Emotes are one of Fortnite’s most iconic features. From the legendary “Take the L” to intricate dance moves and interactive emotes, the emote system adds personality and expression to the game. Fortnite categorizes emotes into several types. Each type has different functionality and uses. Dances are the most popular and visible, sprays are quick graffiti tags, emoticons appear as avatar icons, and contrails follow your glider in the sky. Jam tracks are musical items used in the Festival mode, while lobby tracks play in the main menu.

Emotes can be obtained through multiple channels. The Item Shop is the primary source, rotating daily with a selection of emotes. The Battle Pass includes several emotes per season — once the season ends, those emotes are gone forever. Some emotes are free through quest rewards, while others are exclusive to promotional events or bundles.

Fortnite emotes follow the same rarity color system as weapons and skins. The rarity affects both the visual effect and the market value. Lobby tracks do not expire once purchased.

To build a comprehensive collection, focus on Battle Pass emotes first — these are time-limited and will never return. Item Shop emotes rotate frequently and can be purchased anytime. Free emotes from quests and events should always be claimed.

While emotes are primarily cosmetic, they can have gameplay implications. Using emotes to bait enemies (making them think you’re distracted), to communicate with teammates (spraying directions), or to celebrate after a win are all valid uses. However, emoting during a fight is risky — you’re completely vulnerable during the animation.
