Challenges#
Persona 5 Royal is a purely single-player RPG with no versus mode or online dungeons, so every “challenge” is a long-term goal the player sets for themselves: unlock the true ending before the hard deadline, take down the best-hidden superbosses, fill the Persona Compendium, and finally collect every trophy. This page covers only the mechanical basis of each challenge — when to attempt it, what missing it costs, and why it’s worth doing; per-item data and complete lists live on their dedicated pages, and this page cross-links to them.
Overview of Challenge Directions#
| Challenge Direction | Core Mechanic | Hard Deadline? |
|---|---|---|
| Third semester and true ending | The date gate on Maruki’s Confidant | Yes, before November 17 |
| Hidden superbosses | The twin wardens’ battle, the Reaper, the final fight with Maruki | None for the Reaper or the twins |
| Persona Compendium | Negotiation registration and every fusion type | None; can carry across playthroughs |
| Social Stats and Confidants | Stat gates and slot consumption | Some Confidants are limited by story dates |
| Palace collection | Will Seeds and self-set no-alert goals | Follows story progress |
| Platinum trophy | Exams, Confidants, executions, superbosses, and more | Exams and date-based entries have deadlines |
These directions aren’t mutually exclusive, but the schedule conflicts are severe: the true ending route’s calendar is extremely tight, and trying to do everything in one playthrough spreads you dangerously thin. Read this page first, settle on your target combination, then move to the dedicated pages.
The Top-Priority Challenge: Advance Maruki’s Confidant Before November 17#
The third semester is Royal’s most important addition, and its unlock condition is the only irreversible date gate in the game:
- The sole condition for unlocking the third semester is Takuto Maruki’s Confidant (the Councilor) reaching Rank 9 before November 17. On November 18 the story automatically raises him to max and the third semester begins.
- Miss the date, and the main story concludes at the end of December in the structure of the original Persona 5 — no third semester, no Maruki Palace, no true ending, with no way to salvage the playthrough.
- Maruki’s Confidant unlocks automatically with the story on May 13 and needs no trigger from you, but every rank consumes calendar slots. From May onward, put it into a fixed weekly slot, ranked above most daily activities.
The names of Maruki’s per-rank abilities are officially published, so they are listed as-is: Detox X (ranks 1–2), Flow (rank 3), Mindfulness (rank 5), Flow Boost (ranks 6–7), Detox DX (ranks 8–9), and Wakefulness (rank 10). These abilities support the party’s recovery and endurance in battle; exact effects follow the in-game Confidant descriptions.
The roles of the other two Royal-new Confidants must be kept straight — this is the most common confusion on and off this site:
| Confidant | Relation to the True Ending | Key Dates and Gates |
|---|---|---|
| Goro Akechi (Justice) | Rank 8 is required to unlock the Royal Ending’s extra scenes | The Rank 3 event requires Knowledge 3 and Charm 3; the Rank 7 event requires Knowledge 4 |
| Kasumi Yoshizawa (Faith) | Not required for the true ending | Reach Rank 5 by December 22 or her Confidant cannot continue in January; missing it only means her Confidant can’t rise further this playthrough |
In other words: if Kasumi’s Confidant stalls, the only loss is her own story line; Akechi’s Rank 8 and Maruki’s Rank 9 are the hard gates that actually steer the endings. The two demand completely different strategies — the former can be pushed gradually on a normal schedule, while the latter must be planned backward from the deadline.
The Dates That Decide the Ending#
The formula for the true ending: refuse every deal and clear Maruki’s Palace before February 3. The game has five main endings — bad endings 1 through 3, the normal ending (the original game’s positive ending), and the true ending; the Royal Ending is an appended scene on top of the true ending, not an independent sixth ending.
| Date | Story Node | Mechanical Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| November 17 | Maruki Confidant deadline | Reach Rank 9 by this date and the third semester opens; miss it and the story concludes in the original structure |
| November 20 | Sae Niijima’s interrogation | Betraying your companions leads into bad ending 1 |
| December 24 | The “god of control”’s deal | Accepting the deal leads into bad ending 2 |
| January 9 | Maruki’s false reality | Choosing to stay in the ideal world leads into bad ending 3 |
| February 2 | Reaffirm your resolve | Maruki and Akechi appear, and the story enters the final battle phase |
| February 3 | Maruki Palace final deadline | Missing it counts as game over — time rewinds one week and the true ending is lost |
Maruki is the third semester’s final opponent, his Persona is Azathoth, and it awakens into Adam Kadmon (Adam Kadmon) in the final battle. The complete option-by-option guide to the final battle and ending branches is on the Endings Guide, scheduling for the Confidants is on the Confidants page, and day-by-day trip planning is on the Calendar page.
Hidden Superboss Trials#
The Twin Wardens’ Fusion Assignments and Battle#
The Velvet Room’s wardens Caroline and Justine issue a series of fusion assignments as a Confidant line, each demanding a specified Persona. The assignments are designed to force you through the whole fusion system: some Personas can only be produced via specific fusion routes, and some materials themselves require completing other assignments first. Once every assignment is done and you push into the endgame, the Velvet Room triggers a trial battle against both twins — a comprehensive exam of fusion planning, skill inheritance, and party building; take it on only after the party’s resistances are fully covered and recovery options are plentiful. Upon victory, the twins are restored to their original form, the warden Lavenza.
The assignment list and fusion routes are on the Personas page, and how to advance the Confidant is on the Confidants page.
The Reaper: the Superboss of Mementos’ Depths#
Stay too long in Mementos’ corridors and the Reaper appears. It is the superboss of Mementos’ deepest floors, and a head-on slugfest demands a well-trained party; but the rewards for beating it are equally rich — experience and money far beyond ordinary encounters, making it the ultimate grinding-challenge target. Beating the Reaper is also the judgment condition for one of the silver trophies on the Platinum route, so full-completion players cannot skip this fight. Grinding strategies and encounter mechanics are covered in detail on the Mementos page.
The Third Semester’s Final Battle#
The true ending route closes with the battle against Maruki, with a final deadline of February 3. Viewed as a challenge, three things matter: the battle has multiple phases, so stock recovery items for a war of attrition; the Adam Kadmon phase attacks very differently from the previous phase, so adjust resistance setups on the fly; and since missing the deadline rewinds time, double-check your save slot before the fight. Battle details are on the Endings Guide and the Palace Walkthrough.
100% Persona Compendium Completion#
The Compendium registers every Persona you have ever obtained, and filling it is the longest-horizon collection challenge in the game. Registration routes:
| Registration Route | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Negotiation | Hit an enemy’s weakness to trigger 1MORE, pick the dialogue option, and a successful persuasion wins that Persona and registers it |
| Two- and three-Persona fusion | The Velvet Room’s basic fusions; triple fusion can produce results binary fusion cannot reach directly |
| Special fusion | Fixed recipes using Treasure Demons and other special Personas as materials |
| Alarm fusion | Time-limited fusion during a Fusion Alarm; successful results come with greatly boosted stats |
| Online fusion | A Royal-new online feature that lets you borrow Personas from other players’ Compendiums as fusion material |
One decisive convenience mechanic: registered Personas can be bought back with money at any time, keeping the level and skills they had at registration. Combined with Skill Card inheritance, you can copy scarce skills onto new Personas and build strong ones cheaply. The Compendium has no date limits whatsoever — keep pushing it across playthroughs rather than cramming it into one run.
Maxed Social Stats and a Full Confidant Board#
The five Social Stats (Knowledge, Guts, Charm, Kindness, Proficiency) gate many Confidant events and serve as a judgment condition on the full-completion route. The routine sources for each:
| Stat | Main Sources |
|---|---|
| Knowledge | Class questions, library study, exam results |
| Guts | The Big Bang Burger challenge, horror movies |
| Charm | Soaking in the bath, vending machine drinks |
| Kindness | Feeding Morgana, tending the balcony plants |
| Proficiency | Crafting infiltration tools, baseball and darts minigames |
On Confidants, the game has 22 recruitable characters in total (including the two Royal additions, Maruki and Kasumi). The core mechanic: bring a Persona matching the target’s Arcana to the meeting and the bond gain per hangout is higher — the zero-cost way to speed up Confidant progression. Royal also converts Akechi from the original’s story-driven auto-ranks into a full Confidant requiring normal nurturing. A guide to all 22 Confidants is on the Confidants page.
Palace Collection and Self-Set No-Alert Challenges#
The official built-in Palace collection challenge is the Will Seeds: each Palace hides Will Seeds, and collecting them all yields a craftable Skill Accessory whose evolved form is granted after the Palace ruler’s battle — this is also the judgment condition for the “obtain a Skill Accessory from a Palace ruler” silver trophy on the Platinum route. Exact Will Seed locations are on the Palace Walkthrough.
For self-set challenges, popular community goals include no-alert infiltrations from start to finish and clearing the game without resting in Safe Rooms — self-imposed playstyle goals with no official judgment attached. Additionally, the new darts and billiards minigames in Kichijoji raise the effectiveness ranks of Baton Pass and Technical respectively, a hidden combat-oriented growth; how to play them is on the Minigames page, and the underlying combat systems are on the Combat System page.
Fusion Alarms and the Five Executions#
A Fusion Alarm is a time-limited state the Velvet Room enters at random: fusing during an alarm produces Personas with greatly boosted stats. Alarms vanish in a flash, so building the habit of “see the alarm, head straight to the room and fuse” is the efficiency key of long-term Persona building.
Royal’s execution system has five official forms, all tied to platform trophy judgments:
| Execution Type | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Guillotine | Two Personas merged into one, with skill inheritance |
| Group Guillotine | Batch fusion using several Personas as material |
| Gallows | Sacrifice material Personas to pour experience into a target |
| Electric Chair | Convert a Persona into random Skill Cards |
| Execution during an alarm | Perform any execution while in the Fusion Alarm state |
The first four are routine building tools; the fifth is only available during an alarm, and if you miss it you simply wait for the next one. Operating details for these mechanics are on the Personas page.
The Platinum Trophy and Full-Completion Route#
There are 53 platform trophies: 1 Platinum, 1 Gold, 7 Silver, 44 Bronze. The Platinum (The Phenomenal Phantom Thief) requires earning every other trophy. Note that Royal also has 52 in-game Awards, housed in the Thieves Den’s awards display — they are not platform trophies and don’t affect the Platinum; the complete lists for both systems are on the Achievements page.
The seven silver trophy judgments are:
| Silver Trophy Judgment | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Top exam scores | Both exams on January 11 and February 11 must be taken at the top of the school |
| All five Social Stats maxed | Every social stat raised to its cap |
| A romantic relationship | Establish a lover relationship with any Confidant target |
| A maxed Confidant | At least one Confidant reaches Rank 10 |
| Completely change Mementos’ cognition | The completion judgment tied to exploring Mementos |
| Skill Accessory | Collect a Palace’s Will Seeds and obtain the Skill Accessory from its ruler |
| Defeat the Reaper | Beat the Reaper in Mementos’ depths |
Top exam scores and a maxed Confidant are the two most schedule-squeezed silvers and the likeliest to slip: top scores require taking first place on both exams, so daily Knowledge building can never stall; for the maxed Confidant, pick a target with a loose schedule and rush it first.
There are 11 hidden trophies, all judged by story progress: the seven Palaces (Kamoshida, Madarame, Kaneshiro, Niijima, Kitagawa, Sakura, Shido) each carry a completion judgment, plus Mementos’ completion judgment (The Thorough Trickster), the all-Palaces judgment (Take Back the Future), and clearing the base game (The Path Chosen, the Gold trophy). Additionally, the “I am Thou…” trophy requires obtaining a Persona through negotiation rather than fusion — players who rely purely on fusion will miss it.
Time references: Platinum-level full completion runs about 100 to 120 hours; experiencing all five main endings takes about 90 to 150 hours. Also, the Xbox version has no Platinum — platform awards appear as achievements, with completion criteria identical to the PlayStation version.
Playthrough Planning Advice#
Cramming the true ending, every maxed Confidant, and full Compendium collection into one playthrough is brutally tight; most players do better with two rounds:
| Playthrough | Main Goals | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First | True ending and story-based trophies | Guard the two hard deadlines of November 17 and February 3, and pick up negotiation and execution judgments along the way |
| Second | Full Confidant board, Compendium collection, hidden superbosses | Use New Game Plus inheritance to free the schedule for long-term goals |
When a new playthrough opens after clearing, growth elements like Social Stats and Compendium registration carry over, while Confidant ranks and story progress must be redone — the exact carryover list is shown in game when you start a new playthrough. Bringing second-round Social Stat and Compendium advantages in, the twins’ trial, the Reaper, and the remaining trophies all finish noticeably faster.
Closing Thoughts#
The game’s challenge design has one clear through-line: date gates decide the ending, schedule management decides the ceiling of your growth, and the fusion system decides the ceiling of your combat power. Memorize the two dates of November 17 and February 3, and everything else is a long-term goal you can advance at your own pace — which is exactly where the fun of single-player challenges lives.
