Trinkets Guide#
Trinkets are small passive items in The Binding of Isaac — they fill the character’s trinket slot and provide everything from stat boosts to rule changes. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance has 188 trinkets in total — far more than older versions — and a good number of them can noticeably change how a run plays out.
This system has a few key points that are easy to overlook: you can carry only 1 trinket by default; trinket effects can be absorbed permanently; Mom’s Box doubles most trinket effects; and any trinket has a 2% chance to spawn as a golden version — with roughly 3x the effect of the normal version. This article is compiled and verified against the game’s official Wiki — first the system, then sources and probabilities, and finally verified effects of representative trinkets.
Core Mechanics: Single Slot, Dual Trinkets, Absorption, and Golden Trinkets#
| Mechanic | Description |
|---|---|
| Single slot | Characters have only 1 trinket slot by default — picking up a new trinket replaces the old one |
| Dual trinkets | The items Mom’s Purse and Belly Button let a character hold 2 trinkets at once |
| Absorption | The item Smelter, the pill effect Gulp!, and Marbles can all permanently fuse the current trinket’s effect into the character — once absorbed, the trinket slot opens up and you can keep picking up new trinkets |
| Doubled effects | The item Mom’s Box doubles the effect of most trinkets — the number one target of trinket-focused builds |
| Golden trinkets | Any trinket has a 2% chance to spawn as a Golden Trinket — with roughly 3x the effect of the normal version |
| Spawn order | Within a single run — the order in which trinkets appear is fixed by the seed — each trinket usually appears only once — miss it and you may never see it again this run |
Golden trinkets cannot be farmed on demand — where one appears is completely random — and a 2% spawn chance means meeting one in a run already counts as lucky. When you do find one, carrying it almost always beats the normal version of the same trinket.
Where Trinkets Actually Come From#
| Source | Description |
|---|---|
| Room-clear drops | Trinkets can appear in the drop batch after clearing a room |
| Chests | Regular Chests, Golden Chests, and Locked Chests can all contain trinkets — exact odds in the next section |
| Fortune Telling Machine | The Fortune Telling Machine may spit out a trinket when you pay for a fortune |
| Super Secret Room | A Super Secret Room may hold a trinket directly |
| The item “The Box” | Routes related to the item The Box can also produce trinkets — details defer to in-game behavior |
| Blowing up Slot Machines | Destroying a Slot Machine may drop a trinket |
| D20 rerolls | Reroll a room’s drops with the D20 item — trinkets can appear among the results |
| Beggar death | A Beggar leaves a trinket behind on death |
| The Bum Friend familiar | With Bum Friend around, there is a chance he brings trinkets |
| Defeating Mom | Beating Mom has a chance to drop a trinket |
| Defeating Ultra Pride | Beating the boss Ultra Pride has a chance to drop The Left Hand |
| Golden Poop | Destroying Golden Poop can drop Counterfeit Penny — this source is exclusive to Counterfeit Penny |
These sources cover all 188 trinkets. The Left Hand and Counterfeit Penny are tied to exclusive sources — to collect them you have to hunt Ultra Pride and Golden Poop on purpose. The remaining trinkets follow the “seed-fixed order, each usually once” rule — instead of grinding one source over and over, weigh every trinket you come across carefully.
What Chests Can Contain: Wiki-Verified Odds#
Chests are one of the main trinket sources — the official Wiki’s Chests page gives the real content odds:
| Chest type | Content | Odds |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Chest | Drop batch | 78% |
| Regular Chest | Trinket | 10% |
| Regular Chest | Pill | 10% |
| Regular Chest | Another chest | 1% |
| Golden Chest | Drops | 58% |
| Golden Chest | Item | 20% |
| Golden Chest | Trinket | 10% |
| Golden Chest | Cards and runes | 10% |
Neither table adds up to 100% — the remainder belongs to rarer outcomes. Only one fact matters: whether regular or golden chest — the odds of a trinket are 10%.
Quite a few guides online quote numbers like “golden chest 40% trinkets, red chest 25%, key chest 15%, wooden chest 5%” — that whole set of odds has no source — the real values are in the table above. Our Cards Guide stresses the same principle: there is no universal fixed drop-rate table in this game — exact odds shift with conditions.
Notable Trinkets with Verified Effects#
The effects and values below are all wiki-verified — safe to use as a take-it-or-leave-it reference:
| Trinket | Effect |
|---|---|
| Callus | Immunity to damage from spikes and goo — our Sacrifice and Spikes page also notes: while carrying it, sacrifices in the Sacrifice Room are disabled entirely |
| Cancer | Tear delay -2 — about +1.0 fire rate — the most direct fire-rate boost among trinkets |
| Goat Hoof | Speed +0.15 — a plain, dependable mobility boost |
| Curved Horn | Damage +2 — a very tangible early-game gain |
| Cursed Skull | Taking damage at low health teleports you to the last cleared room — it can save your life but also wrecks your route |
| Broken Ankh | A 22.22% chance on death to revive as “???” — essentially a chance at an extra life |
| Ace of Spades | +10% chance of cards from room-clear drops — +66% chance of cards from chests — the core trinket of card builds |
| Child’s Heart | Raises the odds of red heart drops (about +10%/+66% — the boost differs by source — defer to in-game) |
| Safety Cap | Raises the drop odds of pills |
| Lucky Toe | A 33% chance for room-clear drops to include one extra pickup |
| Penny trinkets | A group including Bloodied Penny, Flat Penny, and Counterfeit Penny — picking up a coin has a 50% chance to drop the matching resource (red hearts, bombs, keys, extra coins, etc. — exact pairing defers to in-game) |
| Empty Capsule | Spawns 1 unknown pill per floor — the pill’s effect is decided by the run’s pill pool — good or bad varies — details in the Pills Guide |
Three Widely Circulated Myths#
“A rainbow trinket that switches effects every 30 seconds” — no such trinket exists in the game. The closest real trinket by name is Rainbow Worm — the completion reward of Challenge 28 — a Worm-type trinket — with nothing to do with “switching on a timer”. When you see guides like “plan your route around the rainbow trinket”, close the tab.
“The Empty Capsule’s pill is 100% random — half good, half bad” — the real Empty Capsule mechanic is 1 unknown pill per floor — the effect depends on the run’s pill pool — good or bad varies — but there is no fixed “half good, half bad” rule. For the pill system as a whole, see the Pills Guide.
Chest odds tables like “golden chest 40% trinkets” — the real numbers are in the table above: both regular and golden chests have a 10% trinket chance — the “40%/25%/15%/5%” set has no source.
Usage and Collection Tips#
- Decide on the spot: trinkets appear in seed-fixed order — each usually gets one chance — do not hesitate when high-value trinkets (like Cancer or Curved Horn) show up.
- Prioritize Mom’s Box: the doubling covers most trinkets — once you have it — the run’s trinket value jumps a whole tier.
- Absorb or dual-wield: Smelter and Gulp! make the effect permanent and free the slot — Mom’s Purse and Belly Button keep the flexibility to swap anytime — choose by this run’s build.
- Watch for the 2% golden trinket: any trinket spawn point can roll a golden version — roughly 3x the normal effect — pick it up first.
- Don’t miss exclusive sources: for Counterfeit Penny watch for Golden Poop — The Left Hand comes from beating the boss Ultra Pride.
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How many trinkets can you carry in one run? | 1 by default — after getting Mom’s Purse or Belly Button you can hold 2 at once |
| What if I don’t want a trinket occupying the slot? | Use the Smelter, the Gulp! pill effect, or Marbles to permanently absorb the effect — the trinket slot opens up right away |
| How do you farm golden trinkets? | You cannot farm them on demand — any trinket spawn location has a 2% chance of a golden version — pick it up when it shows |
| Why have I never seen a certain trinket again this run? | Trinket order is fixed by the seed — each usually appears only once — miss it and you wait for the next run |
| Which penny trinket is the most useful? | Counterfeit Penny can only come from Golden Poop — rare but its extra-coin payoff is steady — Bloodied Penny fits builds short on red hearts better |
The trinket system is often underestimated — most of the 188 look unremarkable one by one — but combined with Mom’s Box, absorption, and golden trinkets — a run can stack up a surprisingly large hidden payoff. Next time you start a run — treat the trinket slot as a standing loadout slot just as important as your active item.
