Why You Should Play Dark Souls II#
Dark Souls II is the most distinctive entry in the series — the most debated one, and also the richest in content. It has the largest weapon arsenal in the trilogy, the deepest build variety, the longest main story, and the most intricate PvP. Scholar of the First Sin bundles all three DLCs and reworks enemy placement, making it the definitive way to experience the game.
Massive Content#
- More than 30 main bosses, the highest count in the trilogy
- Three large DLCs, each with brand-new areas and multiple bosses
- Over 200 weapons and 100 sorceries, miracles, pyromancies, and hexes
- Several completely different routes through the game
Unique Mechanics#
- The Adaptability (ADP) stat and the Agility system
- Power Stance dual-wielding
- The weapon infusion system
- Bonfire Ascetic — respawn an area’s boss at a higher difficulty tier
- Human Effigy and Hollowing mechanics
The Best PvP in the Series#
Dark Souls II has the most balanced and complex PvP of the series, with arenas, invasions, and several covenant-based PvP modes.
Core Mechanics at a Glance#
| Mechanic | What it does |
|---|---|
| Adaptability | Raises Agility, which sets roll invincibility frames and item-use speed |
| Hollowing | Every death lowers max HP; restore it with a Human Effigy |
| Power Stance | Dual-wielding two weapons of the same class grants special attack moves |
| Weapon infusion | Use titanite and souls to add stat scaling or elemental damage |
| Soul Memory | Matchmaking uses total souls acquired, not character level |
| Bonfire Ascetic | Pushes a chosen bonfire’s area up to the next New Game+ difficulty tier |
| Estus Flask | Your basic restorative; upgrade its charge count with shards |
| Attunement | Attunement slots set how many spells you can equip |
Beginner FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How hard is it? | Harder than the first Dark Souls to adapt to, but slower and more strategic once learned. |
| Best starting class? | Warrior is the most balanced; Explorer suits veterans. |
| Why is ADP important? | It determines your roll i-frames; get Agility to at least 96-99. |
| Can I play online? | Yes — co-op, invasions, and arenas are all supported. |
| What is Soul Memory? | The matchmaking parameter; it is unrelated to level. |
| Do I need to play the first game? | No — the story is largely independent. |
| SotFS vs the original? | All DLCs included, enemies repositioned, 60 fps, more NPC invasions. |
| Recommended weapons? | The rapier is overpowered, the Greatsword is practical, the Great Club is strong. |

Where the Difficulty Comes From#
Difficulty in Dark Souls II stacks up from several sources:
| Source | What it feels like | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptability system | Few invincibility frames early, so rolling feels bad | Raise ADP above 20 first |
| Enemy groups | Several enemies attack at once | Pull them with a bow and kill one at a time |
| Hit stun | Long stagger after taking a hit | Watch your stamina management |
| Poison pools | Several areas have poison terrain | Carry poison-clearing moss and poison-resistant gear |
| Curse | Drains souls | Collect curse-resistant rings |
About This Guide#
This guide was written for Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin (version 1.10+ / Calibrations 2.02). All data comes from in-game testing and community research, and the build recommendations reflect the current balance.
New Player Notes#
Dark Souls II overhauled the mechanics of its predecessor, and Adaptability (ADP) is the system newcomers overlook most. ADP determines how many invincibility frames your roll has; spending early points to push it above 20 noticeably improves the feel of dodging. On top of that, Hollowing cuts your max HP after every death, and only a Human Effigy restores it.
Your early core goals: get your first infused weapon, light the main area’s bonfires, and raise ADP to 20. Push through the main story in order while clearing the side areas along the way to bank souls and items. A balanced Warrior or Knight start will carry you smoothly through the opening hours.

SotFS Exclusives: New Enemies and Item Changes#
Compared with vanilla Dark Souls II, Scholar of the First Sin substantially reworks enemy placement, item locations, and NPC events. The table below lists the most important changes to check against as you progress.
| Area | New or changed enemies | Key item changes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Majula | New red invader, the “Wandering Mage” | Early-game soul values increased; a key can be bought earlier | Clear nearby mobs before triggering the invasion |
| Forest of Fallen Giants | Three new “dark spirit” guards on the ballista platform | The Fire Longsword moved inside a metal chest | Pull from range first on the ballista platform to avoid being surrounded |
| Lost Bastille | A pack of curse frogs outside McDuff’s workshop | The Titanite Slab moved to the lower waterway | Bring a poison-resist ring or antidote moss before entering |
| Sinner’s Rise | Two red-spirit guards before the boss room | Life Ring +1 moved to a hidden wall niche | Summon an NPC with the White Sign Soapstone before the fog gate |
| Huntsman’s Copse | New patrol routes for dual-blade skeletons | The Silverblack Spear now drops from a petrified NPC | Skeletons are weak to strike damage — club-type weapons recommended |
| The Gutter | A carrion colossus added in the lower poison pits | The Dark Flame tome moved to an upper wooden shelf | Equip a poison-bite ring and carry moss in the pits |
| Black Gulch | A three-part gargoyle gauntlet added | The King’s Shield moved behind a hidden wall | Pull the gargoyles one by one; never fight them together |
| Brightstone Cove | A Spider Queen elite in the mine tunnels | The Dark Quartz Ring now drops from a chest | The tunnels are narrow — use firebombs to clear the webs |
| Drangleic Castle | Two Dragonriders guarding the throne | The Dragonrider Bow moved to the top balcony | Use pillars to split them up and kill one at a time |
| Shrine of Amana | Singing priestesses along the riverbank as ranged casters | Blue Tearstone Ring +2 in a hidden cave | Carry Magic Shield or Great Magic Shield |
| Undead Crypt | A dark-spirit knight on the stairway | The Greatsword moved to a lower chest | The knight gives chase — go up the stairs and circle left behind it |
| Dragon Shrine | Drakekeeper warriors on the platform edges | Dragon Scale trades now include Petrified Dragon Bone shards | Do not trade blows head-on — roll in and backstab |
SotFS Exclusives: NPC Event Changes#
The following events trigger differently or award differently in Scholar of the First Sin — follow the new logic:
- Creighton: he attacks on sight when you first meet him in The Gutter; defeating him grants Creighton’s armor set and the dark silver dagger. The vanilla version triggers in Drangleic Castle — now moved earlier, to The Gutter.
- Navlaan the Apostate: new dialogue in the Brightstone Cove mines. Complete his poison-gathering task (deliver 5 poison mosses) to receive Poisonbite Ring +2, which the vanilla version does not offer.
- Osteran, the castle merchant: now sells the Dark Blessing spell, but only after you defeat the two Dragonriders and talk to him again. In the vanilla game the spell is picked up in the Shaded Woods.
- Miltan the cleric: can now be summoned in the Undead Crypt; if he survives the boss fight, he gifts Saint’s Talisman +2 instead of the ordinary talisman.
- Lucatiel, the blacksmith’s daughter: a new side quest in Majula — talk to her while carrying the Soul of the Ancient Dragon to unlock trading Dragon Scales for the Dragon Tooth.
Advanced Play: SotFS Combat and Resource Tips#
- Linked enemy aggro: in the Forest of Fallen Giants and The Gutter, hitting a distant enemy with a ranged weapon pulls in 2-3 nearby ones at the same time. Throw a knife to draw out a single enemy, then finish it in melee instead of getting surrounded.
- Dark spirit drop rule: every new red invader (the Wandering Mage, the dark-spirit knight) always drops a Human Effigy and a Dark Fragment. When Effigies are scarce early on, you can trigger the Majula invasion repeatedly to farm them.
- Bonfire burning spawns: after burning a Bonfire Ascetic, some areas spawn extra dark-spirit elites (such as Brightstone Cove’s Spider Queen), which always drop Dark Quartz or Dark Fragments — the main late-game material source for upgrading dark weapons.
- Poison and petrification rebalance: SotFS raises poison damage by roughly 30% and lowers petrification odds. In The Gutter and Black Gulch, favor the Black Witch set or the Paladin set over the vanilla poison-resistant set.
- Summon sign placement changed: before the boss fogs of Sinner’s Rise and the Undead Crypt, summon signs are no longer fixed and appear randomly on either side. If you cannot find one, clear the surrounding mobs and reload the area.
A Beginner-Friendly SotFS Speedrun Route#
| Step | Target area | Core actions | Suggested level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Majula | Open every chest; buy the Fire Longsword and a Life Ring | 5-8 |
| 2 | Forest of Fallen Giants | Kill the dark-spirit guards and take the Fire Longsword | 10-12 |
| 3 | Lost Bastille | Skirt the curse frogs and open McDuff’s workshop | 15-18 |
| 4 | Sinner’s Rise | Summon an NPC and defeat The Lost Sinner | 22-25 |
| 5 | Huntsman’s Copse | Gather Silverblack Spear materials while avoiding the dual-blade skeletons | 28-30 |
| 6 | The Gutter | Equip a poison-resist ring and take the Dark Flame tome | 35-38 |
| 7 | Black Gulch | Defeat the gargoyles and take the King’s Shield | 42-45 |
