his job is Cleric — yet he never stops questioning faith in the gods. His main story is a mystery case: investigating the murder of his archbishop, exposing the Moonshade Order, and defeating the mastermind Kaldena — the one who arranged the murder and tried to harness the power of darkness.

Ochette — Hunter#

Ochette comes from the isle of Toto’haha, and her job is Hunter. After disaster struck her homeland, she set out to find the three legendary Beasts of legend. This line’s ending carries a heavy price: in the end she must kill the one companion she did not choose — the very creature that brought calamity upon her home.

Castti Florenz — Apothecary#

Castti Florenz’s homeland is the Harborlands, and her job is Apothecary. She has lost her memory, and the only clue left to her points to Eir’s Apothecaries. Along the way she pursues her former comrade Trousseau — a man who destroyed a village with poison rain and threatened another town. Amnesia, identity and the apothecary’s mission intertwine; it is the most “cold case” of the eight lines.

The Thematic Spectrum of the Eight Lines#

Lining up the eight stories by narrative tone reveals the range this game covers:

Tone Protagonist line In one sentence
Classic hero’s journey Hikari Escape, tempering, reclaiming a throne
Bright coming-of-age Agnea From a village stage to stardom across the continent
Ideal of an era Partitio Answering poverty with commerce and the steam engine
Drama of vengeance Osvald False conviction, prison break, truth and a rescued daughter
Dark edge Throné Guilds, collars, and a patricide ending
Cool deduction Temenos A faith-questioning cleric works a murder case down to the Moonshade Order
Myth and nature Ochette An isle’s calamity and the price of the legendary Beasts
Mystery and healing Castti An amnesiac apothecary and the poison-rain cold case

Read in alphabetical order — Agnea, Castti, Hikari, Ochette, Osvald, Partitio, Temenos, Throné — the initial letters assemble into OCTOPATH, and the spread of the eight from brightest to darkest mirrors a continent where “some live in luxury while others struggle.”

The Protagonist Mechanic: Chosen Means Bound#

Beyond understanding the eight stories, one mechanic directly affects how you schedule your playthrough and deserves emphasis:

  • Every new save must first choose a protagonist, who cannot leave the party until their story is complete.
  • The other seven can be met in any order, without affecting when their own stories open.
  • This means the starter choice is not really “which character to level,” but “which story accompanies you the whole way” — thematic preference is a better decision criterion than raw strength.

For more on choosing a starter see the Beginner’s Guide; for pacing through the eight lines see the Walkthrough.

Narrative Structure: How the Stories Interweave#

Beyond the eight main lines, the travelers share two kinds of officially designed crossover storytelling:

Structure Content
Crossed Paths Two-character story vignettes between protagonists
Multi-character side stories Independent short tales unfolding across several travelers

The game also changes how chapters unfold: unlike the first game, each character’s opening chapter proceeds alone (or with a dedicated companion), with later chapters opening to the whole party. This gives each line a more personal narrative opening, and makes the choice of “whose story to advance first” genuinely felt in play.

Coverage Note#

This page covers the identity, homeland and story summary of the eight protagonists, all drawn from official and publicly verifiable sources. The following are not covered — official and verifiable sources have not published them, and this site does not speculate:

  • Each character’s stats, growth curves and exclusive skill lists
  • Chapter-by-chapter level flow and chapter boss combat data
  • Ending details and branch choices for each line
  • Specific trigger locations and rewards for each Crossed Paths episode
