Beginner’s Guide#

Valheim has no class selection and no stat allocation — you wake on the Meadows coastline in simple clothing, and every ability you gain comes from gathering, crafting, and combat. This page covers only verified opening mechanics and actionable advice, so your first night, first base, and first boss all land smoothly.

Starting the Game#

You wake on the Meadows coast, where the raven Hugin, Odin’s messenger, drops cryptic hints to point the way. The spawn area is the safest environment in the game and the only stage where nothing hunts you — treat it as a training ground and drill the basics until they are second nature.

Step 1: Gather Resources#

Goal Method
Collect wood Punch or tool trees down
Collect stone Pick up small stones off the ground
Collect flint The key early weapon material — first link of the material chain
Gather berries Pick berry bushes and combine with mushrooms
Build a workbench Crafted from wood; the gate to almost all crafting
Make stone tools With a workbench, craft the stone axe and other basics

The material chain runs “flint → copper/tin → iron → silver → black metal → carapace / Eitr → flametal → Deep North materials”. Gather plenty of flint at the start — flint weapons carry you smoothly into the Bronze Age.

Step 2: Build a Shelter#

Pick flat ground for your first base, ideally where coast meets forest — easy gathering and easy sailing.

The shelter triad:

  1. Enclosed space — walls, roof, and a door defining an interior area;
  2. Fire — a campfire or torch for light, warmth, and cooking;
  3. Workbench — inside the shelter, roofed against rain.

When the “Sheltered” status appears, the build qualifies. Under the “Rested” buff you gain skill experience at +50% and health and stamina regenerate faster — the single most valuable permanent state in the game.

Per-material lists and recipe numbers for each structure have not been individually verified by this site; the in-game crafting menu is authoritative.

The Food System#

Food is one of Valheim’s core survival mechanics. There is no hunger bar; instead: your character has 3 food slots, eaten food decays over time, and your health and stamina caps are set by the current food combination. On an empty stomach your caps are miserable — a full three slots is the price of admission to any real fight.

Scenario Combination logic
Everyday exploration All three slots filled, balanced health and stamina
Preparing for battle Health-weighted foods to raise your HP cap
Gathering and building Stamina-weighted foods to chop, mine, and travel longer

Cooking notes:

  • Raw meat must be cooked on a campfire or cooking station;
  • The cauldron produces more elaborate recipes;
  • The fermenter turns mead bases into finished meads — the source of resistance meads;
  • Farming (carrots, turnips, etc.) provides a stable food supply.

Exact per-food values (health, stamina, duration) are not individually verified here — check the in-game panel.

Workbench and Tech Progression#

Workbench Levels#

The workbench levels up by attaching upgrade pieces, which unlock more recipes. Verified upgrade piece names:

Piece English name
Chopping block chopping block
Tanning rack tanning rack
Adze adze
Tool shelf tool shelf

Materials for each piece are not individually verified here — the in-game display wins. The forge works the same way, gating higher-tier metal gear.

Tech Tree Overview#

Era Key materials Biome
Stone Age Wood, stone, flint Meadows
Bronze Age Copper, tin Black Forest
Iron Age Iron Swamp
Silver Age Silver Mountains
Black metal era Black metal Plains
Mistlands Carapace, Yggdrasil wood, Eitr Mistlands (elemental and blood magic introduced)
Ashlands Flametal Ashlands (enchanting and siege engines introduced)
Deep North Deep North materials Deep North (Nordic weapons and three new armor sets added in 1.0)

Basic Combat#

Blocking and parrying

  • Shield blocking is the most reliable early defense;
  • Blocking at the moment an attack lands triggers a parry and staggers the enemy;
  • Small shields can parry; tower shields cannot parry but block a wider arc (see the Combat page).

Weapon types

Type Strength Weakness
Sword Balanced speed and versatility Nothing outstanding
Axe Doubles as a woodcutter Slower swings
Club Wide swings, good vs groups Short reach
Spear Long reach, throwable Must retrieve after throwing
Bow Ranged damage from safety Consumes arrows

Positioning: keep moving — that is rule one. Roll to dodge heavy attacks and use elevation for sightline advantages. Against multiple enemies, pull them apart and kill in detail. Stamina fuels every action — attacking, blocking, rolling, and sprinting share one pool; always keep half a bar for emergencies.

Survival Tips#

Key Tips#

  1. Stay Rested — rest where there is fire and shelter to keep the “Rested” buff: +50% skill XP and faster recovery.
  2. Lay portals early — portals link your bases and resource nodes, but by default they refuse ore and metal bars; metals go by sea (see the Resources page).
  3. Mark the map as you go — pin every ore vein, boss altar, and trader location immediately, with distinct icons.
  4. Keep a spare gear set — before entering dangerous biomes, store a backup set of gear and food at base so corpse runs are not naked.
  5. Mind the weather — Wet slows stamina recovery, cold biomes need frost protection, and storms make sailing far riskier.

Tamable Animals#

Animal Notes
Boar The first tamable; lure into a pen and feed
Wolf Tamable and fight alongside you once loyal
Lox Plains giant; rideable after taming
Chicken Poultry for eggs and meat
Moose Tamable and rideable as of 1.0

Taming method: lure the animal into a pen, feed its preferred food, stay calm and quiet, and wait out the tame. Tamed animals become steady resource sources.

Death Mechanics#

  • Everything on your body drops at the death spot; run back as a corpse to retrieve it;
  • Each skill loses roughly 5% of its current-level progress;
  • The death point leaves a marker on the map — retrieve your gear as soon as possible.

Opening-Phase Checklist#

  1. Build a sheltered base with a workbench and secure the “Sheltered” and “Rested” states;
  2. Craft flint tools and leather armor;
  3. Keep all three food slots reliably full through hunting and gathering;
  4. Scout the surroundings and mark resource nodes and the boss altar;
  5. Defeat Eikthyr and craft the antler pickaxe from the Hard Antler;
  6. Enter the Black Forest for copper and tin, entering the Bronze Age;
  7. Set up a smelter and refining line to pave the way into the metal ages.

Early Taboos#

# Don’t Why Do instead
1 Run too far in one trip Corpse runs become epic treks Drop a portal and bed in every new area first
2 Wander outside after dark Night kills visibility and raises danger Return to shelter before sundown
3 Leave home hungry Food sets your health and stamina caps Eat a full 3 slots before every trip
4 Fight bosses undergeared Your gear and food cannot keep up Finish the current era’s equipment first
5 Fell big trees next to base Falling trunks crush structures Log away from buildings
6 Try ore through a portal Portals default-ban ore and bars Plan sea routes or manual hauls

Beginner FAQ#

Question Answer
Starting gear? A stone axe plus basic tools; prioritize flint for flint weapons
How small can a shelter be? A bed, a campfire, and a workbench suffice — smaller spaces hold the states more easily
What is the death penalty? All carried items drop on the spot for corpse retrieval; each skill loses about 5% of current-level progress
When should I relocate? When copper and tin run thin, build a second base at the Black Forest’s edge
How do I tame boars? Lure into a pen, feed mushrooms or berries, keep distance until the tame completes
First boat? The Raft handles coastal waters; graduate to better ships for open sea
How do I keep “Rested”? Shelter plus fire grants it; decorations and comfort items extend the timer (see the Builds page)
Where is copper? Surface-exposed deposits in the Black Forest, mined with a pickaxe (see the Walkthrough page)
How do I summon the first boss? Sacrifice 2 Deer Trophies at the altar — details on the Bosses page
