Walkthrough#

“Progression” in Mortal Kombat 1 is not a linear level path but several parallel play lines: story mode, Invasions seasons, online matches and training. This page gives a recommended order with verified checkpoints for each step. A chapter-by-chapter campaign flow is not covered (see the note on the Story Mode page); this page focuses on “what order to play in and which metrics to watch at each step”.

Route Overview#

Stage Main mode Stage goal Verified mechanics it rests on
Step 1 Story mode Learn Liu Kang’s new timeline and the tournament arc Cinematic storytelling, the Outworld tournament, the Titan Shang Tsung alliance
Step 2 Edition and platform check Confirm which edition and platform to buy Standard $69.99 / Premium $109.99; the Switch port drew negative reviews
Step 3 Core mechanics drills Turn defense and burst rules into muscle memory Standing/crouching guard, Flawless Block 2 frames, Fatal Blow 30% line
Step 4 Invasions season Claim seasonal rewards, test builds Themed seasons rotating roughly every six weeks
Step 5 Online matches Validate your skills Rollback netcode, cross-play

The logic behind this route: story mode is a low-pressure practice ground (the campaign uses the same combat system as versus play), mechanics practice sets the ceiling for everything after, and Invasions carries a six-week calendar constraint so it is slotted ahead of fully parallel competitive play.

Step 1: Story Mode#

Story mode is the entry point to the game’s setting: a cinematic narrative in which Liu Kang gathers fighters for the latest Mortal Kombat tournament in Outworld, against the alliance assembled by Titan Shang Tsung.

  • What to watch: classic characters’ new identities in the new timeline — this is the series’ third reboot, and relationships differ from the old one;
  • What you play: the campaign uses the same combat system as versus play (main fighter + Kameo), making it a low-pressure way to learn the controls;
  • What you choose: after defeating Shang Tsung the story offers two endings, “Revenge” and “Kingdom”; branch details defer to the in-game cinematics.

Step 2: Edition and Platform Check#

Decision Verified facts
Standard Edition ($69.99) Base game; no Kombat Pack or early access
Premium Edition ($109.99) Base game + early access (Sept 14) + Kombat Pack + 1250 Dragon Krystals
Pre-order bonus Playable fighter Shang Tsung
Platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam/Epic) are the critically favored main versions; the Switch port drew negative reviews over visuals, loading, performance and bugs
Kombat Pack The Jean-Claude Van Damme Johnny Cage skin, fighters Quan Chi / Ermac / Takeda / Peacemaker / Omni-Man / Homelander, and Kameo fighters Ferra / Johnny Cage / Khameleon / Mavado / Tremor

Step 3: Core Mechanics Drills#

Before entering long-form content and versus play, verify each of these verified mechanics yourself:

  1. Defensive stances: standing guard fails against lows, crouching guard fails against overheads, and throws plus unblockables beat both;
  2. Chip damage: nearly every blocked attack chips at least 3 points (0.3%) — static blocking is slow bleed;
  3. Flawless Block: press block within 2 frames before contact to erase all chip damage, usable at any point in a combo; certain moves take an extra -10 on frame advantage when Flawless Blocked;
  4. Fatal Blow: unlocks at 30% health or below, up to 35 damage, only one per match after connecting, and a blocked one must recharge;
  5. HP groupings: most fighters at 1000 HP, with exceptions at 1100 (General Shao, Havik, Conan) / 950 (Geras, Johnny Cage, Sindel, T-1000) / 900 (Nitara, Quan Chi); Kameo modifiers ±50/±100, team HP ranging 850–1200.

These five cover the core rules layer of versus play, all from verified sources (SuperCombo Wiki, CharlieINTEL), and every one can be tested directly in training mode.

Step 4: Invasions Seasons#

Invasions is the long-form single-player content after the credits: travel an interactive board across realms, try different builds, complete challenges for rewards, with seasons rotating roughly every six weeks.

  • Time management first: the season rotation means seasonal content has a window; planning your route matters more than grinding;
  • Build experiments: use the Step 3 HP-grouping knowledge to field different main fighter + Kameo pairs against different realms;
  • Specific rewards: seasonal themes and reward lists are not covered here; defer to in-game season announcements (see the Invasions Mode page).

Step 5: Online Matches#

  • Network: rollback netcode; prefer wired connections;
  • Cross-play: a series first; the Switch version only joined cross-play on February 27, 2024;
  • Player count: the Xbox store lists 2–8 online players;
  • Ranks: the ranking system and points formula are not covered — don’t trust any “hidden rating algorithm” posts; defer to the in-game ranked interface (see the Online Play page).

Milestone Checklist#

Milestone Pass criterion Next step
Mechanics verified All 5 Step 3 rules tested by hand Enter Invasions or online
Stable defense Automatically pick the right stance against lows/overheads Drill Flawless Block timing
Flawless Block online Land chip-free blocks mid-combo Take it into real matches
Fatal Blow planning Read the 30% line and plan your window Sharpen endgame play
Build literacy State your main fighter + Kameo team HP from memory Make targeted pairings

Time Allocation Advice#

Goal Invest in Why
Story experience Story mode in one pass Cinematic narrative deserves a continuous run
Collecting Invasions current season first Six-week windows are unforgiving
Competitive Training mode + online Mechanics fluency sets your match ceiling
Everything Alternate story → drills → season → online Season windows are a hard constraint

The basis for this split: the only calendar-bound line in this game’s single-player offering is Invasions (roughly six weeks a season); story mode and mechanics practice have no time limit and can fill the gaps between seasons.

Another way to view the split is “returns now versus later”:

Investment Returns now Returns later
Story mode Narrative, knowledge of two endings Mechanics fluency and lore understanding
Mechanics drills Defense/burst precision The long-term ceiling for online play and every challenge
Invasions season Current-season rewards None (progress rotates with the seasons)
Online matches Match experience Compounding rank and competitive skill

Not Covered Notes#

The following are not fully covered by official or verifiable sources, and this site does not speculate:

  • Chapter-by-chapter campaign flow and level names;
  • Complete reward lists for each mode;
  • The specific rules of Towers mode (see the Towers Mode page);
  • Ranking and matchmaking algorithms.
