Equipment & Items#

Equipment & Items

This page organizes the item and equipment system of Persona 5 Royal by official categories: recovery supplies, infiltration tools, skill cards, material crafting, and more — covering how each category is acquired and where it fits, then closing with resource management across the pace of Palace infiltrations. Exact numbers shift as you progress; the decision framework does not.

The Resource Structure of the Item System#

The game’s combat resources run along two tracks — hit points (HP) and skill points (SP) — and the item system is built around them:

  • HP is spent on taking damage, normal attacks, and some Physical skills. It has many recovery methods at a low unit price, with ample supply channels inside and outside Palaces, so it rarely becomes a real bottleneck.
  • SP is the universal fuel for Persona skills; elemental attacks and the vast majority of support and healing skills consume it. With few recovery channels and a high unit price, it is the resource that demands the most careful budgeting across the entire game, and the main target of item management.
Resource Scarcity Supply strategy
HP Many recovery channels, low cost Leave it to everyday facilities and cheap supplies; don’t deliberately save skills in combat just to protect it
SP Few channels, high unit cost, especially tight early and mid-game Combine items, execution, and daily facilities; in combat, prioritize loops that don’t consume it to spread out expenses

From this comes the page’s master rule: the point of items is to substitute your backpack’s stock for character actions and scarce resources. Trash fights burn cheap resources — solve them with skills; the backpack truly comes into play in boss fights and against enemies with no exploitable weakness. Judging whether each item use is worth it always comes down to the same question — is this fight spending cheap resources or scarce ones?

Equipment Slots and Trade-Off Criteria#

Each member’s equipment splits into four slots, each with its own role and its own trade-off logic:

Slot Role Trade-off criteria
Melee weapon Base output for regular attacks and All-Out Attacks Check attack power and accuracy first, then bonus effects; ailment-inflicting weapons only gain extra value against enemies with no exploitable weakness
Ranged weapon Independent Gun-type output Gun and Physical are two separate resistance checks, making it a ready-made alternative against physically resistant enemies — don’t leave it idle for long
Armor Damage reduction and elemental resistances Defense is a universal benefit, resistances are targeted ones; before a boss fight, check the enemy’s elemental makeup before deciding whether to swap in resist gear
Accessory Functional specialization Resource-loop accessories (healing and SP efficiency) come before raw-stat boosts; save survival accessories for the member who absorbs the most damage

Two additions: first, weapon bonus effects should complement your team’s tactics — an ailment-inflicting weapon pays off far more for a Technical-focused team than an ordinary weapon with similar stats. Second, armor resistances are situational gear: wear high-defense regular armor day to day, and temporarily swap in resistance pieces before boss fights based on the enemy’s attack elements. For individual weapon growth paths and sources, see the Weapons page.

Recovery Items: The HP and SP Supply Lines#

Recovery items are the most frequently used consumables. Handle them in three cases by purpose:

  • HP recovery: Every tier is available, from single-target to full party, from small tops to full restores. Shops stock them, and Palace chests and battle drops replenish them too. Cover routine shortfalls with real-world facilities, and only use in-battle HP recovery in emergencies.
  • SP recovery: Expensive and hard to obtain — the hard currency of consumables. On the daily side, coffee brewed from coffee beans at your home cafe is the mainstay, reliably converting into SP supplies you can carry into Palaces; on the combat side, save it for boss fights and crucial turns, and never squander it on trash fights.
  • Status cures: Medicines that lift Forget, Fear, and other ailments. Their value concentrates in boss fights — a suppressed member loses their action every turn, so prioritize the main attacker and healer, and let other characters’ ailments wait until after the battle.

The official store also offers downloadable content such as the “Recovery Item Set” for ready-made supply kits. Whether to use it is up to you: it skips the early money-saving and hoarding phase, and correspondingly lowers the pressure of resource management.

Infiltration Tools: Keys to Palace Exploration#

Infiltration tools are crafted at the hideout’s workbench from collected materials; official categories cover the grappling hook (Grappling Hook), tether, detector, lockpicks, and battle-escape tools. The Royal-exclusive grappling hook latches onto high mechanisms inside Palaces to open shortcuts and new routes, making it a staple of exploration route planning. Exact recipes and carry limits follow the workbench’s unlock progress in game; this page does not list numbers.

Two main usage criteria:

  • Locked chests deep in Palaces usually hold better gear and supplies, so take stock of your lockpicks before entering deeper areas; when materials run tight, restock this item first.
  • Escape tools are the floor of your exploration margin for error — keep them stocked at all times to withdraw from bad encounters without losing the day’s progress.

Before every push into a Palace, the pre-run checklist is fixed at three items: are recovery supplies topped up, are there enough lockpicks for the deepest chests, and is resistance gear against the boss’s attack elements equipped? Confirm all three before spending a day slot, and you will noticeably cut mid-run retreats.

Throwables and Combat Consumables#

Combat consumables split into attack, defense, and recovery by effect, judged by the same master rule: is this fight spending cheap resources or scarce ones?

Category Typical use When spending is worth it
Attack Damage to single or all targets, inflict ailments When a boss fight needs extra damage turns, or a no-weakness enemy has sealed the weakness route, use ailment items to set up a Technical opener
Defense Raise defense or grant resistances Use before a boss’s opening burst turns, pairing with armor resistances to keep damage taken below the warning line
Recovery Restore HP or SP in battle, cure ailments Use when a key member is down or suppressed and the team’s skills cannot cover it — never in trash fights

Technical attacks are the amplifier of this framework: hitting an ailment-afflicted enemy with a specific element deals bonus damage and knocks it down instantly. That is exactly the value of ailment-inflicting items — they occupy nobody’s skill slots; anyone carrying them can trigger the effect. For combat loop details, see Combat System.

Ingredients and Curry: The Hidden Lever of Schedule Efficiency#

The main use of ingredient items is not combat but schedule management. Ingredients can be bought at shops and cooked into curry in your home kitchen; give curry to people you meet on the street to restore one already-spent action slot, plus a small amount of experience.

The mechanism’s value is turning “no more actions today” into “one more thing I can do”:

  • On days when the calendar is packed but you are one facility visit or one outing short, a curry is a free extra slot.
  • Cooking curry costs money and ingredients — renewable resources — and buys back schedule, the least renewable resource of all. That trade pays off in almost every situation.
  • So don’t buy ingredients only on demand; stock up whenever shops carry them so the kitchen always has inventory, and curry can cover a schedule gap the moment it appears.

The exact benefits from different ingredients and cooking results are not published in any official table; actual effects follow the in-game prompts, and this page makes no numeric guesses.

Skill Cards: Moving Skills Freely#

Skill Cards transfer a skill from one Persona to another, a major source of Persona-building freedom:

  • The Velvet Room offers a function that turns a Persona’s skill into a card; making a card consumes the Persona itself, so it suits transitional Personas on your fusion route.
  • A finished card can be used by any Persona eligible for that skill; banking a key skill as a card on a transitional Persona and finally moving it onto the finished one is a common building technique.
  • There is also an official “Skill Card Set” DLC that provides ready-made cards, skipping the card-making fusion step. For overall Persona planning, see the Personas page.

Materials and Workbench Crafting#

Workbench crafting is the main sink for materials, which come through three channels:

Channel Traits Usage advice
Palace and Mementos exploration Sparkle points and chests are the main sources, with more types as you progress Collect in passing on every infiltration; don’t backtrack just to farm materials
Story rewards Key milestones unlock new tool recipes and crafting permissions Check required materials the moment a new recipe unlocks, and stock up before the next infiltration
Shops and facilities Some supply-type materials are directly purchasable Buy small gaps directly; rely on exploration for large ones

The material pool is shared across all tools, so set priorities before crafting: lockpicks feed deep-chest rewards, the grappling hook feeds route shortcuts, escape tools feed your margin for error. Invest according to the current Palace’s layout; for chest and collectible distribution patterns, see the Collectibles page.

DLC and Bonus Equipment#

Beyond the Recovery Item Set and Skill Card Set mentioned above, the official store also sells “Battle Support Bundles” containing powerful gear. Trade-offs when using bonus content:

  • Bonus gear generally outclasses same-period shop goods; using it early and mid-game sharply compresses the grind, ideal for players who want a smooth experience.
  • Players who want the original balance can save it for the third semester and the final battle, where high-powered enemies put those reserves to good use.
  • Either way, bonus content never affects trophy or achievement requirements — no compatibility concerns.

Selling Old Clothes and the Cash Loop#

As you progress, some old outfits and costume items lose their use; the game provides a sell-old-clothes (Furugi no Neuchi) mechanic to turn idle clothing into cash, and an in-game achievement themed “Trash Into Treasure” corresponds to it — so wardrobe cleanup and saving money converge into one loop.

Recommended investment order for cash within the item system: weapons for your main attacker, accessories for healing and support slots, armor updates for the whole team, and only then stockpiling ingredients and consumables. Weapons set each fight’s baseline efficiency, accessories stabilize the resource loop, and armor’s marginal gains come last — its situational resistances are on-demand needs; patch them when a clear weakness appears.

Retreat and Supply Cadence#

Palace infiltrations are bound to the calendar system: once a Calling Card is sent, the theft must be completed within the deadline, so item management is essentially time management. One thing must be clear first: the top priority of schedule management is always the true ending’s unlock condition — Takuto Maruki’s Confidant rank must reach 9 before November 17. Miss that hard deadline and the third semester and true ending close off entirely; no amount of items or money can make up for it. For a full breakdown of ending branches, see the Endings Guide page.

With that floor secured, supply cadence follows three principles:

  • The Safe Room is a Palace save-and-regroup point for locking in progress before going deep, but it restores no resources — never treat it as a supply station.
  • Leaving a Palace is not failure: explored maps and collection progress persist on re-entry. When status and stock run dry, retreat decisively — it saves more days than exhausting supplies deep inside and starting over.
  • The mainstay of resource recovery sits on the real-world side: coffee, baths, the clinic, and other facilities handle daily resupply. Scheduling rest days between two infiltrations is the basic rhythm for staying combat-ready.

Common Management Mistakes#

  • Hoarding scarce supplies until the credits: items never expire, and leaving them unused is the real waste — boss fights are exactly what they are meant to be spent on.
  • Distributing armor and accessories evenly across the team: gear should concentrate on damage-takers and the main attacker; even spreads get key members knocked out first in boss fights.
  • Swapping weapons by attack stat alone: accuracy and bonus effects often outweigh raw panel numbers in practice — check the area’s enemy makeup before switching gear.
  • Pushing deep with too few lockpicks: a missed locked chest means another full trip, effectively burning an extra calendar day.
  • Forcing weaknesses against no-weakness enemies: once you confirm there is no weakness, switch immediately to ailment-plus-Technical; repeating ineffective damage only wastes SP.
  • Buying ingredients only when needed: the curry-slot mechanic assumes kitchen stock; last-minute purchases rarely cover a schedule gap.

How Items Tie Into Other Systems#

  • The Baton Pass and All-Out Attack loops decide which fights deserve items; mechanics in Combat System.
  • Execution-based gear output depends on your Persona stock and growth routes; planning in Personas.
  • Several trophies and achievements tie directly into item mechanics, such as the Trash Into Treasure achievement tied to selling old clothes; list in Achievements & Trophies.
  • Pairing real-world recovery facilities with infiltration days is schedule planning; arrange it together with Schedule Management and the Walkthrough.

Item management was never about saving every supply — it is about entering and leaving every Palace infiltration at full strength. Under the Calling Card’s deadline pressure, a stable supply cadence comes closer to guaranteeing completion than any single piece of god-tier gear.
