Where Winds Meet Beginner’s Guide#

Where Winds Meet is a free-to-play open-world wuxia action-adventure RPG whose global version launched on PC and PlayStation 5 on November 14, 2025. Before you start, get three things straight: it is not a soulslike — the game offers multiple difficulty settings; it has no fixed classes — you don’t pick one at character creation; and its solo and online modes can be switched at any time. This page walks through the opening flow using verified facts only, and clearly marks whatever we couldn’t verify.

Before You Start: Confirm Your Platform#

Platform Launch Notes

PlayStation 5 November 14, 2025 Timed console exclusive at launch (at least 6 months)

Xbox Series X|S / Xbox on PC / Xbox Cloud June 8, 2026 Day-one Xbox Game Pass release

Official PC requirements, per the Steam store page:

Tier Specs
Minimum Windows 10/11 64-bit, Intel i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 2400G, 8 GB RAM, GTX 750Ti / RX 550 / Arc A380, DirectX 11, 100 GB storage (SSD recommended)

Note: the global Steam build blocks mainland China IP addresses; the CN and global servers don’t share data and run different content schedules. Decide which server you’re playing before registering and downloading.

Character Creation: Faces and Identities#

Free Character Customization#

The game supports free character customization (confirmed by Wikipedia and other sources), letting you adjust facial and appearance details. Specific parameters — the number of face combinations, hairstyle counts, and the like — have not been published by the developer or any verifiable source, so we won’t speculate. The in-game customization screen is the final word once you’re in.

No Classes, Only Identities#

There is no class lock at the start. Identities listed in official materials include:

Identity Gameplay Focus
Doctor Healing and practicing medicine across the jianghu
Merchant Trading and commerce gameplay
Assassin Stealth assassination gameplay
Bounty Hunter Bounty hunting and capture gameplay

Beyond identities there is the “hundred trades” system: players can practice many occupations in the jianghu, and identities plus trades together form your social role in this world. Specific stat bonuses and unlock conditions per identity haven’t been detailed by the developer — we won’t invent them. Follow the in-game guidance once you start.

Identities can be pursued in parallel as you play; there is no “wrong pick that ruins your save.” Don’t agonize at the start — try whichever direction interests you.

Choose Your Mode: Lone Wanderer or Shared Journey#

The solo and online experiences are two modes you can switch between at any time:

Mode Traits
Lone Wanderer Single-player, focused on story and exploration
Shared Journey Online mode: co-op (up to 4 players), guilds, guild wars, and multiplayer dungeons

Both modes are switchable at will — no permanent choice at the start. Players who want to sink into the 150-plus hours of narrative can stay in Lone Wanderer and switch to Shared Journey for team raid content. The Xbox store page lists the shared world’s online scale as 2–300 players.

Basic Controls#

The game supports keyboard-and-mouse and controller, both with remappable keys. As for a default keybinding table: no verifiable official source has published one, and we won’t fabricate a fake table — the settings menu and the in-game tutorial will show you the actual binds.

For combat, three things matter from the start:

  • Weapons determine martial arts: each weapon type carries its own combat styles. At launch there are 7 weapon types and 12 martial arts styles — start with one of sword, fan, spear, rope dart, twin blades, zhanmadao, umbrella, or fist guards and practice it.
  • Mystic Arts are your second kit: there are 40+ Mystic Arts; official examples include Tai Chi, Toad Stance, and Lion’s Roar. They serve both combat and puzzle-solving — when an exploration point stumps you, think about your Mystic Arts.
  • Watch out for qi deviation: certain actions can throw your character into a qi deviation state, shown as abnormal behavior. You can wait it out, ask other players for help, or seek treatment from the NPC “Doctor Zhang” (see the Combat System page).

Difficulty Choice#

The game officially offers multiple difficulty settings, and its marketing explicitly promises newcomer friendliness. The official names of each tier are not verifiably documented — if you see specific difficulty names floating around, they’re made up. Advice: if unsure, start low. The joy of a wuxia game is exploration and story; there’s no shame in an easy ride, and you can always raise the difficulty later.

The suggestions below rest on verified systems only, with no invented numbers:

  1. Finish the tutorial and locate the three systems: weapons, martial arts, and Mystic Arts.
  2. Pick one weapon type to master, upgrading its martial arts styles with style insights as you go.
  3. Switch Mystic Arts when exploration puzzles stall you — officially, Mystic Arts cover both combat and exploration puzzle-solving.
  4. Prioritize the launch regions like Qinghe and Kaifeng; the Imperial Palace area of Kaifeng opened on February 6, 2026.
  5. Don’t neglect inner methods (xinfu): upgrading and breaking through them costs insights — this is your long-term growth line.
  6. Watch the weekly purchase limits: the battle-pass-free shop restocks weekly limited items; the Resources page covers resource planning in depth.
  7. Don’t rush the main story: the game encourages free exploration, and 150+ hours of narrative are best digested slowly.

Newcomer FAQ#

Q: Which weapon should I pick first? Nothing locks in permanently — weapons can be swapped and combined. Start with something intuitive like the Sword or Spear, then graduate to specialties like the umbrella or rope dart.

Q: Do I need to spend money? No. The game is free to play with an official no-Pay-to-Win promise: all gameplay content is free, and spending is limited to cosmetics (outfit gacha and passes included).

Q: Can I play on mobile? Does it share progress with PC? Yes and yes. The global mobile version hit iOS / Android on December 12, 2025; cross-platform play and cross-platform progression are officially confirmed.

Q: My character has qi deviation — now what? Wait for it to fade, ask other players, or find the NPC “Doctor Zhang” for treatment. Details on the Combat System page.

What We Don’t Cover#

The following have not surfaced in official or verifiable public sources, so we make no claims: exact default keybindings, the number of face customization combinations, per-identity stat bonuses, the level cap, and a step-by-step opening quest walkthrough. Treat the game itself and future official announcements as authoritative.
