DOOM: The Dark Ages Guide#
DOOM: The Dark Ages is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda, and it is the earliest entry on the DOOM timeline — set in an ancient era long before DOOM (2016). The game runs on the newly upgraded id Tech 8 engine and carries the series’ signature fast-paced combat into a medieval dark-fantasy setting.
This guide covers the full campaign, a detailed breakdown of every weapon and the rune system, combat techniques, collectible locations, and achievement unlock conditions, so you can carve a path through the Dark Ages.

Combat System Deep Dive#
Shield Mechanics#
This is the first DOOM game to introduce a shield system, and it adds a new dimension to core combat:
- Basic block: hold the block button to absorb frontal attacks; each block drains the block gauge
- Perfect parry: blocking at the instant an enemy strikes deflects the attack and staggers the enemy
- Shield bash: attacking immediately after a block deals extra damage and knockback
- Rune upgrades: later on you can equip shield runes that unlock counterattacks and absorption effects
Glory Kill Upgrades#
- Glory Kills carry over the design of DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, with added variety in execution animations
- The animation changes with your weapon state; bare hands and the shield each have their own special animations
- The ratio of health orbs and ammo a Glory Kill drops scales with how badly you currently need them (smart drops)
The Rune System#
Runes are the core of character progression and come in three types:
| Rune type |
Example effects |
Recommended pairing |
| Combat runes |
Increase melee damage, extend the perfect-parry window |
Melee builds |
| Survival runes |
Faster health regeneration, larger block gauge |
New players / high difficulty |
| Exploration runes |
Reveal nearby collectibles, increase movement speed |
Collecting / speedruns |
Getting-Started Essentials#
- Learn the perfect parry: against elite demons it is the most effective counter available, and practicing the timing dramatically lowers the difficulty.
- Rotate your weapons: different demons are weak to specific weapons, so do not lean on a single gun — fire demons fear frost, and heavily armored demons fear explosive bolts.
- Explore every side path: most collectibles and rune shards sit off the main route, and chapters cannot be revisited once cleared.
- Manage your block gauge: it does not regenerate on its own — refill it through Glory Kills or by picking up specific items.
- Pick the right difficulty: FPS newcomers should start on “I Want to Tell a Story,” series veterans on “Bring It On,” and players who want a real challenge by mid-game on “Scoundrel.”

Boss Fight Essentials#
Shadow Lord (Chapter 2)#
- Weak points: the head and the glowing rune core on its back
- Attack patterns: shadow claw swipes (blockable), shadow waves (jump to avoid), and summoned lesser demons
- Recommended tactics: shoot the head rune with crossbow bolts to stun the boss, then circle behind and strike the back core
- Shield play: perfectly parry the claw swipe to put the boss into a brief stagger state
Siege Behemoth (Chapter 4)#
- Weak points: the leg joints and the gaps in its belly armor
- Attack patterns: massive hammer slams (area damage), charging rams, and thrown stones
- Recommended tactics: use the ballista emplacements in the arena to shoot the legs until the boss kneels, then attack the belly
- Watch out for: the charge has a clear wind-up animation — sidestep to dodge it
Chaos Lord (Final Boss)#
- Three phases, each with different attack patterns and weak-point positions
- Phase 1: the boss attacks from range with shadow magic; clear the summoned lesser demons first
- Phase 2: the boss switches to melee, using great axe sweeps and ground slams — parry, then counterattack
- Phase 3: the boss fuses all of its abilities and the arena shrinks, forcing you to fight in tight quarters

Story Impressions and Analysis#
DOOM: The Dark Ages takes the series’ story back to its oldest starting point, and the medieval setting is far more than a cosmetic reskin — id Software seeds the narrative with numerous threads that echo the mainline games. The Doom Slayer was already a figure demons feared in the ancient era, and this story explains why the Slayer was sealed away, his relationship with the Night Sentinels, and how the forces of Hell shaped the development of medieval human civilization.
For longtime fans, the lore scrolls scattered through the game reveal a great deal of new information about the Slayer’s origins, including the source of his power, the history of his armor, and his thousand-year entanglement with Hell.
