Onimusha: Way of the Sword Guide#

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Capcom’s new sword-fighting action game and the first mainline Onimusha entry in roughly twenty years. It launched on September 4, 2026 — moved up about three weeks from the originally announced September 25 — on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows (Steam / Epic Games Store), and Nintendo Switch 2, and it sold more than 1 million copies across all platforms on day one. The protagonist this time is Miyamoto Musashi, one of the most famous swordsmen in Japanese history, and the stage is early-Edo Kyoto corroded by miasma.

This hub is the overview page for the game, compiling only what Capcom and major authoritative encyclopedias have confirmed. Anything the officials have not published — figures, rosters, and details included — is labeled as not covered rather than guessed at.

A note on the genre discrepancy: the official Chinese site labels the game as sword-fighting action, while Baidu Baike and the English wiki list it as action-adventure. The two descriptions come from authoritative sources and do not actually contradict each other — swordplay is the absolute core of the game, while it also carries the exploration and pacing structure of an action-adventure. This hub states both side by side.

The 14 supported languages are: Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Polish, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean.

Release Date Change: From September 25 to September 4#

The release date went through one official adjustment, and this timeline matters for purchase and pre-order questions:

Point in time Official action
Initial announcement Release date set for Friday, September 25, 2026; the official Traditional Chinese site displayed this date for a long time
Follow-up An official “release date change notice” moved the launch from September 25 up to September 4
After the change The early-purchase bonus windows shifted with it: until 23:59 CST on September 24, 2026 for the PS5 / Xbox Series X|S / Windows / Switch 2 versions, and until 07:59 CST on September 26, 2026 for the Steam / Epic versions
Heads-up Because of the Switch 2 date change, previously placed pre-orders for the Switch 2 download version were cancelled and must be re-ordered
Save data notice Capcom told players not to delete the demo itself or its save data, so the demo save bonus stays claimable

Series Position: The First Mainline Entry in About Twenty Years#

This is the first mainline Onimusha game since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006, and Baidu Baike counts it as the series’ fourth mainline entry. The previous mainline chapter is set in a far earlier era, and the new game does not continue its characters or plot threads: it moves the entire stage to early-Edo Kyoto and hands the lead role to the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi instead.

The Stage: Early-Edo Kyoto Warped by Miasma#

Element Detail
Era Early Edo period (1604)
Place Kyoto
Anomaly The city has been warped into uncanny, unnatural forms by miasma
Tone Dark fantasy, with stages steeped in an eerie atmosphere

The ancient capital of Kyoto no longer looks like itself: miasma has transformed it, and its many eerie, foreboding stages form the battleground for a desperate war against the Genma.

The Protagonist: Miyamoto Musashi#

Item Detail
Name Miyamoto Musashi
Identity A hot-blooded warrior who came to Kyoto to reach the pinnacle of the sword
Personality Scoffs at power that is borrowed from outside forces
Facial model The late film star Toshiro Mifune (the encyclopedia and the English wiki agree on this)
Chinese voice Cao Zhen
Japanese voice Yoshimasa Hosoya

Casting Musashi as the lead is the decision this game is most easily remembered by: a warrior whose goal is to perfect his swordsmanship, yet who sneers at power obtained through outside means, finds himself strapped into a gauntlet that carries Oni power whether he wants it or not. That contradiction runs through the entire story.

The Enemy: Genma from Another Realm#

The Genma are the demons and monsters that should be entrenched in the depths of hell, now manifesting in the miasma-heavy Kyoto and rampaging at will. Formidable foes with superb martial skill come at Musashi one after another. The game also features Genma invasion points called Rifts, which are key sites for hunting demons and absorbing souls.

Core Combat: Issen, Break Issen, and the Soul Cycle#

Capcom positions the game as pure sword-fighting action: attack and defend with Oni power, seize the fleeting opening for an Issen, and chase the sharpest possible feel in sword combat.

Mechanic How it works
Main weapon The katana — slash, parry, and deflect incoming projectiles
Guard stance Entering guard blocks attacks from all directions
Stamina drain Slashes and parries whittle down an enemy’s stamina
Break Issen The one-strike decapitation execution available once an enemy’s stamina is depleted (the official Chinese site renders the name as “Arm Awakening — Break Issen”)
Combat bonuses Chain executions after consecutive parries; trigger multi-hit attacks after consecutive dodges
Using the field For example, flipping a table over to serve as an improvised shield
Issen Striking the instant an opening appears — the series’ signature pinnacle sword mechanic

The Oni Gauntlet and Souls#

The Oni Gauntlet is a sentient gauntlet that consumes the souls of defeated enemies. Souls come in three types:

Soul Use
Yellow souls Restore the player’s health
Red souls Spent on purchasing upgrades
Blue souls Power the Oni Armaments — special weapons that deal heavy damage to enemies

Landing Oni Armament hits returns yellow souls, and once the gauntlet is equipped you can activate Oni Vision to reveal the positions of every Genma and enemy in the area. Using Break Issen on a boss does not end the fight instantly; instead it forces a choice between dealing massive damage and gaining more souls.

In interviews, the director said the team deliberately avoided today’s fashionable open worlds and Souls-like design, returning to linear levels and a tight, responsive melee system (as relayed in NTGame’s weekly report on media interviews). The game is broadly linear overall, but it includes open areas and side quests, and it is played from a third-person perspective.

The Team: Items With Two Conflicting Records#

Public sources disagree on some staff credits, and this hub takes no side:

  • Director: the English wiki records Satoru Nihei; Baidu Baike gives one Chinese rendering of the name and NTGame’s weekly report another. Because the two Chinese renderings differ, this hub uniformly writes “director: Nihei” without committing to specific characters.
  • Producer: Baidu Baike credits one producer, while the English wiki lists the producers as Akihito Kadowaki, Koichi Shibata, and Kosuke Tanaka. The two rosters do not match, so rather than picking one, this hub defers to whatever Capcom and the publisher officially announce.

Team facts with no conflict: Musashi’s Japanese voice is Yoshimasa Hosoya, the “Oni Beauty” is voiced in Japanese by Aya Endo, and Ono no Takamura is voiced in Japanese by Akihiko Ishizumi.

What This Hub Does Not Cover#

The following have not been announced by the officials or confirmed in verifiable sources, so this hub neither speculates about them nor lists them: specific damage and stamina values, the complete roster of Genma types, exact Oni Armament moves and values, upgrade prices, a full map and area list, side quest details, voice cast beyond those already verified, cumulative sales, per-platform graphics and performance differences, PC system requirements, and post-launch update or DLC plans. If the officials publish more, this hub will be updated promptly.

  • Nioh 2 — a Sengoku-era yokai-hunting action game built on fast, demanding melee combat
  • Sekiro — FromSoftware’s deflect-driven sword duel game, the closest feel to Issen timing
  • Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty — Team Ninja’s mythological action game centered on parries and aggressive pressure
  • Stellar Blade — a parry-and-dodge character action game with punishing, readable boss fights
  • Ghost of Tsushima — an open-world samurai adventure about a lone swordsman in war-torn Japan
