Scoring System#
Scoring in Balatro looks simple — Chips × Mult. But understanding the resolution order and which layer each source applies at is the real key to putting up big numbers
Core Scoring Order#
| Order |
Step |
Details |
| 1 |
Select cards |
Choose the 1-5 cards you want to play |
| 2 |
Hand type check |
The system determines which hand type this set of cards forms |
| 3 |
Base score |
Base Chips and base Mult granted according to hand type and level |
| 4 |
Scoring cards |
Each scoring card triggers from left to right — rank Chips and Enhancement effects accumulate in order |
| 5 |
+Mult |
All additive Mult Jokers trigger in order from left to right |
| 6 |
×Mult |
All multiplicative Mult Jokers multiply together in order from left to right |
| 7 |
Final score |
Total Chips × Total Mult = final score |
Position matters: scoring runs strictly left to right — put additive Mult Jokers to the left of multiplicative ones (add first, then multiply); the relative position of ×Mult Jokers directly changes the result

Pair and High Card scale steadily but their Mult grows slowly (+1 per level) — Three of a Kind / Straight / Straight Flush gain +2 to +4 Mult per level, so their curve is far steeper
Chip Sources#

| Hand base |
5-160 |
Depends on hand type and level |
| Card rank |
2-11 |
2-10 at face value, J/Q/K count as 10, A as 11 |
| Bonus Card |
+30 |
Enhancement card, adds Chips directly |
| Stone Card |
+50 |
Ignores suit and rank — a flat +50 Chips |
| Joker bonuses |
Varies |
Matador (+2 Chips per $1 saved), Stone Joker, and others |
+Mult and ×Mult#
| Property |
+Mult |
×Mult |
| Stacking |
Additive |
Multiplicative |
| Early strength |
Very strong |
Needs a base |
| Late potential |
Limited |
No ceiling |
| Signature Jokers |
Joker (+4), Smiley Face (face cards +5) |
Baron (Kings in hand ×1.5), Bloodstone (1/3 chance on Hearts ×2) |
Balance principle: add first, then multiply — multiplicative Mult feeds on the base that additive Mult stacks up. Build the engine with +Mult early, then shift toward ×Mult dominance from Ante 5 onward
Trigger and Retrigger Mechanics#
| Trigger source |
Effect |
| Base trigger |
Each scoring card triggers once by default |
| Red Seal |
That card triggers twice |
| Sock and Buskin |
Face cards retrigger once |
| Hack |
Cards of rank 2, 3, 4, 5 retrigger once |
| Dusk |
All cards in the final hand of each round retrigger |
Red Seals stack with retrigger Jokers: a King in hand with a Red Seal + Sock and Buskin = 3 triggers — in Baron builds that is ×1.5 cubed, i.e. ×3.375
Common Scoring Questions#
| Question |
Answer |
| Does a shattered Glass Card still give ×2? |
Yes — the shatter check doesn’t affect this scoring instance |
| How does a Steel Card work? |
It works while held in hand — no need to play it. With a Red Seal it also triggers twice in hand |
| Which resolves first, +Mult or ×Mult? |
Addition first (accumulate), multiplication after (chain) — left to right by position |
| Do leftover cards score? |
No — High Card scores only the highest one; the rest are just filler (Stone Cards excepted) |
| Does card order affect the score? |
It affects the hand type — but hand type detection isn’t affected by the order you click the cards |

about 1.6e77 |

| 32 |
about 2.7e179 |
|
| 39 |
about 4.8e309 → naneinf |
Beyond the double-precision float limit — Ante 39 is the theoretical cap |
Green Stake raises the score requirement (Ante 8 becomes 100,000), and Purple Stake and above raise it further (200,000) — while the Plasma Deck doubles the requirement. Endless scores grow super-exponentially and overflow to naneinf at Ante 39, which is also the highest Ante reachable without exploits
Early-Game Scoring Transition Strategy#
| Stage |
Target |
Means |
| Ante 1-2 |
A few thousand |
Base score plus simple Jokers is enough — no rush to buy Mult |
| Ante 3-4 |
Tens to hundreds of thousands |
Lock in your main hand type — start stacking +Mult |
| Ante 5-6 |
Millions |
Introduce ×Mult — mind Joker placement |
| Ante 7-8 |
Tens of millions |
Core build online — stack everything |
Common Scoring Misconceptions#
| Misconception |
Correct view |
| Stacking only Mult and no Chips |
However high your Mult, it needs Chips underneath — keep the two balanced |
| Joker placement doesn’t matter |
+Mult left, ×Mult right — order directly changes the score |
| Upgrading Planet cards at random |
Upgrade only your main hand type and your backup — resources are limited |
| Making every key card Glass |
Glass has a 1/4 chance to shatter — it still scores when it breaks, but the card is gone |
| Thinking Royal Flush is its own hand type |
It shares its level with Straight Flush — just upgrade Straight Flush |
