Curses and Challenges#
In The Binding of Isaac, a Curse is a random negative effect attached to a floor - the screen suddenly darkening, the minimap vanishing, or your health being hidden may all be a curse at work. The two things players most often get wrong about this system are how likely curses actually are to appear and how many types exist. This page sets both straight for the current version (including the Repentance DLC), and collects the ways to remove curses and how to respond to them. For the full rules and rewards of Challenge mode see Challenges; this page only covers challenge content directly tied to curses.
Curse odds: determined by save file progress#
The odds of a curse appearing are not a fixed value - they keep rising as your save file progresses. The check is based on progress recorded at the save level, not on what you do in the current run. The milestones and values are as follows:
| Save progress | Normal | Hard |
|---|---|---|
| New save file | 1/80 | 1/10 |
| After defeating Mom 5 times | 1/30 | 1/5 |
| After unlocking the “Everything is Terrible” achievement | 1/10 | 1/3 |
| After defeating Isaac | 1/5 | 1/2 |
Three conclusions that directly affect how the game feels:
- Hard mode curse odds are higher than normal at every milestone - the gap on a new save is 8x (1/80 vs 1/10), so the impression that “curses are everywhere” usually comes from hard mode.
- Defeating Isaac is the watershed: normal mode reaches 1/5 and hard mode a full 1/2 - on hard, on average every other floor is cursed.
- Odds are rolled per floor independently - one clean floor does not make the next one safe; and several cursed floors in a row is perfectly normal.
The six common curses#
Six common curses appear in normal play - once a floor is flagged as cursed, which one shows up is drawn at equal probability (1/6 each):
| Curse | English name | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Blind | Blind | Items on pedestals show as question marks - you cannot tell what they are until picked up |
| Darkness | Darkness | Visibility drops sharply - you can only see a small circle around your character |
| Lost | Lost | The floor minimap disappears - navigation relies on exploration and memory |
| Maze | Maze | Walking through a door can send you to the “wrong room” - you are teleported to another room on the floor |
| Unknown | Unknown | Health display is hidden - you cannot see how many hearts you have left |
| Labyrinth | Labyrinth | The first floors of a chapter merge into one XL floor - it contains 2 Boss rooms and 2 Treasure rooms |
Two of these cause the most confusion and deserve a closer look:
- Labyrinth - it does not change combat rules, it changes floor structure outright: two floors that would be separate become one large floor, with both Boss rooms and both Treasure rooms on it. Resources double but so does the run; treat the two Boss rooms as the dividing points between half-floors while exploring.
- Unknown - with health hidden, even the change from picking up a red heart is invisible; your only cues for remaining health are the hurt sound and your character’s state, so act on the most conservative estimate.
The special curse: Curse of the Cursed#
Beyond the six above, the game has one special curse, the Cursed curse. It never appears naturally in normal play - only two scenarios can produce it: Challenge 10 “Cursed!”, which applies it for the entire run, and entering a game with the “CVRS ED” seed. The game data also contains a Giant Curse concept - but it was never implemented and cannot be encountered in normal play; community stories of “Giant Curse encounters” should all be treated as myths.
Removing curses and becoming immune#
| Method | Category | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Black Candle | Item | Permanently grants curse immunity once picked up |
| Dagaz | Rune | Removes the current floor’s curse when used |
| The Sun (upright) | Card | Removes the current floor’s Darkness curse when used |
| Night Light | Item | Provides light - reduces the impact of Darkness |
The usage priority is clear: Black Candle is the once-and-for-all answer - once you have it, no save progress level matters anymore. Until it arrives, Dagaz is the most versatile stopgap - it clears any curse; The Sun only has targeted value against Darkness; Night Light is a transitional fix when visibility is limited.
Pills and reversed cards can also trigger curses#
Curses do not only come from floor rolls - certain consumables directly trigger the matching curse when used:
| Consumable | Curse triggered |
|---|---|
| “Amnesia” pill | Lost |
| “???” pill | Maze |
| Reversed Sun card | Darkness |
Factor this risk into pill testing and card play: save curse-triggering pills for floors where the cost is low, since getting lost or warped stacks the penalty onto that floor. For identifying and using pills see Pills; for cards and runes see Cards and Runes.
Handling each of the six curses#
| Curse | How to respond |
|---|---|
| Blind | When unsure, do not take - remember the pedestal’s location and come back once you are confident or genuinely need it |
| Darkness | Fix visibility first (Night Light, or The Sun upright to remove it) - hug walls and keep reaction distance for head-on fights |
| Lost | Push systematically in one direction - clear rooms in a fixed order instead of doubling back and scrambling your route |
| Maze | Note where the target room is before entering a door - reorient immediately after a “wrong room” so things do not spiral |
| Unknown | Book every hit as the worst case - better to spend extra resources on healing than to gamble on health |
| Labyrinth | XL floors run longer - split them into half-floors while exploring and do not miss the second Boss room or Treasure room |
Curse-related challenges#
Repentance has 45 challenges in total - for the full list, rules and rewards see Challenges. The ones directly tied to curse mechanics:
| Number | Name | Relation to curses |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | Pitch Black | Darkness and Unknown curses applied for the entire run |
| C10 | Cursed! | Curse of the Cursed applied throughout - completing it rewards the Credit Card |
| C34 | Ultra Hard | All enemies are elite variants - four curses applied throughout - and no red hearts spawn |
C1 Pitch Black and C10 “Cursed!” essentially turn curses into permanent rules - get comfortable handling all six curses in normal runs before touching these two.
Challenge names that are easy to misremember#
Several challenge names circulate in many versions - below are the verified ones; use them to correct common myths:
| Circulating claim | Actual name | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| C18 “The Guardian” | C18 The Host | Neither circulating name has anything to do with C18 |
| C40 “The Real Challenge” | C40 Seeing Double | A Jacob & Esau challenge - every enemy appears doubled |
| C42 “60 Seconds Speed” | C42 Hot Potato | A Tainted Forgotten challenge - with a mechanic that explodes every 2.5 seconds |
The timed “speed” experience actually corresponds to C22 SPEED! - the whole game is sped up, and after surviving 16 minutes the character starts taking damage continuously. Other frequently discussed challenges include C21 XXXL, C24 Pay To Play, C25 Have a Heart, C31 Backwards (a full run played in reverse starting from Mega Satan) and C44 Red Redemption - defer to the in-game descriptions for exact rules.
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do curses carry over to the next floor? | No - a curse only affects the current floor and is re-rolled when you descend; with Black Candle you are immune permanently |
| Can a floor have several curses at once? | In normal play each floor gets at most 1 common curse - drawn equally from the 6; multiple curses only occur in specific challenges and similar scenarios |
| Can I actively lower curse odds? | No - odds are set by save progress (see the table above); nothing done inside a run can change them |
| Why are all my items question marks? | That is the Blind curse - every item pedestal on this floor shows a question mark until picked up |
| Why do I never see Curse of the Cursed? | It never appears naturally - it only shows up in Challenge 10 “Cursed!” and with the “CVRS ED” seed |
Summary#
The numbers behind the curse system are actually very simple: one probability table that grows with save progress, plus 6 equal-probability options - what you draw is pure luck. What you can actually control is the response side: prioritize Black Candle, lean on Dagaz in the interim, and keep The Sun and Night Light in mind for Darkness; then avoid consumable traps like “Amnesia” and “???” that hand you a curse for free. Keep these points in mind and curses stop being a “random run-ender” and become a minor, skippable footnote.
