Balatro Bosses Guide#
Boss Blinds are the final hurdle of every Ante — each one comes with a unique restriction designed to break your favorite poker hands or Jokers. There are 28 Boss Blinds in total: 23 standard bosses (rotating through Antes 1-7) plus 5 Showdown bosses reserved for the Ante 8/16/24 milestones.
Basic Mechanics#
| Mechanic | Details |
|---|---|
| Position | The 3rd Blind of every Ante (Small Blind → Big Blind → Boss Blind) |
| Score requirement | Standard Bosses need 2x the base; exceptions: The Wall 4x, The Violet Vessel 6x, The Needle 1x |
| Cannot be skipped | Boss Blinds cannot be skipped for a Tag — you have to fight them |
| No repeats | You will never face the same Boss twice in a single run |
| Showdown | The Ante 8/16/24/32 bosses are picked from the 5 Showdown Blinds |
| Reroll options | Director’s Cut/Retcon vouchers can reroll it; Jokers like Matador and Chicot can counter the effect directly |

Counter Strategy Quick Reference#
Suit Lockers (The Club / The Goad / The Window / The Head)#
Each of the four suit bosses kills one suit — a glance at your deck’s main suit tells you the risk up front. The Checkered Deck (Spades + Hearts) hurts most when The Head or The Goad shows up; the universal fix is keeping a backup hand type that doesn’t rely on suits, or packing wild-card style deck tweaks that let any hand be played.
Face Card Killers (The Plant / The Mark / The House)#
The Plant outright disables all Face cards — Face card builds are effectively playing barehanded against it; The Mark and The House are information pressure (face-down cards), so counter with reveal effects or simply count by suit and play it out blind.
Play Restrictions (The Needle / The Psychic / The Mouth / The Eye)#
The Needle gives just 1 hand but only requires 1x score — unload your single strongest hand and you’re done; The Psychic forces 5 cards, which is lethal for High Card builds; The Mouth locks you to 1 hand type, so single-hand-type builds naturally don’t care; The Eye bans repeated hand types — having a second hand ready is the only answer.
Hand Pressure (The Hook / The Manacle / The Water / The Wheel)#
The Hook steals 2 cards per played hand, The Manacle shrinks hand size, The Water zeroes discards — the shared fix is slimming your deck to raise draw quality: the smaller the deck, the less theft and shrinkage hurt.
Economy Killers (The Ox / The Tooth)#
The Ox wipes your money when you play your most used hand — switching to a second hand type for this Ante sidesteps it entirely; The Tooth charges per card played — finish in one hand whenever you can, since it’s a pure deck-efficiency exam.
Pure Stat Walls (The Wall / The Violet Vessel / The Flint)#
The Wall at 4x and The Violet Vessel at 6x are pure score checks — level up your hand type (Planet cards) and stack enough Mult before the Boss Blind; The Flint cuts base Chips and Mult in half — builds that lean on Joker bonuses instead of base hand values barely feel it.
Joker Targets (The Crimson Heart / The Amber Acorn / The Verdant Leaf / The Cerulean Bell)#
The Crimson Heart disables one Joker per hand — never funnel all your scoring through a single Joker; The Verdant Leaf demands a Joker sale to lift the debuff — keeping a transitional Joker as “ransom” is a good habit; The Amber Acorn shuffles Joker order — brutal for Jokers that depend on left/right triggers (Blueprint, for example); The Cerulean Bell forces one card to stay selected — five-card hands are barely affected.
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can Boss Blinds be skipped? | No — they are the mandatory exam of every Ante; only vouchers/Jokers can reroll or neutralize them |
| Which Boss is most dangerous? | The Violet Vessel (6x score) and the four suit bosses that hit your main suit — both punish your build at the deck level |
| How to prepare in advance? | Once you see the next Ante’s Boss, shop for a backup hand type, economy, or reroll vouchers accordingly |
| “Debuffed” vs “disabled”? | Debuffed cards don’t score and their effects are void; disabled applies to Jokers — their triggered effects stop but they still occupy a slot |
| How does the Matador Joker work? | At Boss Blinds it turns the boss’s own effect into a payout for you — unconventional, but a strong tactical piece |
| Do Showdowns pull from the standard pool? | No — the final boss of Ante 8 is always picked from the 5 Showdown Blinds |
Summary#
| Key point | One-line advice |
|---|---|
| Core principle | Bosses punish “one-trick builds” — keeping a fallback keeps you alive |
| Suit bosses | When your main suit is locked out, pivot to a second hand type without hesitation |
| Score walls | Level up hand types early and buy Mult on the spot |
| Economy bosses | The Ox means switch hand types, The Tooth means save your plays — both are one-round fixes |
| Showdown | Always keep one sellable transitional Joker as ransom |
