Multiclass System Overview#

Core Multiclass Rules#

Rule Explanation Notes
Ability threshold Multiclassing into a new class needs that class’s main ability score ≥ 13 This is the biggest limit — if your scores are too low you cannot multiclass
Spell slot calculation Full caster levels stack (Wizard / Sorcerer / Warlock / Cleric / Druid / Bard) / Full caster levels stack for spell slots At level 12 a full caster has 6th-level spell slots
Extra Attack does not stack Extra Attack from different classes does not stack — only the fighter’s level 11 triple attack is an exception Fighter 5 + Paladin 5 = 2 attacks (not 4) / Ftr5+Pal5 = 2 attacks (not 4)
Feat acquisition One feat every 4 total levels — not class levels Multiclassed characters still get feats normally
Proficiencies You gain a class’s full proficiencies at level 1 — multiclassing grants only part of them Watch out for armour proficiency — multiclassing from a non-heavy class will not let you wear heavy armour

S-Tier Multiclass Combinations#

1. Hexadin#

Level Class Unlocks Notes
1-2 Paladin Divine Smite, Fighting Style, Lay on Hands Core damage source
3-7 Warlock Pact Blade (Charisma attacks), Eldritch Blast, 2nd-level spell slots (recover on short rest) Charisma = attack + damage + dialogue

Ability spread: Charisma 17 → Constitution 16 → Strength 15 → Dexterity 12 → Wisdom 10 → Intelligence 8

The best support build — it uses the wizard’s Haste together with the fighter’s Action Surge to cast Haste twice in one round, doubling the whole party’s damage output.

Full caster class levels (Wizard / Sorcerer / Warlock / Cleric / Druid / Bard) stack — check the table below for your total spell slots.

Total Full Caster Level 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th
1 2 — — — — —
3 4 2 — — — —
5 4 3 2 — — —
7 4 3 3 1 — —
9 4 3 3 3 1 —
11 4 3 3 3 2 1

Note: warlock spell slots are calculated separately — they recover on a short rest but cap out at 5th level.

Multiclass FAQ#

Question Answer
Should beginners multiclass? Not recommended — a pure class taken to level 12 is strong too — learn the game first, then try multiclassing
When should you start multiclassing? Usually after you pick up the key ability — for example Fighter 5 (Extra Attack) or Paladin 2 (Divine Smite)
How many classes can you multiclass? Usually two — three spreads you too thin — you will not have the levels for the core abilities
How are spell slots calculated? Full caster levels stack — but the warlock is calculated separately
What do you give up by multiclassing? The high-level abilities of a pure class — such as the Fighter 11 triple attack or the Wizard 10 Spell Mastery
Build Level Split Advantage Risk Assessment
Hexadin Pal 2 / Lock 5 / Fighter 5 The most stable burst — high margin for error — unbeatable in dialogue Low risk
Gloom Assassin Ranger 5 / Assassin 4 / Fighter 3 First-strike kills — fewer combat rounds — lower risk Medium risk — requires stealth play
Sword Bard Fighter Bard 10 / Fighter 2
Life Cleric Fighter Cleric 10 / Fighter 2 Steady healing + Action Surge — effectively immortal Very low risk — but low damage

Level Milestones for Each Setup#

Build Level 1 Level 3 Level 5 Level 8 Level 12
Hexadin Paladin Paladin 2 (Divine Smite) Warlock 3 (Pact Blade) Warlock 5 + Fighter 1 Pal 2 / Lock 5 / Fighter 5 complete
Gloom Assassin Ranger Ranger 3 (Gloom Stalker) Ranger 5 (Extra Attack) Rogue 3 (Assassin) Ranger 5 / Assassin 4 / Fighter 3 complete
Sword Bard Fighter Bard Bard 3 (College of Swords) Bard 5 (3rd-level spells) Bard 8 (Extra Attack) Bard 10 + Fighter 2 complete

Multiclass Gear Priority#

Priority Gear Type Notes Examples
S Main ability score gear Multiclass builds are short on ability points — gear fills the gap Gauntlets of Strength, ability score belts
S Crit threshold reduction gear
A AC boosting gear Multiclassed characters usually have low AC — gear has to make up for it Elven Chain (+1 AC)
A Action / reaction gear Extra actions = more damage — actions are what multiclass builds lack most Duelist’s Prerogative (extra reaction)
