Secrets#
“Secrets” is probably the category of Persona 5 Royal guides most easily polluted by secondhand information: circulating “hidden content megaposts” often dress player experience up as official design, even inventing numbers and probabilities that don’t exist in the game. This page follows the site-wide standard—covering only mechanics verifiable in-game or disclosed by Atlus, explicitly marking anything official never explained as “unpublished,” and preferring gaps over guesses.
First, sort the three kinds of “hidden”#
| Category | Test | This page’s treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Officially documented mechanics | Appear in the trophy list, in-game tutorials, or official statements | Conditions and mechanics stated directly |
| Exists but lacks official detail | Encounterable in-game; probability and values unpublished | Mechanics direction only—no numbers |
| Pure rumor | No first-hand source | Never included |
Put simply: any claim citing exact probabilities, exact floor counts, or exact drop rates without an official source should not guide your play. This page lists the official record item by item for comparison.
The game’s most important hidden fact: the true ending’s hard deadlines#
If you memorize one “hidden item,” make it this: the sole condition for unlocking the third semester is Takuto Maruki’s (Councillor Arcana) Confidant reaching Rank 9 before Nov 17. The Nov 18 story scene auto-promotes him to max, opening the third semester; miss this line and the story wraps at the end of December in the original game’s structure—no third semester, no new Palace, no true ending, with no way to recover this playthrough. Maruki’s Confidant unlocks automatically on May 13, and each rank’s ability is officially disclosed: Ranks 1 and 2 unlock Mental Detox, Rank 3 unlocks Mood Adjustment, Rank 5 unlocks Mindfulness Therapy, Ranks 6 and 7 unlock Fast-Acting Flow, Ranks 8 and 9 unlock Mental Detox DX, and max rank unlocks Clarity Therapy.
Two related lines share the same day and must be scheduled together—see the table:
| Character | Deadline condition | Relation to the true ending |
|---|---|---|
| Takuto Maruki (Councillor) | Confidant Rank 9 before Nov 17 | The sole unlock condition for the third semester; without it, no true ending |
| Goro Akechi (Justice) | Confidant Rank 8 before Nov 17 | Unlocks an extra scene on the true-ending route; Rank 3 requires Knowledge and Charm at 3 each, Rank 7 requires Knowledge 4 |
| Kasumi Yoshizawa (Faith) | Confidant Rank 5 before Dec 22 | Not a true-ending condition; failure only locks her Confidant for this playthrough |
The ending-side choice dates are equally “miss and it closes” hidden facts: selling out your friends during Sae Niijima’s interrogation on Nov 20, accepting the “God of Control” deal on Dec 24, or accepting Maruki’s false reality on Jan 9 each lead directly into one of the three bad endings; after reaffirming your resolve on Feb 2, Maruki’s Palace final deadline is Feb 3—missing it counts as mission failure and rewinds time one week, forfeiting the true ending. Full branch logic on the Endings page; daily scheduling on Schedule Management.
The Reaper of Mementos#
The Reaper is the deep-layer menace of Mementos and one of the hidden targets explicitly registered in the trophy list: defeating it corresponds to a silver trophy, which is why it belongs on this page.
On spawn conditions, officials said exactly one thing: the Reaper’s appearance relates to Mementos’ Despair and Taint level. Floors, probability, and patrol routes are all unpublished; community “camp on floor X” lore is secondhand and not endorsed here. The only confirmable observations are two, at the “existence and feel” level: the music clearly shifts as the Reaper nears, and on encounter it is a far higher-threat target than contemporary regular Shadows—engaging an underleveled party almost certainly means a wipe and a reload.
| Item | Mechanic |
|---|---|
| Positioning | A high-threat elite inside Mementos; defeating it corresponds to a silver trophy |
| Spawn mechanic | Official wording: related to Mementos’ Despair and Taint level; floors and probability unpublished |
| Warning signs | Distinct music and sound-effect changes as it approaches |
| How to fight | Requires a full buff-debuff cycle, ample Personas, and recovery stock; its stats and weaknesses were never published |
| Playthrough role | Optional content—no bearing on the story or true ending, but a required target on the full-achievement route |
Concluding advice: handle it late in the playthrough. A full-achievement run runs about 100 to 120 hours, and the Reaper is its signature late-route gatepost; see Personas for building toward it.
Deviations and side Palaces: Royal’s added random encounters#
Royal added two kinds of random content to Mementos, both “real in-game, official name only—no probability” hidden mechanics:
| Mechanic | Official statement | Not published |
|---|---|---|
| Deviation | Random anomalous encounters in Mementos; completing one earns a silver trophy, officially named The Deviated Cognition | Trigger probability and condition details |
| Deviant Palaces | Randomly generated short Palaces containing rare gear | Spawn probability, gear drop rate |
For a full-achievement run, Deviations are must-watch—their silver trophy has no alternate route. Deviant Palaces double as gear and resource farming, and their randomized structure means every Mementos dive deserves a detour to check. Mementos passageways generate randomly by design, and officials never published a total floor count, so any “how many floors total” chart is void—see the Mementos page.
Treasure Demons and rare drops#
The game includes rare Shadows of distinctive appearance (officially Treasure Demons, colloquially treasure demons), and Royal added one more (officially Pataphysical). Their mechanical role is Persona-building material: once captured via negotiation or defeat, they serve mainly as Velvet Room fusion stock—the key resource when raising high-rarity Personas.
The boundary to draw: their exact drop rates, spawn rates, and capture-condition details were never published. So this page states only the mechanics—“they exist, they’re fusion material, prioritize them on sight”—and offers no numeric spawn-rate table.
Executions and item rewards#
Battles hide an easily missed reward: some Shadows leave item drops when finished off with an execution. This mechanic is consensus between officials and encyclopedias—its existence is confirmed—but specific item drop rates again have no official figure; any “farm N times and it’s guaranteed” claim is player statistics, not official design.
When you need a specific item reliably, negotiating to demand it is the more controllable official mechanism: push an enemy into panic and choose to demand items, receiving goods without a fight. Using both routes is the normal rhythm of item collecting; full negotiation and execution mechanics on the Combat page.
Easter eggs and flavor details#
Easter eggs are covered at the “existence and feel” level, with no unlock numbers:
- Kichijoji is the Royal-added city area: darts raise Baton Pass rank and billiards raises Technical rank—mechanic gains explicitly listed in official promotion; the area also holds a jazz club and a temple, atmosphere content with no effect on progress.
- The Thieves Den is the Royal-added collection facility, home to 52 in-game achievements. It is not a platform trophy and doesn’t affect Platinum, but as a showcase and collection venue it is officially designed hidden content.
- Morgana’s navigation banter changes with location and time; some lines appear only in specific scenes—atmosphere detail that neither can nor needs exhaustively listing.
- Tokyo’s districts and subway stations are scattered with nods to earlier series entries—observational flavor; the city-exploration routes are on Areas.
Repeating this page’s boundary: claims like “a hidden gesture unlocks something” or “players supposedly found a scene” lack first-hand sources and are never included. The right way to enjoy Easter eggs is to see them in the game yourself, not to check off rumor lists.
Hidden trophy targets quick reference#
Every target below is verifiable in the official trophy list—the “officially documented” category; the complete list and routes on Achievements.
| Hidden target | Official condition | Tier |
|---|---|---|
| True ending route | Maruki’s Confidant Rank 9 before Nov 17, refuse all deals, clear Maruki’s Palace | Must-Do (for the true ending and third semester) |
| Akechi’s extra scene | Akechi’s Confidant Rank 8 before Nov 17 | Recommended (a supplement to the true-ending experience) |
| Advancing Kasumi’s Confidant | Rank 5 before Dec 22 | Optional (doesn’t affect the true ending) |
| Defeating the Reaper | Defeat the Reaper of Mementos | Must-Do (no alternate route on a full-achievement run) |
| Deviation silver trophy | Complete a Deviation encounter in Mementos | Must-Do (no alternate route on a full-achievement run) |
| Fully altering Mementos cognition | Advance Jose’s Stamp Rally to complete cognition alteration | Must-Do (no alternate route on a full-achievement run) |
| All five social stats maxed | Knowledge, Guts, Proficiency, Charm, and Kindness all maxed | Recommended (the foundation for exam and Confidant gates) |
| Top score on both exams | Top score on both the Jan 11 and Feb 11 exams | Recommended (same track as stat building) |
| Becoming lovers | Form a romantic relationship with a character | Optional (any one counts; no quantity required) |
| Maxed Confidant | Bring at least one Confidant to max rank | Recommended (naturally overlaps with daily scheduling) |
| Skill accessories | Obtain skill accessories from Palace rulers | Recommended (comes naturally with the story) |
| Five execution methods | Use the Guillotine, Group Guillotine, Gallows, Electric Chair, and executions during a Fusion Alarm | Recommended (routine Persona-building steps) |
On the tiers: “Must-Do” marks mechanical nodes that cannot be bypassed on an official route (true ending or full achievements); “Recommended” marks targets tightly coupled with other systems, doable in passing; “Optional” marks purely player-taste experiences. All tiers map to official mechanics—they are not scores: Atlus has never published any star or strength rating system, and any “worth three stars” table has no official basis.
What Atlus never published (myth-busting list)#
Finally, a consolidated list of what officials never said. This list is itself the page’s most valuable hidden knowledge: any claim in the left column below is unverified secondhand lore, however credible its source.
| Common claim | Official position |
|---|---|
| “Mementos has N floors” | Passageways generate randomly; total floor count never published |
| “The Reaper is on floor X, spawns at Y%” | Only stated as related to Mementos’ Despair and Taint level |
| “Each Palace has N chests” | Never published |
| “Full-achievement completion percentage” | The game provides no such statistic |
| “Exact Mementos drop rates” | Never published |
| Star ratings for weapon or character strength | Atlus has never published any rating system, nor does this site |
| “Best weapon” / “best character” claims | No official ranking exists—only differing conditions; weapon choices on the Items & Equipment page |
Separating “sourced” from “unsourced” is this page’s core method: what the official trophy list and in-game tutorials can verify, this page states; where officials stay silent, this page prefers blanks to invented numbers. That is what a responsible secrets guide for a 100-hour game looks like.
