Baldur’s Gate 3 Combat System#

Core Combat Mechanics#

Baldur’s Gate 3 uses turn-based D&D 5E rules — each character gets an Action, a Bonus Action, and Movement per turn. The Action is core — attack/cast/use items. The Bonus Action is a secondary action — some skills and items use it. Movement is for positioning — and can be split up (move a few steps → attack → move a few more). Turn-based D&D 5E rules — each character has Action, Bonus Action, and Movement per turn. Action is core — attack/cast/use item. Bonus Action is secondary — some skills and items. Movement can be split (move → attack → move).

Environmental Interaction#

Baldur’s Gate 3 battlefields are full of interactive objects — using the environment can make fights far easier. High ground advantage: attacking enemies below from elevation = +2 attack roll. Low ground disadvantage: the reverse = -2 attack roll. High Ground: Attacking from above = +2 attack roll. Low Ground: Vice versa = -2 attack roll.

Surface System#

Surface Created By Effect
Fire Fire Bolt / Fireball / oil + fire 1d4 fire damage per round
Ice ice spells / Ray of Frost walking on it may slip (prone)
Water Create Water / water bottles conducts electricity (double lightning damage) / can be frozen
Poison cloud poison vials / certain spells 2d4 poison damage per round
Oil oil flasks / burning hands (byproduct) ignitable (explosion) / slows when unlit
Hallowed ground certain Cleric abilities heals 1d4 on entry / damages undead
Blood injured creatures certain spells can combo with it
Fog Fog Cloud / gas traps blocks line of sight / ranged attacks fail
Webs spider spells / traps slows — restrains
Darkness Darkness / certain demon abilities full concealment / combos with Warlock Devil’s Sight

Maximizing Environmental Interaction#

  1. Water bottle + lightning spell — the first character splashes the boss with a water bottle (whole party prepared) → the second lands a lightning spell (double lightning damage on Wet targets) — the cheapest burst damage in the game
  2. Oil + Fireball — pour oil in a narrow passage → wait for enemies to step on it → Fireball ignites the oil — every enemy takes the 2d6 explosion + the Fireball’s 8d6 — 10d6+ total damage
  3. Ice surface + Shove — create ice to make enemies slip → shove them off a cliff with a bonus action once they’re prone — one ice spell can wipe an entire group
  4. Fog Cloud + ranged immunity — cast Fog Cloud on your own position — ranged enemies can’t see you and therefore can’t attack you — but you can step out, attack, and step back — extremely effective against archer enemies
  5. Create Water + ice spell — wet the ground first → then cast the ice spell → one huge ice sheet — every enemy in range slips — combine with elevated terrain so they can’t stand up for a full round

Tactical Strategy#

Fighting from High Ground#

Melee: leap down from above for bonus damage + knockdown. Ranged: high ground = +2 attack roll — better accuracy and crit chance. Shoving: shove enemies off cliffs from height — instant death (ignores HP) — the most fun and most efficient kill in the game

The Control and Burst Cycle#

Round 1: casters apply crowd control (Sleep / Hold Person / Fear) → the tank moves up and pulls aggro → the Rogue Hides to set up a sneak attack. Round 2: the Rogue sneak-attacks a controlled enemy (auto-crit) + the Fighter bursts with Action Surge → casters finish off / keep controlling. Round 3: clean up survivors or prepare for the next wave. This loop applies to most fights — control early, burst mid, clean up late

Tactical Roles by Class#

Class Tactical Role Core Combat Strategy
Fighter front-line damage/tank Action Surge burst — Battle Master’s Trip/Disarm/Precision attacks
Rogue single-target burst/scouting stealth + sneak attack — exploit terrain advantages
Wizard AoE/control/support Fireball to clear — Haste to support — Counterspell to protect the backline
Cleric healing/buffs/control Bless + Spiritual Weapon + Hold Person — all-round support
Paladin single-target burst/tank Divine Smite + heavy hits — the highest single hit in the game
Ranger ranged damage/exploration high ground + Hunter’s Mark + Sharpshooter — steady damage
Warlock sustained damage/control Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast — the most reliable cantrip damage
Bard support/control/skills Bardic Inspiration + control spells + skill expert
Monk mobile damage/control Ki + unarmed combos — high mobility — Stunning Strike control
Druid shapeshift tank/healing Bear form pulls aggro — healing spells for sustain

Party Composition Suggestions#

Party Type Composition Strengths Best For
The classic quartet Fighter + Wizard + Cleric + Rogue all-round — an answer for every scenario beginners on a first run
Full martial squad Fighter + Paladin + Monk + Rogue extreme burst — fast kills players who know the system
Full caster party Wizard + Sorcerer + Warlock + Cleric unmatched AoE — extreme-range strikes Tactician difficulty
Control-focused party Bard + Wizard + Cleric + Warlock enemies never get to act high-difficulty fights
Stealth assassin squad Rogue (Assassin) + Ranger (Gloom Stalker) + Warlock + Wizard first-strike ambush clears a wave in one round clearing trash mobs

Special Ground Combat Techniques#

Opportunity Attacks#

When an enemy within your melee range makes a ranged attack, casts a spell, or tries to leave your range — you can use your reaction to make one melee attack. How to exploit it: deliberately park the tank next to an enemy — they’ll be too afraid to move or cast — effectively a soft control. Tactic: Position tank next to enemy — enemy becomes reluctant to move or cast — effectively a soft CC.

Flanking#

When you and another ally stand on opposite sides of an enemy — your melee attacks against that enemy have Advantage (roll twice, take the higher). Flanking is the core melee tactic — Rogues especially need it to trigger Sneak Attack.

Jump Tactics#

Jumping costs only a bonus action — but it lets you bypass obstacles and surfaces. Enhanced jumps (Feather Fall/Jump) let a character leap huge distances — straight into the enemy backline to cut down squishy mages. Jump attack: jumping onto an enemy from height deals extra fall damage + can knock them prone. Jump Attack: Jump from height onto enemy = bonus fall damage + prone chance.

Difficulty Comparison#

Difficulty Enemy HP Multiplier Enemy Hit Bonus Legendary Actions Recommended Players
Explorer x0.5 -2 none newcomers/story players
Balanced x1.0 +0 none the standard experience
Tactician x1.3 +2 none (but smarter AI) experienced players
Honour x1.5 +3 yes (all bosses) extreme challengers

Honour Mode Highlights#

Single save file (death deletes it — dead characters cannot be revived / a full party wipe = run failed and reverted to normal mode). Bosses have Legendary Actions (one extra action per round — interrupts your combos). Much smarter enemy AI (focuses fire on casters first / smarter positioning). All-new legendary boss skills (e.g., Gale’s legendary action can counter your spells). Clear reward: the golden dice skin (account-wide). Legendary Actions (bosses get 1 extra action per turn — interrupts combos). Smart AI (prioritize casters/smarter positioning). Unique legendary boss skills. Reward: Golden dice skin (account-wide).

Full List of Honour Mode Boss Legendary Actions#

Auntie Ethel summons an illusion clone each round — clones can cast AoE the clones — single-target the real one
Ketheric Thorm heals 30+ HP per round — summons undead suppress with blessed weapons/radiant spells

Winning Strategies for Honour Mode#

Burst squad: Rogue (Assassin) level 12 + Cleric (War Domain) + Wizard (Evocation) + Fighter (Champion). The Assassin goes invisible before combat starts → sneak attack (auto-crit + doubled crit damage) → the Fighter bursts with Action Surge → the Wizard clears with Fireball. Most fights end in round one. For boss fights use the control chain: Cleric’s Hold Person → the Assassin crits → the Wizard sustains with Haste. Don’t fight every battle on Honour Mode — some can be avoided or resolved through dialogue

Honour Mode survival strategy: the stretch before level 4 is the hardest part of the game — avoid fights — level up through dialogue and exploration. At level 4 you gain key feats and combat power jumps massively. Insurance plan: every character carries an invisibility potion — if a wipe is imminent — drink it and run — revive fallen allies once combat ends

Honour Mode Early Leveling Route#

Target Level Recommended Area Content
1→3 beach → Druid Grove loot gear — dialogue XP — avoid fights / Loot — dialogue XP — avoid fights
3→4 Blighted Village stealth assassinations — pick enemies off one by one / Stealth kills — pick off one by one
4→5 goblin camp after level 4 combat power jumps massively / After 4, power spike
5→6 Underdark level 5 brings Extra Attack/3rd-level spells — a qualitative leap / Lv5 extra attack/3rd level spells — game changer
