Cards and Runes Complete Collection#
Cards are the consumables in The Binding of Isaac that test your planning the most: the same card’s effect is constant every run, and when and on which floor you activate it directly shapes the run’s resource curve and boss fight pressure. Based on authoritative data for the current version, this page compiles the confirmed effects, real acquisition routes, and practical uses of the Major Arcana, suit cards, reversed cards, and the rune system — and clears up several of the most widespread misconceptions along the way.
Card Slot Basic Rules#
Understand how the pocket slot works before looking at specific cards — it prevents the vast majority of misuse:
| Rule | Description |
|---|---|
| Shared slot | Cards and pills share the same pocket slot, used with Q, and only 1 can be held at a time |
| Fixed effects | The same card’s effect is identical every run — read the design and use it with confidence |
| Difference from pills | The color-to-effect mapping of pills is reshuffled randomly every run; cards carry no such randomness |
| Major Arcana scale | The Major Arcana number 22, numbered from 0 (The Fool) to XXI (The World) |
The fact that card effects are fixed is the cornerstone of the whole system: you can confidently save a card for a specific occasion without worrying “will this run’s effect be different”. Only pills change run to run — which is the core reason veteran players favor card builds: plans can be made for the long game.
Major Arcana Effect Table#
The Major Arcana are the classic Tarot Cards, 22 in total. All effects below are confirmed data for the current version:
| Number | Card | Effect | Usage Advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | The Fool | Teleports back to the starting room of the current floor | Use when you want to re-plan the floor’s route or revisit areas near the start |
| I | The Magician | Tears become homing shots for the current room | Activate immediately upon entering the boss room — hit pressure drops massively |
| II | The High Priestess | Mom’s leg stomps the highest-HP enemy on the field for 300 damage; using it in an empty room stomps you | Against bosses with 300 HP or less it’s an instant kill — pop it when you see the boss |
| III | The Empress | Triggers the Whore of Babylon effect in the current room: +1.5 damage, +0.3 speed | Pop it the moment you enter the boss room — double gain to damage and positioning |
| IV | The Emperor | Teleports directly into the boss room | A speedrun tool — jump straight into the boss fight when you don’t want to clear the floor |
| V | The Hierophant | Drops 2 full Soul Hearts | Soul Hearts don’t occupy red heart containers — extremely valuable for survivability |
| VI | The Lovers | Drops 2 full red hearts | A stable healing source when short on red heart containers |
| VII | The Chariot | 6 seconds of invulnerability that damages contacted enemies, but you cannot fire tears during it | Push through overly dense barrages, or body-slam weakened enemies at point-blank |
| VIII | Justice | Drops 1 set each of random hearts, keys, bombs, and coins | Restocks all four resource types at once — top priority when short |
| IX | The Hermit | Teleports to the Shop | Confirm you have enough coins before using the card |
| X | Wheel of Fortune | Spawns a Slot Machine or Fortune Telling Machine | The gambler’s joy card — returns can be substantial with plenty of coins |
| XI | Strength | Triggers the full stat boost of Magic Mushroom in the current room, but without healing | Pop it in the boss room — a free round of all-stat buffs |
| XII | The Hanged Man | Grants flight for the current room | Fly over rocks and chasms, bypassing ground threats |
| XIII | Death | Deals 40 damage to every enemy in the room | Sweeps packs of mobs in the early-to-mid game, cleans up stragglers |
| XIV | Temperance | Spawns a Blood Donation Machine; in Greed Mode it spawns a Demon Beggar instead | Trade health for coins when healthy — don’t get greedy at low HP |
| XV | The Devil | +2 damage in the current room | A pure damage card — pop it straight into boss fights; note it triggers no Devil Room deals |
| XVI | The Tower | Randomly drops 6 troll bombs | Fine for blowing walls, rocks, or adding damage — just dodge the landing spots |
| XVII | The Star | Teleports to the Treasure Room; if a Planetarium exists on the floor, teleports there instead | A targeted teleport for when you want Planetarium-exclusive items |
| XVIII | The Moon | Teleports to the Secret Room and opens a wall along the way | Reach the Secret Room without spending a single bomb |
| XIX | The Sun | Fully heals, deals 100 damage to every enemy in the room, and reveals the whole map | Healing, clear, and map reveal in one — at low HP it’s a spare life |
| XX | Judgement | Spawns a Beggar or Demon Beggar, with a 2% chance of a special beggar | A steady source of feed-for-reward returns |
| XXI | The World | Reveals the whole map (excluding Super Secret Rooms) | Shop and Treasure Room locations at a glance — the route planner’s best friend |
A few usage details of high-value cards deserve special emphasis:
- The High Priestess’s Mom’s leg targets the highest-HP enemy first, but using it in an empty room stomps you — pop it in the boss room when you see the boss, don’t waste it early;
- The Chariot’s invulnerability blocks you from firing tears — treat it as a survival and repositioning skill, don’t expect damage from it;
- The Moon opens a wall on the way to the Secret Room — a free wall break, saving those bombs for what’s inside;
- The World reveals the map but excludes Super Secret Rooms — finding one still requires bomb-testing walls.
Suit Cards and Special Cards#
Beyond the Major Arcana, the card pool has a large family of poker suit cards. The number-2 series is the classic resource doubler, and the other suit cards each have their own effects:
| Card | Effect |
|---|---|
| Joker | Teleports to the Devil Room or Angel Room |
| 2 of Clubs (2♣) | Doubles your bomb count when used |
| 2 of Diamonds (2♦) | Doubles your coin count when used |
| 2 of Hearts (2♥) | Doubles your red heart count when used |
| 2 of Spades (2♠) | Doubles your key count when used |
| Other Q/K/A suit cards | Each has an independent effect; defer to the game itself |
The logic of the number-2 series is straightforward: the bigger the resource base, the more the doubling pays. Use the 2 of Diamonds after saving up coins, and the 2 of Hearts when your red heart count is high. The Joker’s value lies in initiative — no more passively waiting for the Devil Room or Angel Room door to appear; enter whenever you want, the core card of Devil-deal builds.
Reversed Major Arcana#
The Major Arcana also have a full set of reversed versions, with a question mark in the card name, such as The Fool?. How to unlock: defeat the Greed Mode endgame boss Ultra Greedier with the corresponding Tainted Characters to unlock that character’s reversed card.
Reversed cards share numbering with their upright versions but have completely different effects — upright cards serve normal runs, while reversed cards often target more extreme build ideas. One number, two uses; collecting both sets is an important part of the card achievement line. Each reversed card’s specific effect defers to the game itself; after unlocking, try each once on the early floors before working it into your route.
Runes and Soul Stones#
The card slot also holds an independent system: Runes. The current version has 7+ runes, with Halophel as the flagship; Soul Stones belong to the same system. Both runes and Soul Stones are unlocked via Challenges — only after completing the corresponding challenge do they enter the drop pool.
A few practical tips:
- Runes share the pocket slot with cards and pills; hoarding them unused just leaves the Q slot idle — a consumable’s value is realized the moment it’s used;
- Before completing the corresponding challenge, the relevant runes won’t appear in your runs;
- Each rune’s specific effect defers to the game itself; try it once after unlocking before deciding whether it’s worth a permanent slot.
How Cards Are Actually Acquired#
| Route | Description |
|---|---|
| Room clears | A chance to drop cards after clearing combat rooms |
| Chests | Both normal chests and gold chests can contain cards |
| Beggar rewards | Feeding a beggar coins may return a card |
| Slot and fortune machines | Gambling machines have a chance to spit out cards |
| Shop | Cards sell for 5 pennies, dropping to 3 pennies with discount effects |
| Trinket bonus | The Ace of Spades trinket increases card drop chances — worth grabbing on sight |
Special emphasis: the drop chances of all routes above fluctuate with the character’s Luck stat — the game has no fixed percentage table like “enemies 5%, chests 10%, Secret Rooms 50%”. Any claim citing such precise drop rate numbers is untrustworthy; defer to the game itself. The Ace of Spades trinket is one of the few confirmed ways to raise card drops — grab it first if you see it at the start.
Card Usage Strategy#
Choosing when to use cards by scenario matters more than hoarding them:
| Scenario | Recommended Cards | Idea |
|---|---|---|
| Boss fight buffs | The Magician, The Empress, The Devil | Pop the in-room buffs on entry: homing shots, +1.5 damage, +2 damage are all free damage |
| Boss execution | The High Priestess | 300 damage is an instant kill against bosses with 300 HP or less — stomp the moment the fight opens |
| Survival | The Chariot, The Sun | The Chariot’s 6 seconds of invulnerability pushes through barrages; The Sun fully heals at low HP plus 100 damage room-wide |
| Resource resupply | The Hierophant, The Lovers, Justice | The Hierophant adds 2 Soul Hearts for survivability, The Lovers adds 2 red hearts, Justice brings 1 set of all four resources |
| Exploration and mapping | The Moon, The World, The Star | The Moon goes straight to the Secret Room, The World reveals the map, The Star locates the Treasure Room and Planetarium |
| Speedrun skips | The Emperor, The Hermit, The Fool | The Emperor jumps into the boss room, The Hermit heads to the Shop, The Fool returns to the start to re-plan |
| Gambling economy | Wheel of Fortune, Judgement, 2 of Diamonds | Wheel of Fortune spawns a slot or fortune machine, Judgement spawns a beggar, the 2 of Diamonds doubles coins for another round |
| Devil builds | Joker | Actively teleport into the Devil Room or Angel Room and keep route initiative in your own hands |
Clearing Up Common Misconceptions#
Finally, corrections of several widespread claims that completely contradict the game’s mechanics:
| Misconception | Truth |
|---|---|
| The Devil card triggers Devil deals, trading 1 red heart for an item | The Devil card (XV)’s effect is only +2 damage in the current room — it neither opens the Devil Room nor involves any heart trade; real Devil deals are purchases made with red heart containers at item pedestals in the Devil Room |
| Cards can be combined, like “white + blue” or “blue + yellow” | Cards cannot be combined. The pocket slot holds only 1 at a time, and pressing Q simply uses the current card — no card combination recipes exist in the game |
| Card drop rates follow a fixed percentage table | Drop chances fluctuate with the luck stat; there is no official fixed numbers table, and claims precise to single digits are all fabricated |
| Card effects are random every run, like pills | Card effects are constant; only pills’ color-to-effect mapping is reshuffled each run |
