Builds Guide#

Building a character in Wo Long revolves around a triangle: main weapon + main virtue (the Five Virtues) + Divine Beast. There is no single strongest setup — only the setup that fits you. The key is to identify your combat style first, then allocate stats and gear toward it.

The Stat System#

Wo Long has five virtue stats: Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, and Earth. Each shapes a different aspect of combat:

Stat Effect Best Weapons Divine Beast
Fire Attack power Glaive, Dual Swords, Fists Vermilion Bird
Water Deflect window Straight Sword, Dual Swords, Curved Sword Black Tortoise
Wood HP Staff, Straight Sword Azure Dragon
Metal Spirit damage Curved Sword, Fists White Tiger
Earth Defense + equipment load Great Axe, Hammer, Glaive Yinglong

Weapon Recommendations#

Weapon Recommended Stats Traits
Straight Sword Water/Wood The balanced pick — fast swings, low Spirit cost
Glaive Fire/Earth Wide sweeping arcs + high Spirit damage — made for pressure play
Dual Swords Fire/Water King of attack speed — rapid combos but short reach
Staff Wood/Earth Mid-range + chargeable — safe damage
Great Axe Earth/Metal Slowest but highest damage and Spirit damage — one-swing-per-life play
Fists Metal/Fire Richest combo strings — high skill ceiling
Curved Sword Metal/Water Bleed + poison — the damage-over-time route
Hammer Earth Blunt impact — high Spirit damage and easy staggers

1. Fire Virtue Burst#

Setup Recommendation
Main stat Fire 99
Secondary stat Earth 20+ (to meet heavy armor load)
Weapon Glaive
Divine Beast Vermilion Bird
Combat style Maximum damage — fire imbue plus Divine Beast skill bursts. For players fluent in deflecting

Core idea: Fire raises attack power. Stack Fire to 99 with the Vermilion Bird, apply a fire imbue (via talisman or wizardry), and one full combo erases most elites.

How it plays: open with fire imbue → close in with a light-attack string into heavies → break the enemy’s Spirit bar → Spirit attack finisher → repeat the loop. Drop the Vermilion Bird skill while the boss is knocked down to maximize damage. Why 20 Earth: it satisfies heavy-armor load requirements — otherwise your dodge roll slows down.

2. Water Virtue Deflect#

Setup Recommendation
Main stat Water 99
Secondary stat Wood 20+ (for HP)
Weapon Dual Swords
Divine Beast Black Tortoise
Combat style Defensive counter-punching — maximized deflect window plus ice control. Best pick for newcomers

Core idea: Water widens the deflect judgment window. Paired with the Black Tortoise’s ice element, a successful deflect freezes the enemy and buys you safe damage time.

How it plays: bait the enemy attack → deflect (B/○) → enemy stagger (frozen) → Dual Swords light combo → Spirit attack → disengage → wait for the next attack to loop. The essence of the Water build is a three-beat cycle — deflect, freeze, punish. Deflection decides survival, freezing decides control, and your punish window decides how fast things die.

3. Earth Virtue Heavy Armor#

Setup Recommendation
Main stat Earth 80+
Secondary stat Metal 20+
Weapon Great Axe or Hammer
Divine Beast Yinglong
Combat style Tank — heavy armor, high defense, high Spirit damage weapons; trade hits with bosses on purpose

How it plays: this build has the highest margin for error in the game — in the heaviest armor, even a boss hit barely registers. Charged Great Axe attacks (hold the button) deal massive Spirit damage: two to three swings empty a boss’s Spirit bar. The moment it’s empty, land the Spirit attack for a knockdown, then loop back to charging.

4. Metal Virtue Poison#

Setup Recommendation
Main stat Metal 80+
Secondary stat Water 20+
Weapon Curved Sword
Divine Beast White Tiger
Combat style Poison + bleed damage over time — attrition warfare. For players who like to kite

How it plays: stack poison and bleed, then keep your distance while the ticks do the work. Metal also boosts Spirit damage, so every closing window you take ends in a Spirit punish before you retreat and let the DOTs run.

Divine Beast Selection#

Divine Beast Element Effect Best For
Vermilion Bird Fire Attack boost + fire imbue Fire burst builds
Black Tortoise Water Deflect window boost + ice element Water deflect builds
Azure Dragon Wood HP recovery + lightning element Survival builds
White Tiger Metal Spirit damage boost + poison Technical builds
Yinglong Earth Defense boost + damage reduction Tank builds

Gear Crafting and Enhancement#

Action Notes
Upgrade weapons Use the blacksmith at Battle Flags — costs Iron materials. +9 is the cap for most gear
Socket gems Weapons/armor have empty slots — socket virtue gems to add elemental damage or resistance
Gear sets Wearing multiple pieces of the same set triggers set bonuses — start collecting in the late game
Prioritize weapons Attack power matters most — feed materials to weapons first, patch armor later

Upgrade pacing: upgrade your weapon at least once per mission. Short on materials? Re-run cleared missions. Materials are plentiful before +3 and start getting scarce after +6. Lock in two or three favorite weapons and concentrate your investment — don’t spread it thin.
