Boss Guide#

Overview#

Boss fights are the core challenge content in Zenless Zone Zero. Every boss has distinct attack patterns and mechanics that demand fluent dodging, assists, and damage rhythm. This page organizes verified information: universal attack/defense cues, the complete Notorious Hunt (weekly) rules, and the verified boss roster.

Per-boss move tables, phase HP, and numeric mechanics aren’t documented here — in-game practice and the official wiki are the authority.

Universal Attack/Defense Cues#

The flash before a boss attack is this game’s shared language:

  • Yellow flash: parryable. Swap characters to trigger an Assist attack — block the hit head-on, build heavy Daze, and briefly stagger the enemy to open a damage window. Assists consume Assist Points.
  • Red flash: unparryable. Evade with a Defensive Assist (swap-dodge) or a regular dodge; Defensive Assists cost no Assist Points.
  • No flash: ordinary attack — dodge on rhythm or tank through shields.

These three cues plus Assist Point management are boss-fight fundamentals; execution details on the Controls & Settings page.

The Notorious Hunt (Weekly) System#

The Notorious Hunt is the core farming mode for boss materials. Verified rules:

Rule Notes
Unlock Inter-Knot Level 30, plus the Chapter 2 interlude (talk to the NPC to start)
Free attempts 3 free challenges per week
Main output Core skill upgrade materials
Advanced option Spend 60 Battery Charge to enter the deep hunt variant for better rewards

Weekly counts are limited and the materials are mandatory for core skill upgrades, so spend all 3 free weekly attempts and plan which agents you’re raising in advance — don’t waste counts on materials for characters you aren’t building. The deep hunt trades Charge for higher yield; use it when a core material gap is big.

The Inter-Knot 30 gate deserves early attention: the level cap is 60, with promotion gates at 20/30/40/50 requiring their trials before further growth. If you’re stuck around 29, clear the current reputation tasks to push past 30 first, then come back to unlock the Hunt — faster than grinding the main line blind.

The deep hunt costs 60 Charge per run, and Charge is the universal daily resource: cap fixed at 240, 1 per 6 minutes natural regen; since 1.2, overflow time at full charge converts into Reserve Charge (cap 2400), and an Ether Battery restores 60 instantly in emergencies — exactly one deep hunt run. Scheduling weekly runs when Charge is about to overflow keeps the patrol and cleanup modes’ daily budgets intact.

The Notorious Hunt Boss Roster#

Verified via online sources (English names from game8.co and the official wiki):

Boss Added
Newborn Dead End Butcher Launch era
Nineveh Launch era
Corrupted Overlord - Pompey 1.2
Sacrifice - Bringer 1.4
Wandering Hunter 2.3
Ye Shiyuan the Thrall 2.5
Kusarikku 3.0

The roster keeps growing with versions. Boss names previously circulating on this site — “Titious,” “Hati,” “Moro” — were unverifiable and have all been deleted; the correct phrasing is “3 free Notorious Hunt challenges per week,” not “weekly boss ×3.”

The version timeline clarifies the expansion: Corrupted Overlord - Pompey joined with 1.2 (September 25, 2024), Sacrifice - Bringer with 1.4 (December 18, 2024), Wandering Hunter with 2.3 (October 15, 2025), Ye Shiyuan the Thrall with 2.5 (December 30, 2025), and Kusarikku with 3.0 (June 17, 2026). As of 3.2 (October 2026) the list stands at seven; additions don’t land every version — future entries follow official patch notes.

Known Boss Notes#

Dead End Butcher#

The Dead End Butcher is an early-game melee boss whose empowered form, the Newborn Dead End Butcher, sits on the Notorious Hunt roster. Counter-notes:

  • Melee combos dominate, with many yellow-flash openings — a great sparring partner for practicing Assists and building Daze.
  • Red-flash heavies must be dodged; eating them head-on costs dearly.
  • Bring a Stun specialist to fill the Daze bar faster and chain your combo attacks inside the Daze window.

Nineveh#

Nineveh is the other early Notorious Hunt entry. Watch its ranged attack forms — keep moving, clear interference targets first, and deal damage in safe windows. Specific move details follow the game.

Universal Boss Strategy#

  • Read the wind-up: every boss telegraphs attacks with distinct animations. Spend one rotation learning the moves, then optimize output.
  • Don’t get greedy: dodge when the cue says dodge — survival first. Time limits matter far less than the penalty of restarting.
  • Exploit Daze windows: fill the Daze bar, chain into Combo Attacks, and concentrate your main DPS’s damage inside the amplified window.
  • Complete roles: the Stun slot builds Daze, the damage slot bursts, support/defense keeps the rotation smooth. Team thinking on the Team Comps page.
  • Bangboo pick: auto-assists add buffs or healing in high-pressure fights — choose by your team’s weak side.

Pre-Fight Team Prep#

A checklist where every line maps to a verified system:

Prep Check
Full roles Stun (Daze builder) + damage + support/defense — no missing slot in the three
Core skill levels Notorious Hunt materials actually spent on your mains
Drive Disc main stats Main DPS’s disc mains correct (slot 1 HP, slot 2 ATK, slot 3 DEF)
Bangboo attached Bangboo matches the team’s identity; assist or attack lean by the weak slot
Assist reflexes Yellow = parry, red = dodge — instinct trained (see the Controls & Settings page)

Boss fights aren’t stat checkpoints: a team with complete roles and fluent cue-reading regularly beats higher-stat teams with broken structure. When underinvested, patch core skills and levels through the Hunt and Charge farming before retrying — faster than bashing your head against the wall.

Relations to Other Modes#

  • The Hunt yields core skill upgrade materials — a mandatory agent-development step; planning on the Agents page.
  • Drive Discs and gear materials come from the Charge-based patrol and cleanup modes, not the Hunt — see Endgame Content.
  • Challenge modes (Shiyu Defense, Deadly Assault, etc.) rotate their boss configurations periodically — rules on the Challenge Modes page.
  • The record shop (Bardic Needle) ties into tuning unlocks and the Hunt’s unlock prerequisites — follow that quest line as you progress so a level-30 account doesn’t sit missing its prerequisite.

FAQ#

Question Answer
How do I unlock Notorious Hunts? Inter-Knot Level 30 plus the Chapter 2 interlude (talk to the NPC)
How many runs per week? 3 free weekly challenges; 60 Battery Charge buys the deep hunt variant with better rewards
What does the Hunt drop? Core skill upgrade materials
How long does Daze last? Duration isn’t verified here — no numbers printed; the practical rule is queueing Combo Attacks the moment the bar fills
Do bosses have elemental weaknesses? Per-boss weaknesses and resistances aren’t in our verified scope — build for complete roles first, and read element matchups in practice
How much do parries cost? Assist attacks cost Assist Points; Defensive Assists don’t. Point caps and numbers follow the game — management principles on the Controls & Settings page
Can’t beat a boss? Check role completeness first (stun + damage + support/defense), then drill parry and perfect-dodge timing in the training room; if underinvested, farm the Hunt and Charge modes first
Is the deep hunt worth it? Yes when this week’s core-material gap is big — 60 Charge for higher yield; otherwise leave it to daily farming, no need to force it weekly
Not enough Charge for the weekly? Cap 240, 1 per 6 minutes, overflow banks as Reserve Charge (cap 2400); an Ether Battery restores 60 in emergencies — exactly one deep hunt run
