Full Chapter Walkthrough#
How to Read This Guide#
The DOOM: The Dark Ages campaign spans nine chapters, from the prologue “The Fall Begins” to the finale “The Dark Heart”. This guide follows chapter order and provides, for each one, a complete route, key fight locations, weapon unlock timing and collectible planning.
A few clarifications before you start:
- No chapter revisits: once a chapter is cleared you cannot return — missed collectibles wait for a new playthrough.
- Difficulty changes the fight: enemy HP, numbers and aggression vary sharply by difficulty. Combat advice here assumes “Come On” (the second difficulty). On higher settings, lean harder on shield blocks and Glory Kills.
- Collectible counts: totals are listed under each chapter heading; for exact locations see this site’s full collectibles page.
- Rune priority: the rune advice below prioritizes combat efficiency; adjust survival and exploration runes to taste.

Prologue — The Fall Begins (Collectibles: 3)#
The prologue is the campaign’s tutorial, roughly twenty minutes long. You wake at the edge of collapse, dragged back from the depths of hell into the human world. The pacing is deliberately slow; its purpose is teaching three basics — movement, flail attacks and Glory Kills.
Chapter Flow#
- Wake and flee: Follow the linear path; the first demon footsoldier ambush triggers along the way. Only the flail is available — practice linking light and heavy attacks.
- First Glory Kill: Stagger an enemy, approach, and press the prompt to execute. Glory Kills smart-drop health or ammo — when low, execute weakened enemies first to heal.
- Shield tutorial: Mid-chapter you receive the shield; the game walks you through basic blocks and shield bashes. Hold block to stop frontal attacks — the shield won’t shatter until its gauge empties.
- Escape the first hellhound: Hellhounds are fast with vicious lunges. Block the lunge and counter immediately, or open distance and answer with heavy attacks.
- The road to Dark Castle: The chapter ends with a zipline and jump platforms — time your jumps; falls cost a sliver of health.
Combat Notes#
- Glory Kills are the core resource loop; build the habit of executing anything staggered.
- The hellhound’s lunge telegraphs clearly — block the instant its hind legs flex to trigger a perfect block and interrupt.
- The prologue has no supply points; when health runs low, use braziers and oil barrels for explosive damage.
Collection Notes#
Only 3 collectibles, all on side paths off the main route — nearly impossible to miss. Equip the exploration rune here if unlocked, in preparation for later chapters.
| Collectible | Type | Location Hint |
|---|---|---|
| Legend Scroll | Legend Scroll | Behind the broken pillar left of the awakening point |
| Legend Scroll | Legend Scroll | Side cave before the first hellhound |
| Ancient Relic | Ancient Relic | Platform beside the zipline at chapter’s end |
Chapter 1 — Dark Castle (Collectibles: 8)#
Entering humanity’s border stronghold, this chapter transitions from hellish wasteland to medieval architecture. You gain the crossbow, dramatically boosting ranged suppression. This is the game’s first true full combat level, with enemy variety opening up.
Chapter Flow#
- Wall defense: The level opens on the ramparts against mixed demon footsoldiers and archer demons. Archer demons shoot from afar — pick them off with the crossbow first.
- Crossbow acquisition: Through the gate, the crossbow waits in the armory. High damage, headshot-capable — the best ranged answer to ordinary demons.
- Hall breakout: In the central hall enemies flood in from three directions. Circle the pillars for cover; before you have the flamethrower, don’t let fire trolls close the distance.
- Throne room duel: The chapter’s elite fight is the demon knight, who carries a shield that blocks frontal attacks — break it with a charged flail strike or flank from behind.
- Abyss passage: The escape runs through underground tunnels full of rockfall set pieces — keep moving.
Combat Notes#
- Crossbow headshots one-shot ordinary footsoldiers — the most ammo-efficient play this chapter.
- Archer demons’ arrows fly on visible arcs; sidestep them, no need to block.
- The demon knight’s shield is impenetrable from the front; use the flail’s charged heavy to break it.
Collection Notes#
The 8 collectibles start spreading out, some requiring detours. Before the hall fight, sweep the upper galleries first — you can’t come back after clearing.
Chapter 2 — Burning Plains (Collectibles: 10)#
The campaign’s first major turning point: the battlefield moves from castle to flame-scoured plains. This chapter grants the flamethrower and the first proper boss, the Shadow Lord. Fire trolls and flying demons appear in force, and the counter system comes into play.
Chapter Flow#
- Push across the plains: Cross the burning wilds and meet fire trolls. They resist fire damage — the flamethrower is nearly useless; answer with bolts or the flail.
- Flamethrower acquisition: At the collapsed altar mid-plains you get the flamethrower — exceptional against flying demons and skeleton-type enemies.
- Flying demon swarm: The aerial flock is the first hard fight. Sweep with the flamethrower or pick them off one by one with the crossbow; watch their dive trajectories.
- Altar puzzle: Mid-chapter, light three flame altars to unseal the gate. They form a triangle, with fire trolls respawning en route.
- Shadow Lord fight: The chapter ends in the boss arena — full strategy on this site’s boss page.
Combat Notes#
- Remember the counters: fire-types fear frost, heavy armor fears explosive bolts. No frost enchant yet this chapter, but bolts still handle fire trolls efficiently.
- Flamethrower fuel is limited — don’t waste it on trash mobs; save it for the flying swarm.
- Oil barrels dot the plains; ignite them for large area damage.
Collection Notes#
One of the 10 collectibles sits on a platform before the boss arena — grab it before dropping in. The Burning Plains are open but the side paths are legible; loop the perimeter before cutting through the middle and you’ll collect nearly everything.
Chapter 3 — Forgotten Crypt (Collectibles: 12)#
Into catacombs and crypt labyrinths, dark and oppressive, with skeleton warriors and shadow mages as the main enemies. The chapter’s biggest prize is the rune system unlock — collect rune shards to equip three rune slots.
Chapter Flow#
- Crypt entrance: Descend the spiral stair into skeleton swarms. Skeletons drop no health orbs when shattered — finish them with Glory Kills.
- Rune system unlock: Beat the gatekeeper elite to get the rune device; from then on you can open the menu and reconfigure runes anytime. Prioritize combat runes for melee damage.
- Shadow mage encounters: Shadow mages teleport and fire homing magic bolts on erratic trajectories — break their casts with fast shots.
- Underground river and drawbridge: Mid-chapter you cross an underground river with drawbridge mechanisms choreographed against enemy waves — falling costs health.
- Crypt king guard fight: The chapter’s end brings an empowered skeleton chieftain swinging a giant hammer — perfect blocks yield huge punish windows.
Combat Notes#
- Shadow mages are this chapter’s top kill priority — their homing bolts drain your block gauge fast.
- When skeletons crowd, flamethrower the floor clear, then Glory Kill stragglers for resources.
- After the rune unlock, check combat rune effects regularly — the flail’s charged heavy scales significantly.
Collection Notes#
The Forgotten Crypt is among the densest collectible chapters in the game, with 12 spread across multi-tier crypt levels. Strongly consider the exploration rune — it displays nearby collectibles on the map and cuts missed pickups dramatically.
Chapter 4 — Iron Fortress (Collectibles: 10)#
The mid-campaign climax: assault the demon-held fortress. This chapter grants the melee powerhouse great axe, plus the boss Siege Behemoth. Armored demons inside shrug off conventional bullets — explosive bolts and the axe are your main damage tools.
Chapter Flow#
- Outer walls: The siege opens with ballista platforms outside the fortress — clear archer demons off the ramparts to open a path for the assault.
- Great axe acquisition: Inside the armory you get the axe — huge sweep area, high damage, the best siege-breaker when surrounded.
- Armored demon legions: Fortress interiors crawl with armored demons immune to frontal gunfire — break armor with explosive bolts or flank for axe heavies.
- Core conduit: Through steam pipes and gear rooms, with more interactive hazards — don’t get crushed by the gears.
- Siege Behemoth fight: The chapter ends against the giant boss — details on the boss page.
Combat Notes#
- Armored demons’ frontal carapace ignores normal gunfire; explosive bolts are the fastest armor break.
- The axe’s charged heavy has a lunge — dodge, then counter with it.
- Small drawbridges and turrets inside the fortress are tactical pivots; scene weapons save significant ammo.
Collection Notes#
Fortress collectibles mostly sit on observation platforms at floor edges — explore carefully. A Legend Scroll waits on the plaza before the Siege Behemoth; don’t sprint into the boss arena.
Chapter 5 — Plague Forest (Collectibles: 14)#
The second half begins in a plague-twisted forest. This chapter grants toxin grenades; toxin-fog demons and dryads are the main enemies. Visibility is poor, and managing resources inside fog zones becomes the new challenge.
Chapter Flow#
- Disease border: At the forest edge the air carries toxin fog — entering it drains health steadily; plan your movement lines.
- Toxin grenade acquisition: In the abandoned hunter’s cabin you get toxin grenades, which leave persistent toxin fields — superb for steering enemy movement.
- Dryad ambushes: Dryads erupt from underground; the moment you hear soil bulging, back off. They’re tanky and armored — toxin grenades plus explosive bolts work best.
- Toxic marsh: Mid-chapter, cross a vast poison marsh on floating stones that sink periodically — rhythm matters.
- Altar purification: The chapter ends with three plague altars to cleanse, each heavily guarded; empowered dryads arrive in the final wave.
Combat Notes#
- Toxin fog interrupts health regen; lean on Glory Kill health orbs to hold your line.
- Dryads telegraph with clear soil bulges — dodge back the moment you see them.
- Throwing toxin grenades on chokepoints pre-drains enemy health.
Collection Notes#
The 14 collectibles here are extremely scattered, some buried deep in fog. Before entering any fog zone, confirm your target’s bearing first — getting lost inside costs health. This is the exploration rune’s peak chapter.
Chapter 6 — Dragonbone Mountains (Collectibles: 14)#
The late campaign opens across snowbound peaks roamed by frost dragons and mountain giants. This chapter grants the frost enchant, completing the counter system with an answer to fire-type enemies.
Chapter Flow#
- Snow trek: Along the ridgeline you meet the first frost dragon. Its frost breath slows — roll sideways out of range the instant you’re hit.
- Frost enchant acquisition: At the mountain shrine you get the frost enchant, adding frost damage to weapons — devastating against fire trolls and fire-type enemies.
- Mountain giant encounters: Giants swing stone pillars — long wind-up, brutal damage. Perfect block staggers them.
- Ice bridge mechanism: Mid-chapter, freeze waterfalls with the frost enchant to forge paths — the chapter’s core puzzle.
- Dragon nest outpost: The chapter’s last stand is an outpost defense against wave after wave of frost dragons and empowered demons — positional combat skills tested.
Combat Notes#
- With the frost enchant active, normal attacks slow on hit — a real limiter on mobile enemies.
- Frost dragons are vulnerable while landed: crossbow headshots or axe heavies both work.
- Ice patches alter movement feel — adjust positioning in fights.
Collection Notes#
Mountain collectibles hide in ice caves and cliff-layer pockets across highly vertical terrain. Sweep in zig-zag layers with the exploration rune and all 14 are reachable.
Chapter 7 — Abyss Gate (Collectibles: 16)#
The most collectible-dense chapter and the key pre-battle checkpoint. Every enemy here is an empowered version, combat intensity maxed across the board, and the final weapon arrives to ready you for the decisive fight.
Chapter Flow#
- Abyss entrance: Into the dark abyss, where empowered footsoldiers and empowered archer demons form outpost lines with fierce frontal pressure.
- Final weapon acquisition: At the abyss altar you receive the final weapon — enormous power, restricted ammo; save it for elites and bosses.
- Abyss gauntlet: Wave after wave of high-intensity encounters with near-full enemy rosters — shield blocks and weapon rotation are both mandatory.
- Rune enhancement altar: Mid-chapter, an altar upgrades equipped runes further — spend your shard stockpile before the finale.
- Abyss gate: The chapter ends opening the great door to the Dark Heart — the final arena awaits.
Combat Notes#
- Empowered enemies’ HP and damage spike across the board; block-gauge management matters more than damage.
- Save the final weapon for bosses; rotate conventional weapons for mob fights.
- Multiple supply points dot the chapter — confirm full ammo before each one.
Collection Notes#
The 16 collectibles are the game’s highest count, some guarded by elites at dead-end abyss forks — combat and collection weigh equally. Equip dual combat/exploration runes and gather as you fight.
Finale — The Dark Heart (Collectibles: 8)#
The final battle chapter: strike into hell’s core against the Lord of Chaos. The whole chapter is one continuous boss fight with transitional combat; all 8 collectibles sit in the last corridor before the duel.
Chapter Flow#
- Road to hell’s core: Through hell’s forge you meet the last mob line — the Lord of Chaos’s final servants, numerous but slightly weaker than chapter 7’s empowered versions.
- Final resupply: The last supply point before the duel — max all weapon ammo and set your ideal rune loadout.
- Collectible sweep: 8 collectibles fill the side paths of the final corridor — the last chance in the game. Take every one before entering the boss room.
- Lord of Chaos fight: A three-phase final boss with no recovery points between phases — full-run resource management tested.
- Ending cinematic: Beating the Lord of Chaos rolls a long finale; clearing unlocks New Game Plus and higher difficulties.
Combat Notes#
- The three phases test blocking, dodging and melee output in turn — switch weapons decisively.
- Before the duel, confirm all Glory Kill and block-gauge runes are equipped.
- The Lord of Chaos staggers briefly at phase transitions — your resource top-up window.
Collection Notes#
All 8 finale collectibles sit in clear side paths along the main corridor; loop both wings before entering the boss arena and you’ll collect every one. The easiest chapter to complete — don’t let them become regrets.
Difficulty Selection Advice#
The game offers five difficulty tiers; recommended picks by player type:
| Tier | Name | For Whom | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | I Want to Tell a Story | FPS newcomers, story fans | Low enemy HP, low pressure |
| Second | Come On | Average series players | This guide’s baseline |
| Third | Villain | Some FPS experience | Challenging mid-to-late |
| Fourth | Nightmare Herald | Hardcore players | Extremely aggressive enemies |
| Fifth | Nightmare | Series veterans | Required for the “Nightmare’s End” achievement |
New Game Plus#
Clearing the game unlocks NG Plus, carrying over runes and weapon upgrades. For the “Three-Hour Clear” achievement, sprint a second run on inherited power; the “Unbroken” achievement is also best attempted on low difficulty.
Core Takeaways#
A few principles that carry the whole campaign:
- Glory Kills are the lifeline: smart-dropped health and ammo make execute-on-stagger the most efficient resource loop.
- Counter-based weapon rotation first: fire-types fear frost, heavy armor fears explosive bolts — switching by counter saves enormous ammo.
- Master perfect blocking: against elites and bosses, the stagger window after a perfect block is your main damage opening.
- Exploration rune for collectibles: no chapter revisits — first-run completion depends on the rune’s locator.
- Block-gauge management throughout: the gauge never auto-restores; don’t drain it on trash mobs — save it for the boss phase.
