Balatro Skills Guide#
This chapter focuses on two things: keeping money compounding and making the deck ever more obedient. Balatro has no separate “skill system” — your management ability is your skill
Economy Management#
The Precise Rules of Interest#
| Rule | Value |
|---|---|
| Settlement timing | End of each round (after beating the Blind) |
| Formula | $1 per $5 held |
| Base cap | $5 ($25 banked) |
| Seed Money voucher | Cap $10 ($50 banked) |
| Payouts | Small Blind $3 / Big Blind $4 / Boss Blind $5 + $1 per unused play |
Common misconception: Interest is not paid at the start of a round — it settles when you clear the Blind; payouts are not a flat $3 either — Blind tiers differ (3/4/5)
Money Strategy by Stage#
| Stage | Target | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Ante 1-3 | $10-25 | Buy Jokers first — once you hold $25, keep it for Interest |
| Ante 4-6 | $25-40 | Hold the Interest line; spend the surplus on your build and vouchers |
| Ante 7-8 | Spend it all | Winning comes first — Interest is pocket change by now |
| Endless | Reroll-heavy | Money only goes toward hunting pieces |
Tarot Control Manual (Official Effects)#
| Tarot | Effect | Usage note |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Increase the rank of up to 2 selected cards by 1 | Lift 2-5s into 10-Ks — densifies the deck |
| Death | Select 2 — the left card becomes a copy of the right (enhancements kept) | Upgrade + copy in one — pair with Strength for deck blood swaps |
| The Hanged Man | Destroy 2 selected cards | The deck-compression core — destroy low cards first |
| The High Priestess | Create up to 2 Planet cards | Free hand levels |
| The Emperor | Create up to 2 Tarot cards | Tarot recursion — mind the chaining order |
| The Hermit | Double your money (max $20) | Use at $20 or more for the maximum gain |
| Temperance | Gain money equal to the total sell value of your current Jokers (max $50) | The fuller your Joker board, the bigger the payout |
| The Chariot | Turn 1 selected card into a Steel Card | Endless-mode feedstock — pairs with Baron |
| Justice | Turn 1 selected card into a Glass Card | ×2 burst — shatters 1 in 4 |
| The Devil | Turn 1 selected card into a Gold Card | Gold Cards earn $3 per round while held in hand |
| Wheel of Fortune | 1 in 4 chance to add a random edition (Foil/Holographic/Polychrome) to a Joker | A miss pops “Nope!” |
| The Fool | Copy the last Tarot or Planet card you used | The start of an infinite copy chain |
Note: no tarot converts a card into a suit of your choice — The Sun/Moon/Star/World each convert to one fixed suit; for true suit merging the Smeared Joker is the tool
Spectral Card Principles#
| Card | Effect | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| The Soul | Create a random Legendary Joker | The only Legendary source in the game — always use on sight |
| Black Hole | Upgrade every poker hand by 1 level | The steadiest early pick in Endless Mode |
| Cryptid | Create 2 copies of 1 selected hand card | Raw material for Flush Five |
| Ectoplasm | Make 1 random Joker Negative (takes no slot), -1 hand size | An extra slot’s worth of power — paid in hand size |
| Immolate | Destroy 5 random cards in hand, gain $20 | Compression with cashback — check for Steel Kings in the blast radius |
General principle: Spectral cards carry heavy costs (destruction / money wipes / hand size) — read the whole line of effect text before use, not just the buff half
Resource Management Doctrine#
| Resource | Principle |
|---|---|
| Money | No rerolls below $10 — Interest first; everything above the Interest cap gets spent |
| Consumable slots | Don’t hoard cards you won’t use — an empty slot beats a dead card |
| Joker slots | Sell transitional Jokers promptly — half-price refund for power is never a loss |
| Deck | Keep 30-45 cards — check for a compression opportunity every time you enter the shop |
| Rerolls | $5 to start, +$1 each — at $8 a pop, think twice |
Seed Entry Walkthrough#
| Step | Action | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Main menu → Start run | Seeds are entered on the deck select screen |
| 2 | Click the seed input box | Empty by default = random seed |
| 3 | Type the seed string | Only uppercase letters and numbers are accepted |
| 4 | Pick deck and Stake | Stakes don’t change the random sequence’s content |
| 5 | Enter the run | Shop, packs, and Boss order are all fixed |
| 6 | Game-over screen | The seed shows on the results screen — copy and share |
A Management Rhythm Example (Flush Build)#
- Ante 1-2: Finish buying your opening Jokers; use The Hanged Man to destroy low cards outside the target suit
- Ante 3-4: Level Flush with Planet cards; always buy Four Fingers / Smeared-style Jokers on sight
- Ante 5-6: Use tarots in bulk to convert cards into high cards of the target suit — compress the deck under 35 cards
- Ante 7-8: Swap +Mult for ×Mult — the Flush base is already tall enough
- After the win: Pivot to Steel cards and copy engines for the Endless push
The Ten-Second Round Checklist#
Run through this table before entering the shop — most management gaps hide in these small decisions:
| Check | Target state |
|---|---|
| Savings | Above $25 ($50 after Seed Money) or fully spent — never stuck in the middle |
| Consumable slots | No Tarots/Planets your build can’t use |
| Deck size | 30-45 cards — compress first if over |
| Joker slots | No expired transitional Jokers squatting in slots |
| Next Boss | Seen and prepared for |
| Main hand level | Planet cards prioritized after Jokers, before rerolls |
