Economy Management#
The economy is the foundation of every high-scoring Balatro build — money makes interest, and interest feeds the build. Every number in this chapter is compiled from the official mechanics.

| Economy Jokers |
Depends on the effect |
Golden Joker and others keep producing money |
| Selling cards |
Half price |
Both Jokers and consumables can be sold — the sell price is half the original |
Real Economy Jokers#
| Joker |
Effect |
Role |
| Golden Joker |
+$4 at end of round |
A stable economy engine — pays for itself in about two rounds |
| Egg |
Sell value +$3 at end of round |
Worth more the longer you hold it, cashed out when you sell it |
| Bull |
+2 chips for every $1 saved |
Turns the economy straight into power — a regular in High Card builds |
| Rough Gem |
Each scoring Diamond card earns $1 |
A money printer exclusive to Diamond builds |
| Business Card |
Played face cards have a 1/2 chance to earn $2 |
Side income for face card builds |
Note: names like Money Barrel, On Credit, Merchant and Thrifty spread widely through early guides, but they do not exist in the official Joker list — money-generating Jokers and interest Vouchers are the whole of the official economy system.
Reroll Economics#
| Rule |
Value |
| Base reroll price |
$5 |
| Increase |
+$1 for each additional reroll ($5 → $6 → $7…) |
| Voucher modifiers |
Reroll Surplus lowers the base price, Reroll Glut changes the increase |
| Situation |
Advice |
| Savings of $25+ and no useful Jokers |
You can reroll 2-3 times — hunt for a core piece |
| Savings below $10 |
Do not reroll — protect your interest principal |
| Missing the last piece of the puzzle |
Reroll until you find it — a core Joker is worth far more than interest |
Skip the Small Blind or Big Blind to get a Tag. Tags trigger in the order you get them, and Tags of the same kind stack.
| Tag |
Effect |
Value comment |
| Investment Tag |
Get $25 after defeating the Boss Blind |
Planting money directly — the economy takes off |
| Uncommon Joker Tag |
A free Uncommon Joker appears in the shop |
A safe profit |
| Rare Joker Tag |
A free Rare Joker appears in the shop |
High value |
| Negative Tag |
The next uneditioned shop Joker is free and becomes Negative |
Takes no slot — one of the most valuable Tags in the game |
| Double Tag |
Copies the next Tag you choose |
Doubles your profit with Investment/Negative Tags |
| Economy Tag |
Doubles your money (cap $40) |
Perfect to use at $40 saved |
| Voucher Tag |
The next shop has one extra Voucher |
A free permanent buff |
| Boss Tag |
Rerolls the Boss Blind |
Swap in a Boss you can beat |
| D6 Tag |
Rerolls in the next shop start at $0 |
A free refresh |
| Orbital Tag |
Upgrades a chosen hand type by 3 levels |
A free, stronger Planet card |
| Speed Tag |
$5 for each Blind skipped this run |
Pair it with a skip-heavy build |
| Handy Tag |
$1 for each hand played this run |
Small money early on |
Skip principle: a Blind you actually play gives you a shop, reward cash and interest — in most cases playing beats skipping. Only skip when the Tag is clearly worth more than “reward + interest + shop opportunity”, for example taking an Investment Tag at Ante 1-2, or stacking a Double Tag onto a Negative Tag.
Economy Strategy by Stage#
| Stage |
Strategy |
| Ante 1-2 |
Save $25 to max out interest — unless a core Joker shows up |
| Ante 3-5 |
Hold the $25 line, spend the surplus on Jokers and Vouchers |
| Ante 6-8 |
Save $50 if you have To the Moon, otherwise spend everything — clearing pressure comes first |
| Endless mode |
Money only matters for refreshing the shop — focus on finding core components |
Economy Health Check#
Spend ten seconds checking these before every shop visit:
| Check |
Healthy state |
Danger sign |
| Savings |
Hold $15-25 through Ante 1-3 |
Down to $3 already in Ante 2 |
| Interest |
A steady $3-5 every round |
$0 for two rounds in a row |
| Rerolls |
0-2 per round |
3 or more per round |
| Core Jokers |
2-3 usable ones |
No build together by Ante 4 |
| Selling habits |
Sell transitional Jokers in time |
Slots clogged with dead cards |
Common Economy Mistakes#
| Mistake |
Correct play |
| Spending everything at the start |
Keep $15-25 to earn interest — the economy is a snowball |
| Hoarding consumables you never use |
Consumables take slots and earn no interest — use them or sell them |
| Thinking rerolls are always $5 |
Rerolls go up $1 each time — three rerolls cost $18 |
| Grabbing “economy Jokers” like Money Barrel/Merchant on sight |
Those do not exist officially — stick to Golden Joker, Egg and Bull |
| Emptying your savings before a Boss |
The shop comes right after the Boss — save up in advance |
| Skipping blindly for Tags |
Skipping gives up reward + interest + shop — usually a bad trade |
