Balatro Beginner’s Guide#

Balatro’s rules are simple — play cards, score, clear the Blind. But to consistently win runs you need to understand the scoring formula, the interest-based economy, and build crafting. This chapter lays the groundwork from zero.

Game Objective#

Climb from Ante 1 to Ante 8, defeating the Boss Blind of every Ante. Each Ante has three rounds: Small Blind → Big Blind → Boss Blind. Reach the target score to pass; fall short and the run ends. Score requirements climb from 300 at Ante 1 all the way to 50,000 at Ante 8.

Basic Flow of a Run#

Phase Details
Start Pick a deck (only the Red Deck is available by default; the rest unlock through the Collection) — starting funds $4
Blind phase Each round, play 1-5 cards to form a poker hand and score. By default you get 3 hands and 3 discards per round
Payout Beating a Blind pays out: Small Blind $3, Big Blind $4, Boss Blind $5, plus $1 per unused hand and interest on your savings
Shop After each Blind you enter the shop — buy Jokers, Tarot/Planet/Spectral cards, packs, and vouchers
Victory Beat the Ante 8 Boss Blind to win the run, then optionally continue into Endless Mode

Scoring Formula#

Score = Chips × Mult. Resolution order: first the poker hand’s base Chips, then add the rank values and enhancements of every scoring card, then +Mult Jokers trigger in sequence, and finally ×Mult Jokers multiply one after another.

Example Calculation Score
Pair (10 Chips ×2) + two Kings (10 Chips each) (10+10+10) × 2 60
Flush (35 ×4) + five Hearts (8 Chips each) (35+40) × 4 300
Flush + two Jokers (+8 Mult and +10 Mult) (35+40) × (4+8+10) 1,650

Poker Hands Quick Reference (Official Level 1 Values)#

Hand Chips Mult Notes
High Card 5 1 Your single highest card — no hand combination
Pair 10 2 Two cards of the same rank
Two Pair 20 2 Two pairs of different ranks
Three of a Kind 30 3 Three cards of the same rank
Straight 30 4 Five consecutive ranks (the Ace can be high or low, not both)
Flush 35 4 Five cards of the same suit
Full House 40 4 Three of a Kind plus a Pair
Four of a Kind 60 7 Four cards of the same rank
Straight Flush 100 8 Flush plus Straight
Royal Flush 100 8 A special case of the Straight Flush (10-A); shares its level with Straight Flush

There are also three “secret hands”: Five of a Kind (120/12), Flush House (140/14), and Flush Five (160/16) — these require duplicated cards to pull off, and only show up in the Run Info after you have played them once.

Joker Basics#

Concept Details
Joker slots 5 to start — Negative editions take no slot, and the Antimatter voucher permanently adds +1
Rarity Common (blue), Uncommon (green), Rare (red), Legendary (purple)
Shop odds Common 70%, Uncommon 25%, Rare 5% — Legendaries never appear in the shop and can only be pulled from the Spectral card “Soul”
Effect types +Mult, ×Mult, +Chips, plus economy and trigger effects

Economy Lesson One: Interest#

At the end of every round, interest is paid on your savings — $1 per $5 held, capped at $5 ($25 banked maxes it out). Early on, try not to spend below $15 unless there is a core Joker you simply must buy. After buying the Seed Money voucher, the interest cap rises to $10 ($50 banked maxes it out).

Shop Purchase Priority#

Priority Item Why
1 Jokers Your core power — a build with no Jokers can barely clear a run
2 Vouchers Permanent effects — Crystal Ball, Overstock and the like reshape your build
3 Tarot/Planet cards Edit your deck and level poker hands — choose based on your strategy
4 Packs Prioritize when you need heavy deck editing (Arcana Packs, Spectral Packs)
5 Spectral cards Powerful but risky — go easy on the destroy and money-wipe ones

Shop tip: A reroll starts at $5 and costs $1 more each time — it is not a flat price. Know what you want before deciding whether to reroll.

Opening Tips#

# Advice Details
1 Buy Jokers in the first 3 rounds Without a build engine, even maxed hand levels can’t clear Ante 5
2 Keep savings to earn interest Hold $25 through the first 4 rounds — that’s $5 free every round
3 Don’t chase too many strategies Pairs or Flushes are the safest — focus on leveling 1-2 hand types
4 Learn to read Bosses The Blind select screen shows the next Boss — prepare one round ahead
5 Keep your deck lean Stay at 30-45 cards — use The Hanged Man (destroys 2 cards) to trim it
6 Restart when it’s time If no decent Joker shows in the first 2 rounds, a fresh run saves time
7 Selling Jokers is no loss Sell transitional Jokers once they’ve done their job — sell price is half the purchase price

Beginner Build Path#

  1. Deck: The default Red Deck (+1 discard) works great; switch to the Blue Deck (+1 hand) once you unlock it
  2. First 3 rounds: Buy any usable Joker you see while holding the $25 savings line
  3. Settle on a strategy: Read what your Jokers boost — Flush boosts mean go Flush, Pair boosts mean go Pairs
  4. Rounds 4-6: Use Planet cards to level your main hand, and Tarot cards to edit and compress the deck
  5. Rounds 7-8: Hunt for ×Mult Jokers — they decide whether you survive the last two rounds
  6. Victory!

Common Mistakes#

# Mistake Correct Play
1 Leveling every hand evenly Level only 1-2 core hands — concentrated resources create real jumps
2 Never buying Planet cards Planet cards are the main source of hand levels — always buy the one for your main hand
3 Deck over 50 cards Compress with The Hanged Man and Death — keep 30-45 cards
4 Assuming rerolls cost a flat $5 Rerolls start at $5 and add $1 each — three rerolls cost $18
5 Ignoring Boss debuffs Check the Boss one round early — pivot strategies ahead when needed
6 Stacking +Mult while forgetting ×Mult Late game, ×Mult is the key to score explosions — balance the two
7 Always draining savings Interest is reliable passive income — holding $25 is the strongest early economy habit
