Campaign Walkthrough#
Valheim’s “main story” is a progression chain of 8 biomes and 8 bosses. This page lays out the complete route from spawn to endgame as of the 1.0 release (2026-09-09): what to do, whom to fight, and what to take at each stage. All offerings and drops follow the verified figures on the Bosses page.

Stage-by-Stage#
Stage 1: Meadows#
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Get established | Build a sheltered base with a workbench; secure “Sheltered” and “Rested” |
| Gather flint | Pick it up around the spawn area |
| Stabilize food | Berries, hunted deer and boar — keep all three slots full |
| Prepare the summon | Hunt deer for 2 Deer Trophies |
Boss fight: Eikthyr — flint weapons plus a bow are enough. Bow chip damage is safest; in melee, strike in the gaps between its attacks. It drops the Hard Antler; craft the antler pickaxe and this stage is done.
Stage 2: Black Forest#
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Find copper | Surface deposits across the Black Forest |
| Find tin | Tin deposits along the Black Forest coasts |
| Build the smelting line | Smelt copper and tin in the smelter; keep the charcoal kiln fed |
| Craft bronze | Copper + tin into bronze gear |
Boss fight: The Elder — summoned with 3 Ancient Seeds at the altar. It is weak to fire, so fire damage is the core of the fight; bring plenty of arrows, use the altar’s stones for cover, shoot from mid range, and move the moment a ground-root telegraph appears.
Stage 3: Swamp#
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Poison prep | Brew poison-resistance mead before going deep |
| Gather iron | Sunken ruins and crypts across the Swamp |
| Iron loadout | Iron weapons, shield, and armor |
| Prepare the summon | Collect 10 Withered Bones in the Swamp (in-game acquisition) |
Boss fight: Bonemass — weak to blunt, immune or highly resistant to pierce; bring iron blunt weapons. Poison mead is mandatory; fight on open, dry ground, dodge the poison AoE first, and clear its adds promptly. The Wishbone it drops changes exploration forever: wear it and underground silver and treasure announce themselves.
Stage 4: Mountains#
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Frost prep | Frost-resistance mead or cold-weather gear |
| Locate silver | Probe underground veins with the Wishbone |
| Silver loadout | Craft silver weapons and armor |
| Collect dragon eggs | Dragon Eggs are Moder’s offering |
Boss fight: Moder — summoned with 3 Dragon Eggs. She resists frost and is weak to pierce, so the bow is your main damage (frost and fire arrows both underperform). Use the mountain boulders to block her frost breath, and melee her during her landing windows. She drops the Dragon Tear, unlocking the Artisan Table — the key step into late-game crafting.
Stage 5: Plains#
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Black metal secured | Kill Fulings for black metal scrap |
| Farming established | Plant barley and flax (cloudberries are wild-pick only) |
| Black metal gear | Black metal weapons and armor completed |
| Totems collected | Assemble 5 Fuling Totems |
Boss fight: Yagluth — fire-resistance mead is mandatory and black metal gear is the baseline. The arena is open: keep moving and use the boulders to break his fire AoE. He drops the Yagluth trophy; offering it grants 50% lightning resistance, farming +25, and damage +10%.
Stage 6: Mistlands#
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Beat the mist | Light and navigation are the first problem |
| Gather carapace | Carapace and Yggdrasil wood feed the new gear tier |
| Turn to magic | The Eitr resource plus elemental and blood magic arrive here |
| Craft the key | The Sealbreaker assembles from fragments |
Boss fight: The Seeker Queen — summon with the Sealbreaker; repeat fights use 3 Seeker Soldier trophies. Magic gear shines in this fight, poison prep is essential, and splitting aggro in co-op makes it far safer. Offering the trophy grants Eitr regen +100%, sneaking without stamina, and 50% poison resistance.
Stage 7: Ashlands#
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Survive the volcano | Re-fit gear and resistances for the environment |
| Mine flametal | Flametal is this stage’s core metal |
| Upgrade building stock | Fireproof Grausten stone construction |
| Break fortresses | Siege engines plus weapon enchanting |
| Collect bell fragments | Found in the Charred Fortress; 3 fragments craft a Bell |
Boss fight: Fader — summoned by offering 3 Bells. He resists fire and is weak to frost, so keep flame damage off your bar. Offering him grants adrenaline +100%, stagger -50%, and 50% fire resistance — your prep for the endgame.
Stage 8: Deep North (Endgame)#
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Cross the ice | An endgame region 2.5× the size of any previous biome |
| Handle new enemies | Gammeltroll, Elakingar, Barka |
| Go underground | The Winding Tunnels and the Gates of Mörkhalla |
| Gather offerings | 3 Malicious Blood |
| Final battle | Summon Kall Fimbulbringer at the “strange bowl” altar |
Endgame fight: Kall Fimbulbringer — the game’s final challenge, three phases long, with phase two a gauntlet of every previous boss’s spirit. The 1.0 additions — Nordic weapons, three Deep North armor sets (light / heavy / mage), the backpack-extending pocket, and the latent forge system — all exist for this fight. Use the grappling hook and ice sliding actively in the arena. Defeat him and the cycle of sacrifice closes.
The Resource Chain#
| Stage material | Gear tier |
|---|---|
| Flint | Stone Age weapons |
| Copper, tin → bronze | Bronze Age |
| Iron | Iron Age |
| Silver | Silver Age |
| Black metal | Black metal era |
| Carapace / Eitr | Mistlands magic era |
| Flametal | Ashlands |
| Deep North materials | Endgame |
Metal transport note: portals default-ban ore and bars, so sea routes and relay bases must keep pace with progression (after the Ashlands update, stone portals may carry ore — see the Resources page).
Sailing Support#
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Ship choices | Raft → Karve → Longship → Drakkar |
| Wind mechanic | Speed follows wind and sail angle; tack in zigzags against the wind |
| Rough weather | Sailing risk rises; beach and wait when needed |
| Voyage checklist | Food, resistance meads, spare wood, repair materials, portal materials, and a bed (spawn point) |
Building Support#
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Structural stability | Structures have load and support propagation; color coding shows how secure each piece is |
| Progression notes | Ground foundations are sturdiest; wide spans need stronger support material |
| Material chain | Wood → core wood → stone → black metal → Grausten (Ashlands) |
Food Support#
Food’s job is to hold up your health and stamina caps: 3 slots, decaying over time, caps set by what you eat. At each stage simply fill all three with the best current options; exact values defer to the in-game panel (not individually verified here).
