Endings Guide#
Persona 5 Royal’s ending is decided by four branching points plus one prerequisite gate. There are five endings in all: three Bad Endings, one Normal Ending, and one True Ending. Royal’s added extended ending (Royal Ending) is not a standalone sixth ending but a longer cut of the true ending—it appends an extra scene triggered by Goro Akechi’s Confidant at the true ending’s close.
Also distinct from the Bad Endings is “failure and retry”: when a Palace isn’t cleared by its deadline, the game rewinds time one week—no ending screen is produced; you simply re-plan your schedule. Below is an overview first, then the four branching points in chronological order, and finally the complete true-ending checklist and common misconceptions.
Ending Overview#
| Ending | Type | Trigger | Key node |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bad Ending 1 | Bad | Betraying the Phantom Thieves during the November 20 interrogation | Branch point one |
| Bad Ending 2 | Bad | Accepting the god of control’s deal on December 24 | Branch point two |
| Bad Ending 3 | Bad | Accepting Takuto Maruki’s false reality on January 9 | Branch point three |
| Normal Ending | Normal | Third Semester not unlocked; the story wraps at the end of December in the vanilla structure | Prerequisite gate unmet |
| True Ending | True | With the Third Semester unlocked, reject all deals and clear Maruki’s Palace | All four branch points answered correctly |
| Royal Ending | Extended true ending | True ending achieved and Akechi’s Confidant at Rank 8 | Akechi Confidant gate |
The Four Branch Points at a Glance#
| Date | Story node | Wrong path | Correct choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| November 20 | Sae Nijima’s interrogation | Truthfully revealing the Phantom Thieves’ identities | Deny all three questions (the first doesn’t affect the outcome) |
| December 24 | The god of control’s deal | Accepting the deal | Choose “I refuse” |
| January 9 | Maruki’s false reality | Accepting the “ideal world” | Choose “I can’t accept this reality” |
| February 2 | Reaffirming resolve | No independent bad-ending branch | Once more declare your refusal of the false reality |
Branch Point One: November 20, Sae Nijima’s Interrogation#
Scene: The protagonist is interrogated by prosecutor Sae Nijima, who demands the real identities of the other Phantom Thieves. This segment plays as a Q&A with three key questions.
Option breakdown:
- First question: any answer leaves the outcome unchanged—answer by your own preference.
- Second question: take the denial route, i.e. options like “No / never heard of them.”
- Third question: keep denying; choose “There’s no such person.”
Wrong path: reveal every member’s real identity and the game ends immediately, entering the first bad ending (Bad Ending 1).
Mechanics: this branch is decided purely by the interrogation Q&A—no Social Stats or Confidant ranks involved; it is a pure option checkpoint. Manually save before November 20 to avoid an accidental slip.
Branch Point Two: December 24, the God of Control’s Deal#
Scene: on the Christmas Eve story node, the “god of control” offers the protagonist a deal—surrender your original will in exchange for the “ideal world” it promises.
Wrong path: accept the deal and enter the second bad ending (Bad Ending 2).
Correct choice: “I refuse.”
Mechanics: this is a forced story event with no stat or Confidant prerequisites; the only check is this single choice.
Branch Point Three: January 9, Maruki’s False Reality#
Scene: once the Third Semester begins, Takuto Maruki shows the protagonist the “ideal world” he built and asks whether you are willing to stay in this painless reality.
Wrong path: accept Maruki’s “ideal world” and enter the third bad ending (Bad Ending 3).
Correct choice: “I can’t accept this reality.”
Mechanics: this branch exists only on the Third Semester route. Without the Third Semester, the story wraps at the end of December, you never reach this branch, and the true ending is therefore unobtainable.
Branch Point Four: February 2, Reaffirming Resolve#
Scene: Takuto Maruki and Goro Akechi appear, and the protagonist must declare his refusal of the false reality one final time.
Mechanics: this node has no independent bad-ending branch, but it is a mandatory confirmation on the true-ending route—after the declaration, the countdown to Maruki’s Palace formally begins, with the final deadline of February 3.
True Ending Prerequisites#
The complete formula is: unlock the Third Semester + reject all deals + clear Maruki’s Palace before February 3. Item by item:
- Maruki’s Confidant gate (sole and unrecoverable): Takuto Maruki’s (Councillor) Confidant must reach Rank 9 before November 17. The story auto-raises it to Rank 10 (max) on November 18, and the Third Semester begins. Below Rank 9 on November 17, the story wraps at the end of December in the vanilla structure—the Third Semester, the new Palace, and the true ending are all out of reach.
- Reject all deals: don’t betray your teammates during the November 20 interrogation; refuse the god of control on December 24; refuse Takuto Maruki on January 9.
- Clear Maruki’s Palace: the Palace stage is the cognitive science research lab, with a final deadline of February 3; overrunning counts as a failed assault and triggers the time rewind.
- Defeat the final boss: the final boss is Takuto Maruki himself, fighting with the Persona Azathoth, which awakens into Adam Kadmon during the decisive battle.
Advancing Maruki’s (Councillor) Confidant#
- Unlock date: auto-unlocks with the story on May 13; no manual trigger needed.
- Pace: start as early as possible after the unlock; give free slots priority to Takuto Maruki instead of cramming ranks in November.
- Affinity efficiency: meet him while carrying a Persona whose Arcana matches the Councillor for higher affinity gains.
- If missed: past November 17 there is no remedy—only loading an earlier save or leaving it to NG+.
The officially published per-rank rewards follow; the ability names can be checked directly against in-game text:
| Confidant rank | Reward name |
|---|---|
| Ranks 1 to 2 | Detox X |
| Rank 3 | Flow |
| Rank 5 | Mindfulness |
| Ranks 6 to 7 | Flow Boost |
| Ranks 8 to 9 | Detox DX |
| Rank 10 | Wakefulness |
Akechi (Justice) and the Extended Ending#
- Goro Akechi’s Confidant must reach Rank 8 before November 17 to unlock the extra scene at the true ending’s close—the Royal Ending’s appended content.
- Advancement has hard stat gates: Rank 3 needs Knowledge 3 and Charm 3; Rank 7 needs Knowledge 4. Build these stats first when scheduling to avoid wasting a day.
- In Royal, Akechi’s Confidant must be raised normally; in vanilla it ranks up automatically with the story—the mechanics differ, so don’t skip his events based on vanilla experience.
Kasumi Yoshizawa (Faith): An Important Correction#
Kasumi Yoshizawa’s Confidant is not a true-ending requirement—one of the most widespread misconceptions. The actual mechanics:
- Reach Rank 5 before December 22, or her Confidant cannot continue in January.
- The cost of missing it is that her Confidant becomes unraisable for the rest of this playthrough—not that the true ending is lost.
- In priority terms, Maruki’s Rank 9 far outranks Kasumi’s Rank 5: the former decides the Third Semester and true ending; the latter affects only her own Confidant rewards and story completeness.
Game Overs and the Time Rewind#
- Every Palace has a deadline; failing to clear it in time triggers “time rewinds one week”—a failure-and-retry, not an ending.
- Maruki’s Palace’s final deadline is February 3. Overrunning also rewinds; the true-ending route is declared failed and requires reloading an earlier save.
- The difference from Bad Endings: a Bad Ending goes straight to the ending screen; a time rewind keeps the game playable—your schedule just needs re-planning.
Final Battle Essentials#
The final boss is Takuto Maruki, fighting with the Persona Azathoth, which awakens into Adam Kadmon during the battle. The fight runs in phases; below are mechanics-level preparations:
- Save and rest: Royal’s new Safe Rooms let you save and recover anytime—use them fully before pushing into the deepest levels.
- Recovery: ensure the party has stable SP recovery; keep ample margins in both items and skills so a long fight never runs dry.
- Turns: hitting weaknesses or landing criticals triggers 1MORE; Baton Pass hands the action to an ally to extend the offensive.
- Ailments: inflict an ailment on the boss, then strike with the matching element to trigger a Technical for higher damage.
- Showtime: members with deep enough bonds can unleash Showtime—a key burst option in the decisive battle.
- Ailment countermeasures: if the party gets inflicted, cure promptly with items or skills to avoid losing entire turns.
True-Ending Route Key Dates#
| Date | Event | Requirement or consequence |
|---|---|---|
| May 13 | Maruki’s Confidant auto-unlocks | Start advancing early |
| November 17 | Maruki Confidant Rank 9 deadline | The sole Third Semester unlock condition |
| November 17 | Akechi Confidant Rank 8 deadline | Unlocks the extended ending’s extra scene |
| November 18 | Maruki’s Confidant auto-rises to max | Third Semester begins |
| November 20 | Sae Nijima’s interrogation | Branch point one; don’t betray your teammates |
| December 22 | Kasumi Confidant Rank 5 deadline | Decides whether her Confidant continues in January |
| December 24 | The god of control’s deal | Branch point two; choose to refuse |
| January 9 | Maruki’s false reality | Branch point three; choose to refuse |
| February 2 | Reaffirming resolve | Branch point four; Maruki and Goro Akechi appear |
| February 3 | Maruki’s Palace final deadline | Overrun triggers the time rewind; the true ending fails |
Normal Ending vs True Ending#
| Aspect | Normal Ending | True Ending |
|---|---|---|
| Story scope | The story wraps at the end of December | The full Third Semester, running into February–March |
| New Palace | None | Maruki’s Palace (the cognitive science research lab) |
| Goro Akechi | No Third Semester wrap-up | Complete Third Semester arc |
| Kasumi Yoshizawa | Story line incomplete | Complete Confidant and story line |
| Extra scene | None | Extended ending scene appended if Akechi’s condition is met |
| Vanilla counterpart | The original Persona 5’s ending structure (Good Ending) | Royal’s complete exclusive finale |
Post-Game and Trophy Connections#
Clearing the true ending naturally unlocks a batch of trophies tied directly to the ending flow:
- Trophy totals: 53 PlayStation trophies—1 platinum, 1 gold, 7 silver, and 44 bronze; the platinum requires every other trophy.
- Progression hidden trophies: clearing all seven Palaces, clearing Mementos (The Thorough Trickster), and beating the game (The Path Chosen, gold) all unlock naturally through play.
- “I am Thou…”: requires obtaining a Persona through negotiation; fusion-obtained ones don’t count.
- 5 execution trophies: Guillotine, Group Guillotine, Gallows, Electric Chair, and executing during a Fusion Alarm (Accident-Prone).
The seven silver trophies’ requirements follow; several need advance planning for NG+ or long schedules:
| Silver trophy requirement | Related system |
|---|---|
| Top scores on both exams (January 11 and February 11) | Schedule planning |
| Max every Social Stat (Pure Perfection) | Social Stat building |
| Form a romance with a companion | Confidants |
| Raise at least one Confidant to max | Confidants |
| Fully alter Mementos’ cognition | Mementos exploration |
| Obtain a skill accessory from a Palace boss | Palace walkthroughs |
| Defeat the Reaper at Mementos’ deepest level | Superboss challenge |
Notes beyond the trophies:
- Another 52 in-game awards live in Royal’s exclusive Thieves Den facility; they don’t count toward platform trophies and don’t affect the platinum.
- Reference playtime: all trophies take about 100 to 120 hours; all 5 main endings about 90 to 150 hours.
- The Xbox version has no platinum; the equivalent content counts through the achievements system.
- Remaster notes: the HD remaster released October 21, 2022 runs at 60fps, but the PS5 remaster cannot read vanilla PS4 saves to continue play—the platinum and all achievements must be completed from scratch in the remaster.
Common Misconceptions#
| Circulating claim | Actual mechanic |
|---|---|
| Kasumi Rank 5 is a true-ending condition | Rank 5 only decides whether her Confidant continues in January; unrelated to the true ending |
| This game has 5 Bad Endings | There are only 3 Bad Endings; 3 bad + 1 normal + 1 true = 5 endings |
| The Royal Ending is a standalone sixth ending | It’s the true ending’s extended cut; the extra scene is triggered by Akechi’s Confidant |
| Missing a Palace deadline equals a Bad Ending | It’s actually a one-week time rewind; re-plan your schedule and try again |
| Akechi’s Confidant ranks up automatically with the story | In Royal it must be raised normally, and must hit Rank 8 before November 17 |
| Missing Maruki’s Rank 9 can be remedied afterward | There is no remedy—only loading a save or waiting for NG+ |
