The Binding of Isaac: Repentance Beginner’s Guide#

The Binding of Isaac is huge and packed with items — but the core mechanics are intuitive. This chapter helps you nail the basics, survive your first floor, and work your way up to tougher and tougher bosses.

Core Controls#

Control Keys Notes
Move Arrow keys Four-directional movement
Shoot Arrow keys Isaac fires tears — you can shoot while moving
Bomb E Blows open secret rooms, rocks, and enemy clusters. Your core exploration tool
Active item Space Uses your current active item (it has limited charges)
Card/Pill Q Uses your currently held card or pill
Map Hold Tab View the current floor’s map
Drop item Hold Ctrl Drops your currently held item on the ground

Core Resources#

Resource Notes
Red Hearts Your health — taking hits drains red hearts. Once they hit zero you enter a spectral “Lost” form (semi-transparent, and the next hit kills)
Soul Hearts The blue hearts — always depleted first. They can’t be restored with red heart pickups, and they stop your Devil Room chance from dropping
Black Hearts Black hearts — when depleted they detonate with poison damage, clearing nearby enemies
Coins Buy things in Shops. Also affect the power of “Greed”-type items
Bombs Blast open secret rooms, rocks, shop donation machines, and special obstacles
Keys Open Treasure Rooms (gold key), Shops (silver key), and certain doors
Batteries Recharge your active item — half, full, and super battery pickups

Room Types at a Glance#

Room Icon Notes
Normal Room None Clear enemies for rewards (coins/bombs/keys)
Boss Room Skull One per floor — beat the boss to unlock the stairs to the next floor
Treasure Room Golden chest Grab one item for free — your strongest item source
Shop Money bag Buy items with coins — the stock is often good
Library Bookshelf Grab a book-type active item for free
Curse Room Red Entering costs blood (usually 1 red heart) — but the rewards are excellent
Angel Room White door Chance to spawn after the boss — free, powerful items
Devil Room Red door Chance to spawn after the boss — trade health for powerful items
Secret Room None (crack in the wall) Bomb it open — usually holds items or money
Challenge Room Red glow Clear waves under restrictions — great rewards but risky

Game Progression#

A run of Isaac spans 6-12 floors (depending on the routes you take).

Floor Name
F1 Basement
F2 Caves
F3 Depths — Mom, the first real challenge, with highly varied attack patterns
F4 Womb
F5 (optional) Sheol
F5 (optional) Cathedral
F6+ Chest / Dark Room

Survival Rules for New Players#

# Rule Notes
1 Survival beats build-crafting A dead build is no build at all — prioritize health and move speed first. Damage comes later
2 Your first pick sets the tone The first Treasure Room item defines your early game — whatever you get, build around it
3 Clear the floor before the boss Explore each floor’s Treasure Room and Shop before the Boss Room — walking in with a fresh item makes the fight far safer
4 Bomb for the Secret Room every floor Secret Rooms usually sit near the Treasure Room, Boss Room, or Shop — bomb the walls to find them. Plenty of great items hide there
5 Note down good items 700+ items is far too many to memorize — beginners should keep an item database open in a browser tab
6 Mom’s Heart isn’t that hard Your first milestone is reaching Mom’s Heart (the Floor 4 boss). After a few hours of practice you’ll get there consistently. The key is keeping your health healthy
7 Untouched = Devil Room Clear a floor without losing red hearts (soul/black heart hits don’t count) and the boss will spawn a Devil Room with high probability. Devil Rooms trade health for powerful items
8 Don’t hoard red hearts Soul Hearts are consumed first — but if you keep topping up with red hearts, your Devil Room odds on the next floor drop. Manage your red heart containers
  1. Beat Mom’s Heart 10 times with Isaac → unlocks ??? (Blue Baby)
  2. Complete a full run with Magdalene → unlocks Dark Judas
  3. Complete a Devil Deal route with Cain → unlocks Samson
  4. Speed-clear the game with Azazel → unlocks Lilith

Choosing Your Character#

Character Traits Difficulty Why pick them
Isaac Starting item “the D6” — reroll an item once ⭐⭐ Medium The most well-rounded — the D6 lets you reroll items — the first pick for beginners
Magdalene Starts with 4 red hearts (one extra) plus a healing effect ⭐ Easy Big health pool — plenty of room for mistakes — ideal when you’re just starting
Cain Fast move speed + high luck out of the gate — but limited to a single active item ⭐⭐ Medium Speed = easier dodging, high luck = more good drops
Judas High starting damage (3.5x) + better Devil Room odds — but fragile (1 red heart) ⭐⭐⭐ Hard For veterans — the Devil Deal route is extremely strong but high risk
Azazel Starts with flight + Brimstone (a huge laser) + high damage — but short range ⭐ Easy The best character for new players to unlock — flight means crossing hazards untouched, and Brimstone deletes bosses
Lilith Starts with “Box of Friends” (duplicates familiars) + a passive that doubles drops ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hard Devastating late game, but the early run demands familiarity with item synergies

Common Deaths and How to Avoid Them#

Cause of death Fix
Swarmed by small enemies early on Never stand still — back off when you enter a room to read where the enemies are, then take them out one by one
Out of health after Devil Deals Don’t take a Devil Deal unless you’re sitting at 3+ red hearts. Soul hearts don’t count toward the cost
Boss bullet patterns too dense to dodge Stay close to the boss — most patterns are actually sparser point-blank than at range
The Curse Room is too costly It costs 1 red heart — go in if you’re loaded with soul hearts (they drain first). If you only have red hearts and less than 3, stay out
The Treasure Room gives you a dud Reroll it with the D6 (Isaac’s ability) — or leave it unopened and pick from a Devil/Angel Room after the boss instead

Key Items Cheat Sheet#

Item Color Effect Verdict
Tech X Blue aura An orbiting laser ring — high damage + huge area ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the strongest in the game
Brimstone Red laser Charge up, release a screen-crossing beam — shreds packs of enemies ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A classic powerhouse
Holy Tears White tears Tears grow huge — high damage + piercing ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong piercing power
Mom’s Knife Thrown knife A throwable knife — high damage, piercing, and reusable ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Your boss-killing core
Godhead Aured tears Homing + explosive tears — plus a +0.3 damage aura ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The best aura in the game
Tech Laser beam A continuous laser — no more tears ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great, but gets stale
9 Lives - +9 health but cat form — losing any blood kills you ⭐⭐⭐ A lifesaver
Magic Mushroom - All stats up + you grow bigger ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The perfect start
Setting Recommendation Why
Fullscreen/Windowed Windowed or fullscreen — personal preference No meaningful impact — pick whichever feels comfortable
Game speed Default (normal) Don’t speed it up as a beginner — your hands aren’t trained yet
Filters (CRT/pixel) Turn the CRT filter off — the pixel filter looks cleaner The CRT filter blurs the image and hurts your bullet reading
Screen shake Turn it off Shaking during boss-room explosions throws off your positioning
Music and SFX On — the soundtrack is excellent Isaac’s OST is fantastic, especially the boss fights
