The game is modest in scope and easy on hardware, and it has received several large free updates (the latest major version, 1.6, shipped on 2024-03-19). One purchase covers a complete, continuously updated package—there are no paid DLC gates on top.

Controls and Interface#

Stardew Valley supports both keyboard/mouse and controller in single player and co-op. Default key bindings can be viewed and changed at any time in the in-game settings menu; layouts differ slightly between platforms, so rather than listing every key here, go by what the game displays.

Early on, only four types of inputs really matter: moving, using your currently held tool or item, interacting with objects (talking, picking up, opening doors), and opening the menu to check your inventory and quests. Everything else builds on these four, and the game’s opening tutorial walks you through them one by one.

Your First Decision: Which Farm to Pick#

The first choice when creating a save is the farm map, and the game currently offers 8 of them:

Farm map Notes
Standard Farm The classic default option
Riverland Farm —
Forest Farm —
Hilltop Farm —
Wilderness Farm —
Four Corners Farm —
Beach Farm Added in the 1.5 update
Meadowlands Farm Added in the 1.6 update

For terrain differences, tillable area, and the unique mechanics of each layout, rely on the descriptions in the in-game selection screen and the community wiki—this page won’t break them all down. For new players, simply start with the default Standard Farm; the other layouts mostly shape your mid- and late-game layout style rather than early-game difficulty.

The Pace of the Opening Days#

Day 1 to the First Week#

Your core task at the start is to turn an overgrown farm into something that can actually produce: clear debris to free up planting space, buy in-season seeds at Pierre’s General Store, keep watering, and explore outward step by step as your energy allows. What and how much to plant depends on the season and your funds; for crop figures, go by the prices and descriptions at the in-game seed shop.

Unlocking Fishing#

Early in the game (after Spring 2), a beach event triggers: the fisherman Willy gives you a fishing rod, and fishing is unlocked. The exact trigger date follows the in-game event—but this gift means that from the first week on, fishing is a major source of income and food alongside farming.

Mining and Exploration#

The Mines north of the farm are the main source of equipment materials and mineral resources. Early delving should focus on getting a feel for combat and collecting basic ores; don’t rush floor progression. Deeper areas and high-risk content are covered on the Monsters and Combat Challenges page.

Socializing and Gift-Giving#

Villager friendship is one of the game’s core systems: each giftable villager accepts 2 gifts per week, plus 1 extra on their birthday. A loved gift gives +80 base friendship, and on a birthday that is multiplied by 8, for +640. Building the habit of watching for birthdays is the most cost-effective social strategy of the early game.

Choosing Between Two Paths#

Path Traits Achievement impact
Community Center Complete bundles in exchange for facility rewards; for example, completing the Fish Tank bundle and removing the Glittering Boulder earns you the Copper Pan Tied to the “Local Legend” community achievements
Joja route A development direction centered on paying for services Tied to the “Joja Co. Member Of The Year” achievement and mutually exclusive with “Local Legend” on the same save

The two paths are mutually exclusive on the same save. To earn all achievements, you’ll need two saves, one per route; if you only plan to play through once, the Community Center route offers richer gameplay. New players shouldn’t rush the decision—push your basic operation forward first, then pick according to preference.

Long-Term Goals at a Glance#

Goal Numbers Notes
Complete the Museum 95 items (42 artifacts + 53 minerals) 60 donations earn the Rusty Key and open the Sewers; all 95 earn a Stardrop
Stardrops 7 Collecting every one raises your energy cap to 508
Legendary Fish 5 Angler, Crimsonfish, Glacierfish, Legend, Mutant Carp
Steam achievements 49 Includes the hidden achievements Legend and Fector’s Challenge
100% Perfection Perfection The ultimate endgame summit; completing the Museum is a requirement

Common Beginner Mistakes#

  • Missing birthdays: the ×8 friendship multiplier on a birthday gift is the best gifting value in the game; weekly gift slots are limited, so save them for birthdays.
  • Ignoring fishing: after Willy hands you a rod, fishing is a steady income source from week one—don’t stare only at your fields in the early days.
  • Rushing the route choice: Community Center and Joja are mutually exclusive and irreversible; learn the differences between the two before deciding.
  • Neglecting the Museum: donation rewards (Rusty Key, Stardrop) unlock new areas and your energy cap; catching up late in the game puts you at a disadvantage.
  • Trusting outdated info: guides circulating online may be based on old versions or fabricated data; when cross-checking figures, always prefer what the game itself displays.

FAQ#

# Question Answer
1 Picked the wrong farm? The farm map is fixed at save creation and cannot be changed; beginners should simply pick the Standard Farm. The differences between the other maps are covered on Farming and Crafting
2 When does fishing unlock? Willy gives you a rod in a beach event after Spring 2; the exact trigger date follows the game
3 How should I set Year 1 goals? Aim to “learn the loop”: fill your fields with seasonal crops, fish consistently, delve into the Mines gradually, start gifting—income targets vary by playstyle, so no single number is set here
4 Community Center or Joja? They are mutually exclusive; the Community Center route has richer content, the Joja route is more straightforward. See above for the achievement impact of both paths
5 Fastest way to raise friendship? A loved gift on a birthday (+80 × 8 = +640) is the most efficient; each person accepts 2 gifts per week plus 1 more on their birthday
6 Do I need to buy DLC? There is no paid DLC; major updates like 1.6 are all free content
7 How does multiplayer work? The PC version supports up to 8 players at once, with online, LAN, and split-screen play—see the Co-op Guide
