Tips & Tricks#

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) remains the benchmark for open-world games. It has a cinematic single-player story and an online world updated for over a decade. This guide splits practical tips by theme: how to finish the story and make money solo, how to drive and escape in Los Santos, how to shoot accurately, how to collect everything in one pass, and how to double your money in Online from zero — all battle-tested material.

1. Story Mode: Three Lives, One Main Line#

GTA 5’s story is cinematic: bill-ridden retired criminal Michael, street kid Franklin out to make his name, and the unhinged maniac Trevor. The game lets you switch between the three at any time between missions and free roam — the core mechanic and the foundation of every tip below.

Protagonist Role Special ability
Michael Professional criminal, shooter Bullet Time — slow time for precise shots
Franklin Street racer Driving slow-mo — cinematic dodges at high speed
Trevor Outlaw, pilot Red Mist — briefly boosts attack, defense and movement speed

How to switch properly: when police are on you, switching to another protagonist makes the pursuit vanish completely; before a cross-town mission, switch to the protagonist closest to the objective and drive over; when grinding gold medals that need precise shooting, lean on Michael’s Bullet Time. Remember the switch (Alt opens the wheel on PC by default) — it saves your life at key moments.

Story Pacing#

  • Don’t rush all side quests: the main story unlocks the core mechanics — heists, stock trading, property buying all arrive through the plot; grinding side quests early pays poorly.
  • Reach The Jewel Store Job ASAP: “The Jewel Store Job” unlocks the heist mission system — the watershed where the story starts paying real money. Prioritize reaching it.
  • Train abilities deliberately: Driving, Shooting, Stamina, Strength, Stealth and Flying accumulate through long-term use. Drive fast while roaming, aim for headshots in firefights, attend flight school — max the key stats before the credits so gold medals and collectibles go smoothly later.

2. Fast Money: Poor for Years, Rich Overnight#

Being broke early is normal, but the money routes are crystal clear. In priority order.

Story Missions Plus Side-Quest Safety Net#

  • Each story mission pays tens of thousands minimum; side quests, random events and street races all pay steadily.
  • Don’t sneer at small money early — build the three protagonists’ base capital; story investments are the capital for everything that follows.

Racing and Betting#

  • Street Races: complete the racing missions and street events — first place pays prize money plus tuning parts. A few wins in a row is your first nest egg.
  • Sports: golf, tennis and darts pay cash when you win and count toward 100% completion — two birds, one stone.
  • If unsure which way to bet, don’t raise — it’s entertainment, don’t stake your capital.

Stock Market: Buy in the Golden Window#

Story-mode stock investing is tightly bound to Lester’s assassination missions. The “golden window” means: buy the corresponding stock before the mission starts, wait 1-3 in-game days after it completes, then sell — returns typically run 50% to 300%. After the mission, go home and sleep to fast-forward time, and cash out as the price nears its peak.

Assassination Buy Expected return Key operation
The Hotel Assassination Betta Pharmaceuticals ~50% Buy before the mission, sleep and wait after
The Multi Target Debonaire Cigarettes ~80% Same
The Vice Assassination Fruit Computers ~300% The biggest single win — go all in
The Bus Assassination Tinkle ~100% Same
The Construction Assassination Gold Coast Development ~80% Same

Tip: hold all assassination money until just before the final mission, then rebalance per the “The Third Way” ending — the three protagonists can bank $2B+ combined. See the resources guide and story & missions.

Weapon Investment: Make the Story Smoother#

Making money isn’t just stacking cash — buy the gear the story needs. Heavy weapons beat flashy cosmetics — mid-to-late game enemies swarm, and a maxed rifle, an RPG and a stack of body armor change your error tolerance enormously. Split some earnings into ammo and equipment; the story moves much faster, and you can fund longer-term expenses later.

Ending Legacy: Pick the Third Way#

Of the three endings, Choice C (The Third Way) keeps all three protagonists alive. After the credits you can freely explore Los Santos, and your funds stretch further. For the “ending legacy”: liquidate every stock before the final showdown and split the cash evenly between the characters so each gets a fair share — the highest hidden-yield branch by far. Never pick an early exit.

3. Traversing Los Santos#

Los Santos is a miniature of Los Angeles — city, beach, desert and mountains all yours. How well you know the map directly decides whether you escape police and where you finish in races.

Terrain Parkour: Streets to Rooftops#

This is the essence of “parkour” — not just driving, but legs:

  • Vault fences: low rails and walls can be jumped — press jump at the barrier and over you go.
  • Rooftop routes: fire escapes and outdoor staircases on downtown towers are climbable — the trick for dodging pursuit, cutting shortcuts and taking great screenshots.
  • Alley runs: main roads jam up; alleys are always clear — diving into them in a chase shakes most pursuers.

Ramps, BMX and Sliding#

Los Santos is vertically built. The BMX is the most flexible unpowered ride on mountain trails, park stairs and dirt jumps — stairs and ramps are all rollable. There’s no skateboard, but the “slide-style movement” mindset applies anyway: chain jumps across ramps, slides and slopes between buildings and treat the blocks as your skatepark — that’s where the parkour fun lives.

Vehicle Driving Tips#

Vehicle Key techniques
Motorcycle Ease off throttle, then brake lightly into corners — never stomp the brake; a slightly raised front wheel climbs curbs
Supercar Long braking distance — slow early; no wheelspin off the line; hold throttle steady out of corners
Helicopter Hover with gentle throttle taps, not big stick inputs; reduce speed before lowering the collective
Fixed-wing aircraft Line up with the runway before cutting throttle, use rudder for heading — practice in the tutorial missions

Racers note: don’t max armor on a supercar — heavy and sluggish. Prioritize tires, suspension and transmission before the engine; don’t invert the physics.

4. Weapons and Combat#

GTA 5’s gunplay has its craft — a few habits decide your gold medals and mission outcomes.

A. Shooting and Headshots#

  • Aimed fire (holding the aim key) is the default; headshots are the most reliable damage and a requirement for many gold medals.
  • Shoot on the move — standing still makes you a live target, and getting hit staggers you. Minimize taking fire while planted.
  • Watch ammo; mid-to-late game a maxed rifle is your main weapon — the pistol is an early stopgap.

B. Cover and Peeking#

The cover system matters enormously — behind cover you automatically crouch; reloading, re-armoring and reading routes all depend on it:

  • Don’t camp one cover spot; swap between your own cover positions and peek only after reading the enemy’s firing rhythm.
  • Peek from one cover to the next while staying unexposed but never stopping damage — crucial in clearing fights.
  • Cover loses to grenades — when enemies hole up behind obstacles, flush them with grenades first.

C. Melee#

  • The melee button also vaults quickly; mashing unarmed swings can lock enemies down.
  • In close brawls, stay mobile and never trade head-on; when outnumbered, clear with guns first.

D. Aim Assist: Pick Right, Shoot Better#

GTA 5 offers two aiming modes — Default is “assisted aiming”, which lightly snaps toward enemies near your reticle. It’s especially friendly to controller players and the default for most new players and veterans alike.

Aiming mode Trait Best for
Assisted aiming (default) Reticle pulls toward enemies New players, controllers, smoothness
Free aim All manual reticle Precision veterans, sniping

Don’t rush to “freedom” — learn the feel with assisted aiming first; switch to free aim if you specifically want to drill headshots, and it’ll feel smoother once trained.

5. Collectibles: Gather Everything in One Pass#

Story mode has four collectible families, and completing them all feeds 100% completion and exclusive rewards.

Epsilon Program (Kifflom)#

“Kifflom” is the cult’s greeting and the series’ signature phrase. The Epsilon Program quests drag Michael through donations, robes and holy scripture transcribing until he finally breaks free — 10 quest segments in the line. It costs real money along the way, but the cult refunds part midway, making it half an investment.

Stage Content Key points
Donation Give money, sign up A few hundred to a few thousand per round — endure it
Ritual Buy robes, transcribe documents Purchase at the designated clothing store
Pilgrimage Visit designated spots to hear “sermons” Follow the prompts — easy enough

Letter Scraps#

  • 50 scraps scattered across Los Santos, torn pieces of a letter.
  • Collecting all triggers a random event and world moment, and it counts toward 100%.
  • Most scraps sit along street corners — grab them as you run the story rather than making dedicated trips.

Spaceship Parts#

  • 50 parts — wreckage components from a crashed UFO in the Los Santos outskirts, spread across mountains, rooftops and abandoned areas.
  • Complete the set and a “Space Docker” custom vehicle is waiting at a designated spot — the only way to obtain it.
  • After the credits, sweep region by region with a helicopter plus a parts map for efficiency.

Underwater Wonders: Submarine Wrecks#

  • Submarine wreckage (30 underwater wrecks and parts): requires diving gear; each site pays cash, and the total adds up handsomely.
  • Search coastal wreck points and the seabed below cliffs — watch your oxygen.

Tip: all of the above count toward 100% completion. Pair them with achievements and hidden content — see achievements & trophies and secrets.

6. GTA Online: Starting Out and the Wealth Path#

GTA Online has been updated continuously since 2013 with heists, races and PVP. Its currency (GTA$) is completely separate from the story. The early goals are clear: run jobs to build capital, buy property as a profit engine, then roll into the heist loop.

Prologue and First Steps#

  • Your first session is the prologue: basic tutorials, driving jobs, learning deliveries and car modding.
  • Levels 1-10: take Gerald and Simeon’s low-difficulty jobs — EXP and cash together build your base fund.
  • Don’t buy flashy vehicles early; buy “functional” assets first.

Property and Garages#

Asset Role Verdict
Apartment Comes with garage and mission hub A newcomer’s first base
Garage Store and modify vehicles Buy when you have cars — the bigger the better
Office CEO jobs and warehouse hub A second-phase necessity
Nightclub Passive income aggregator Stable dividends in the mid-late game

Remember the order: apartment → garage → office — later assets are worth more, but don’t skip steps.

The Heist Loop: Cayo Perico and the Casino#

  • Cayo Perico: Online’s most profitable “solo” heist. Buy a Kosatka submarine (~$2.2M), finish the scoping prerequisite, and afterwards you can run it solo in 40-60 minutes per session for a stable $900K-1.5M — a broke player’s first fortune.
  • The Diamond Casino: a heist that leans on team synergy — heavy prerequisites but high per-run payouts, with multiple approaches: the air-conditioning vents, disguising as staff, or a big-cash grab. Once you know the flow, alternate it with Cayo Perico as the standard loop.

Gang Wars#

  • Gang wars are common team activities in Online, fought across multiple gang territories as both sides contest turf.
  • Tactics: with numbers, split them up; with few players, hug cover and use a helicopter to suppress high ground first; after taking turf, extract promptly.
  • These modes feed both honor and rank levels and are a great gunplay gym.

7. Vehicle Tuning and Racing#

Vehicles are GTA 5’s centerpiece — tuning directly shapes handling, feel and race results.

  • Key components: engine, transmission and turbo define power; suspension and tires (especially drift tires) define handling; armor defines durability.
  • Tuning shops: Los Santos shops offer one-stop modding — note each mod carries a service fee, and you should save before hitting the track after a big rebuild.
  • Racing: pick by torque vs top speed — street races favor lightweight setups; off-road wants big tires and high torque, drifting through corners.
Component Effect Focus
Engine Power, top speed Racing core
Transmission Gear shifts, acceleration Secondary core
Suspension Handling, steering Track speed
Tires Grip and drift Huge feel impact
Armor Blast and crash resistance Career protection

8. Street Survival Tips#

  • Radio: switch tracks and stations from the car — a superb companion on long drives.
  • Barber: change hair and beards — a fresh look is almost a new identity, and it pairs well with dodging wanted levels.
  • Mod shop: wash your car and swap plates; it’s a street “sanctuary” too — duck inside while wanted to shake pursuit.
  • Interaction menu: press M for the interaction menu — quick access to your garage, shops, fast travel and co-op navigation, far easier than hunting storefronts.
  • Fast travel: flag a taxi and pay to jump to any marked point — saves enormous time on cross-town errands.
  • Night operations: many random events, gang activities and neon districts are livelier at night — push the story by day, prospect by night.

9. Common Misconceptions#

Misconception Truth
Being broke early is permanent Story + assassination stocks + racing — post-credits money is plenty to start
Investing everything in hardware The golden-window stock plays are the biggest pot — buy per the quest lines, don’t gamble
Getting caught because you can’t lose stars Wanted levels are avoidable — car washes, repaints, tunnels; the arrest fine is honestly small money
Skimping on gear Armor and ammo look expensive, but life is dearer — don’t economize
Opening too many collectible boxes Missing some is fine — sweep them all with a helicopter after the credits
Spinning in circles when lost Press M, mark the destination on the map, then move; trust navigation in the mountains
