Stakes Guide#

Stakes Guide

Stakes are Balatro’s difficulty system — 8 tiers (White → Gold), and each tier stacks one new modifier on top of the previous one. High Stakes aren’t “bigger numbers” but “worse rules”: a true hell-tier roguelike challenge

Core Stake Mechanics#

Mechanic Details
Stacking by tier Each Stake includes all modifiers from lower tiers — Gold Stake carries 7 layers at once
Independent per Deck Stake progress is tracked per Deck — clearing Red Stake on the Red Deck doesn’t mean the Blue Deck has unlocked it
Sticker records After clearing a Stake with a Deck, that Deck and the Jokers you used earn a Sticker of the matching color
Challenge restriction Challenge-mode Decks can only be played at White Stake

Official 8-Tier Stake Table#

Tier Name Official modifier First-clear unlock
1 White Base difficulty, no modifier —
2 Red The Small Blind no longer gives money Zodiac Deck
3 Green Required score scales faster with each Ante Painted Deck
4 Black “Eternal” Jokers can appear in the shop (cannot be sold or destroyed) Anaglyph Deck
5 Blue -1 discard per round Plasma Deck
6 Purple Required score scales faster with each Ante (stacks with Green) —
7 Orange “Perishable” Jokers can appear in the shop (expire after 5 rounds) Erratic Deck
8 Gold “Rental” Jokers can appear in the shop (cheap to buy, but $3 every round) —

Unlock order: tiers unlock White → Red → Green → Black → Blue → Purple → Orange → Gold, and you must clear them consecutively with the same Deck — to unlock Blue Stake for the Checkered Deck, you first have to clear White, Red, Green and Black Stake with Checkered

The Three Shop Sticker Mechanics in Detail#

The core variable at high Stakes is that shop Jokers may carry a “Sticker” — the hardest part to predict

Eternal Sticker (from Black Stake)#

A Joker with the Eternal Sticker can be neither sold nor destroyed — buy one and it occupies a slot forever. Think hard before buying: will this transitional Joker become dead weight later? Starting at Black Stake, the habit of “buying whatever” has to go

Perishable Sticker (from Orange Stake)#

A Joker with the Perishable Sticker expires after 5 rounds (like buying a timed buff) — acceptable as a throwaway early pick, but disastrous if a core Joker you depend on expires. Plan your build assuming every Perishable Joker has only 5 rounds of life

Rental Sticker (from Gold Stake)#

A Joker with the Rental Sticker is cheap to buy (about $1) but costs $3 in rent every round — surprisingly efficient for a short burst, an economic black hole if held long term. At Gold Stake, you have to rework your economy on a “daily rent” model

High-Stake Strategies#

Faster Score Scaling (Green + Purple stacking)#

With two “scales faster” modifiers stacked, the score requirement curve for mid-to-late Antes gets very steep — your build must be online before Ante 6; starting the hunt for core Jokers late is almost always too late. Prioritize leveling the hand types you play most (Planet cards); when base chips fall short, even the fanciest multipliers can’t save you

-1 Discard (from Blue Stake)#

Discards are your source of hand stability — one fewer discard means bigger swings in hand quality. Countermeasures: thin your deck (The Fool / Death Tarots), pick low-entropy Decks like Checkered, and buy hand-size Vouchers such as Paint Brush early

Joker Slot Management (Eternal + Perishable + Rental triple squeeze)#

At Gold Stake, ask three questions before every Joker purchase: can I sell it (Eternal: no), how long will it live (Perishable: 5 rounds), how much rent (Rental: $3 per round) — the idea of a “transitional Joker” nearly disappears at high Stakes; every slot has to be judged on its endgame value

No Money from the Small Blind (from Red Stake)#

With Small Blind rewards gone, your income is only Big Blind, Boss Blind, interest and Tags — economy Jokers like Golden Joker rise sharply in value. Skipping a Blind for a Tag also needs more care, because every dollar of income is more precious

Clear Reward Route#

Stake cleared Global unlock
Red Zodiac Deck
Green Painted Deck
Black Anaglyph Deck
Blue Plasma Deck
Orange Erratic Deck

Purple and Gold Stakes don’t unlock new Decks directly — but the Gold Stake deck skin and the all-Stakes completion Achievement are waiting at the finish line

FAQ#

Question Answer
Are Stakes shared across the account? No — Stake progress is per Deck; all 15 Decks each have their own 8-tier progress line
What is the Purple Stake modifier? Score requirement growth accelerates further (same type of modifier, stacking with Green Stake)
Can Eternal Jokers be destroyed? No — Eternal = cannot be sold + cannot be destroyed; think it through before buying
Are Rental Jokers worth buying? Worth it for a short decisive push — rent accumulates every round, holding long term always loses; swap it out once you’ve used it
How many times do you have to beat Gold Stake? Once per Deck — 15 runs if you want Gold Stickers on every Deck
Which Decks are recommended at high Stakes? Checkered (Flush consistency) and Black (+1 Joker slot to offset Sticker risk) are common community picks

Summary#

Key point One-line advice
Core mindset High Stakes change the rules, not the numbers — re-examine every decision
Unlock route Take one Deck all the way down, White → Gold in a single line
Three Joker questions Can I sell it, how long will it live, how much rent
Economic focus With no Small Blind money, interest and economy Jokers are your lifeline
Build deadline Under Green + Purple double acceleration, being online before Ante 6 is a hard requirement

Every Stake tier above White changes the rules rather than the numbers — Gold Stake carries seven modifiers at once, so the buying habits that work at White Stake have to be rebuilt from scratch

The most common mistake at high Stakes is buying Jokers on reflex: Eternal, Perishable and Rental each rewrite what a shop purchase actually costs you
