What the Game Is#

Demon’s Souls is the action role-playing game FromSoftware created with Sony in 2009, fully rebuilt by Bluepoint Games in 2020 to next-generation specifications. You play a nameless warrior crossing Boletaria, a land corrupted by the ancient demon known as The Old One, hunting the demons entrenched in five fog-shrouded Archstone worlds one by one, harvesting their souls — until you personally decide the fate of humanity.

The remake re-renders the original’s desolate, magnificent gothic world at 4K and a steady 60 fps while keeping every original mechanic: the warped city and outskirts, the looping level shortcuts, and the multi-ending narrative stitched together by World Tendency and covenants. It is the best textbook for understanding the foundations of soulslike design, and the “great-grandmother” of nearly every modern hardcore action game.

Core Systems#

Souls, Body Form, and Soul Form#

  • Souls: both currency and experience, earned by hunting demons; on death they stay where you fell and can be recovered once — otherwise they are gone forever.
  • Soul Form: the state you live in after dying; maximum health is halved, you cannot be invaded by red phantoms, but you can summon blue phantoms to fight beside you.
  • Body Form: the full-health stance; you can summon white phantoms to travel with, yet it may also draw invading red phantoms at any moment; dying in Body Form pushes World Tendency toward black.

World Tendency#

World Tendency is Demon’s Souls’ most distinctive hidden system: your behavior out in the world keeps shifting each world’s tendency value.

State Effect Trigger
Pure White Enemies weaken, hidden passages open, white guardians appear Killing bosses in Soul Form, completing white-leaning events
Pure Black Enemies strengthen, red phantoms and black phantoms multiply, hidden treasure and powerful foes appear Dying in Body Form, squandering souls, attacking NPCs

Tendency decides which hidden events you can trigger, which rings and pureblood weapons you can obtain, and which side of the good-or-bad ending branch you reach.

Covenants#

Boletaria’s main story is not a single track; your choices settle and persist through covenants. Form an oath with The Maiden in Black and gain power that flows through souls. Different covenants decide which magic you can learn, which relics you acquire, and where the final ending bends. Good and evil hang on a single thought.

Equip Burden and Rolling#

Total equipment weight decides your roll speed, movement distance, and stamina cost. Full heavy armor buys damage reduction but makes you roll like a barrel; lean light gear is nimble but can die in a single hit. Balancing your load is the first piece of technique to master during the opening hours.

The Five Worlds#

Archstone world Stages Themes
Boletarian Palace 1-1 to 1-4 Royal city, ramparts, training grounds
Stonefang Tunnel 2-1 to 2-3 Mines, lava, dragon lair
Tower of Latria 3-1 to 3-3 Prison, sea tower, altar
Shrine of Storms 4-1 to 4-3 Storm temple, cliffs, rebels
Valley of Defilement 5-1 to 5-3 Swamp, corpse woods, abyss

Boss Roster#

Boss Location Key points
Phalanx Palace 1-1 Summons a wall of shield-bearing minions; strip them one by one, then backstab the core
Tower Knight Palace 1-2 Clear the soldiers on the platform first, then strike the weak point overhead
Penetrator Palace 1-3 Extremely fast attacks; alternate backstabs and shield blocks
King Allant Palace 1-4 Drains souls to lower your level; stay in close and dodge
Armored Spider Tunnel 2-1 Sweeping fire breath; attack from behind it
Flame Lurker Tunnel 2-2 Fights amid lava; roll through its swings and keep the pressure on
Dragon God Tunnel 2-3 Stay out of its sight line and use the mechanisms to bring it down
Fool’s Idol Tower 3-1 Dark duplicates; destroy the two triggering altars first
Maneater Tower 3-2 Two enemies at once; mind the ledges and gaps
Old Monk Tower 3-3 Effectively a multiplayer stunt — the boss mantle passes to an invading red phantom hunting kills
Adjudicator Shrine 4-1 A many-faced foe behind a slow-moving sword wall
Old Hero Shrine 4-2 Tracks by sound; approach silently and backstab
Storm King Shrine 4-3 Wield the storm sword against a swarm; a high-difficulty arena
Leech Monster Valley 5-1 Swamp-borne minions entangle you; clear them first
Dirty Colossus Valley 5-2 Chained rush attacks; circle behind to strike
Maiden Astrea Valley 5-3 A legendary guard battle and a major story set piece

Getting-Started Essentials#

The mechanics behind the genre’s founding game are not complicated, but the price of death is steep. A few tips for warriors newly arrived in Boletaria:

  1. Start as Knight or Priest: steadier starting gear and a higher tolerance for mistakes.
  2. Soul Form is the norm: do not rush to restore your body; learn the terrain first.
  3. Blocking beats dodging early on: master the shield first, then work on evasion.
  4. Push World Tendency toward white where you can, so you do not miss white-tendency-exclusive events later.
  5. Do not burn “soul remnants” recklessly early on; converting them into more cost-effective consumables goes further.
  6. Open shortcuts before anything else when mapping an area — do not force your way through; pushing forward is far easier once shortcuts are unlocked.
  7. Remember to repair weapon durability; top up repairs before heading out.
  8. “No-damage clears” are a goal for the later game; in the early game, spending souls to raise levels comes first.
  9. Leave messages for other players online, but keep an eye out for invasions too.
  10. Remember to “come back later”: plenty of treasure hides in corners you rarely revisit.

The Origin of It All#

Boletaria was once a kingdom as glorious as gold, until its king, beneath the overflowing earth, knocked on the door of the “Old One”. The ancient demon awoke, black fog consumed hearts, courtiers turned into ghosts, and the kingdom became a hunting ground for demons. You — the nameless warrior — are summoned three times by The Maiden in Black, trying across cycles to end it all.

The remake keeps the original mechanics while reinterpreting the world with finer lighting and detail: from the metallic weight of armor to the first glimmer of every dawn, everything moves closer to the desolate yet tender undertone behind the word “requiem”. It is a long road about willingness and salvation, and every death in the abyss is a reminder of why you should not give up easily.

Stage Suggested order
Early Palace 1-1 → Tunnel 2-1 for a good shield → Shrine 4-1 to pick up a bow
Mid Palace 1-2 → Tower 3-1 → Tunnel 2-2 to fight the Flame Lurker
Late Shrine 4-2/4-3 → Tower 3-2/3-3 → Palace 1-3/1-4

“Soul of the mind, key to life’s ether. Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel.” — the Song of Souls

Common New-Player Mistakes#

Many first-time players stumble into the same pits during the opening hours: treating souls as pure experience, or treating death as pure failure. Most of the mistakes below come from misunderstanding the systems — avoid them and your journey through Boletaria will go far more smoothly:

  1. Hurrying back to Body Form for full-health fights: dying in Body Form pushes World Tendency toward black, and black tendency directly strengthens every enemy on the map. In the early game “Soul Form is the norm” — do not trade a little health advantage for the risk of red phantom invasions.
  2. Spending every soul on levels: chasing levels alone leaves weapon upgrades and consumable reserves far behind. The three-way split of souls (levels, upgrades, supplies) is the rhythm that stabilizes a run.
  3. Ignoring equip burden until rolling turns sluggish: once total weight exceeds your capacity limit, rolling degrades into a slow barrel-roll, and boss dodge windows stop working. Build your load around “keeping a mid roll”.
  4. Forcing through without unlocking shortcuts: every world has its own shortcut network. Unlock shortcuts before backtracking for collectibles — that is the key to lowering the cost of death.
  5. Forgetting to repair weapons and shields: at zero durability weapons grow noticeably brittle and lose damage, and a good mid-game shield eats durability in prolonged fights. Visit the blacksmith at the Nexus before heading out.

Soul Farming and Growth Rhythm#

Veterans talk about “soul farming”: running established routes to accumulate souls quickly, funding key stats, weapon upgrades, and supplies. A recommended rhythm for the opening stretch:

Stage Focus Approach
Early (1-1) Palace soldier clusters Backstab the greatshield soldiers, learn execution timing, bank basic souls
Mid (2-1/2-2) Tunnel lava creatures Block fire breath with your shield, hit the fire weakness from behind, recycle the souls
Late (before 4-2’s Old Hero) The ash corridors Sneak up on the pale shades for backstabs — profitable and safe
Endgame (pure-black twin bugs) Chain-farm the twin bugs They drop stone-shard-type valuables, restocking your supplies fast

Farming is a means, not an end. Endless grinding carries real risk: an over-leveled character whose mechanics have not caught up, which only delays the real decisions about World Tendency and the covenant branches.

Making the Most of Saves#

Players of the remake commonly manage tendency and choices with a USB save backup: before a string of irreversible story moments (transformations, certain boss conversations, soul-sealing events, and the like), copy your save to a USB drive so a failure can be rolled back. It does not change normal play, but it lets you safely experience both the pure-white and pure-black tendency events, plus both the good and evil endings.

Online Play Notes#

Online, messages are scattered across every corner of the world, and the hints inside them are mostly good advice laced with tricks — beware the “keep going forward” trap. Red phantom invasions are the standing trial of Body Form play; do not be discouraged when invaded — your souls stay where you fell, and there is a lesson in it. Dark encounters, such as the special black NPC in pure-black events, reward one-of-a-kind items, provided you are willing to take the risk in a black-leaning world.

Graphics and Settings Recommendations#

Bluepoint’s remake offers several graphics presets; for players chasing either image quality or frame rate:

Setting Recommended Notes
Graphics mode Quality / Performance Quality keeps ray tracing and distant views; Performance holds a steady 60 fps
Motion blur Off Cleaner image; long dodge rolls stay readable
Subtitles On Helps follow the Maiden in Black and the sacred beast’s dialogue
Contrast calibration Fine-tune per display Visibility in black-fog areas improves
Sound Keep defaults Demon roars and war drums are positional — friendly even to the sound-illiterate
  • Dark Souls 3 — the polished finale of the spiritual successor trilogy, with superb boss fights
  • Bloodborne — FromSoftware’s gothic descendant of the same lineage, with equally punishing combat
  • Sifu — a hardcore kung-fu action game about precision and persistence
  • Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty — a soulslike action RPG set in the Three Kingdoms era
  • Stellar Blade — a sci-fi action RPG with demanding combat
  • Wuchang: Fallen Feathers — a modern soulslike that inherits the same death-and-retry loop
