Basic Combat Tutorial#
Step 1: Master the Attack Rhythm#
Combat moves fast on Normal difficulty. Lock onto a target first, then alternate normal attacks and dodges to build ATB. Don’t get greedy — constant movement is the key.
Step 2: Learn to Guard and Dodge#
Guarding greatly reduces damage but drains your guard gauge — when it breaks, you get staggered. Dodging opens distance quickly but does not fully negate damage. Combining the two works best.
Step 5: Master Character Switching#
Difficulty Selection#
| Difficulty | Notes | Suggested for |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | Higher damage dealt, less damage taken — for story-first players | First-time action RPG players |
| Normal | Standard balance — the recommended difficulty | Recommended for a first playthrough |
| Hard | Unlocked after clearing the game — tougher enemies, restricted items | Veteran players |
Resource Management Basics#
Gil Spending Advice#
Gil is scarce early on. Prioritize buying potions, antidotes, and basic materia. Don’t sink large amounts of Gil into expensive gear early — better equipment comes naturally in the mid-game.
Materia Leveling Advice#
Materia levels up by accumulating AP through use. Give every character at least 1-2 materia you intend to grow. Healing and attack magic materia should be leveled first.
Gear Upgrade Strategy#
Don’t over-invest in reinforcing your current gear. Weapons and armor refresh naturally as the story advances — reinforce only ahead of a difficult fight.
Common Beginner Questions#
Q: When do all characters unlock?
A: Cloud, Barret, and Tifa are available early on; the rest join progressively as the story advances.
Q: Should I focus on one character or level them evenly?
A: Level them evenly — battles require frequent character switching. Every character should have basic gear and materia.
Q: Do side quests disappear?
A: Some side quests have trigger conditions and time limits — miss them and they may be gone. Complete the side quests in your current region promptly.

Q: What is the penalty for dying?
A: Death costs no items or Gil — you restart from the last save point. Items can be used to revive on the spot.
Early Opening Route#
Recommended Order for Chapters 1-3#
Push the main story first until free exploration unlocks, then return to your current region to clear side quests and hunt objectives before advancing the plot. Side quests provide plenty of experience and materials — the most important early source of growth.
Early Resource Allocation#
| Resource | Recommended use |
|---|---|
| Gil | Potions and armor first |
| Materials | Save for key main-story weapons |
| AP | Concentrate on one or two core materia |
Early Pitfall Reminders#
Don’t pour all materials into early weapons. Weapons from the first few chapters are replaced quickly — reinforce them to tier two at most and save high-grade materials for late-game weapons.
