Sekiro Beginner Guide#
Sekiro’s combat system is nothing like the Souls series — give up rolling and embrace the Deflect. This chapter covers all the core mechanics.
Core Controls#
| Action | PS | PC | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack | R1 | Left Mouse | Normal attacks — chain them to pressure the enemy’s Posture |
| Block / Deflect | L1 | Right Mouse | Core mechanic — timed blocks (Deflects) build enemy Posture damage. 100 times more important than a Souls shield |
| Dodge | ○ | ||
| Jump | ✕ | ||
| Grappling Hook | R2 | ||
| Shinobi Prosthetic | L2 | Q | Use the equipped prosthetic tool |
| Use Item | □ | ||
| Stealth | Crouch + behind | Get behind enemies for an instant-kill assassination — works on most grunts and some mini-bosses | |
| Deathblow | △ + R1 | F | Execute once the enemy’s Posture breaks — removes one of their lives |
| Lock-On | R3 | Middle Mouse | Lock on to an enemy |
| Switch Target | R3 → direction | Middle Mouse + direction | Switch lock-on between multiple enemies |
| Perilous - Mikiri Counter | On Perilous Thrust → ○ toward them | Counters thrust Perilous Attacks — deals massive Posture damage | |
| Perilous - Jump Kick | On Perilous Sweep → Jump | Jump-stomp the enemy’s head to neutralize sweep attacks |
The Posture System#
Posture is the heart of Sekiro’s combat — it matters more than health.
| Concept | Notes |
|---|---|
| Posture Bar | Top of the screen — yours on the left, the enemy’s on the right. A full bar means Posture broken |
| Posture Recovery | Posture recovers on its own while you aren’t attacking or blocking. The lower your HP, the slower it recovers |
| Breaking Posture | Landed attacks plus well-timed Deflects build enemy Posture. Broken = Deathblow ready |
| Deflect | Press L1 the instant an attack lands — no HP loss plus a big Posture hit on the enemy. Bigger sparks mean you nailed the timing |
| Counter After a Deflect | A successful Deflect lets you counterattack immediately — disrupting the enemy’s rhythm |
| The Enemy’s Deathblow | If your Posture breaks, you’re wide open — a long, helpless stagger. Very dangerous |
Core principle: Don’t play passively — keep attacking. Pressure suppresses the enemy’s Posture recovery. Mix Deflects with attacks to break their Posture
Health and Deathblows#
| Mechanic | Notes |
|---|---|
| Vitality Nodes | The yellow diamonds above an enemy’s head — each node is one life. Every Deathblow consumes one |
| Bosses Have Multiple Lives | Most bosses have 2-3 lives — you must break their Posture and land a Deathblow each time |
| Posture and Health | The lower an enemy’s HP, the slower their Posture recovers. Chipping health before playing the Posture game is a valid strategy |
| Deathblow Damage | A Deathblow deals fixed damage — it removes a full life no matter how much HP remains |
Resurrection Mechanics#
| Mechanic | Notes |
|---|---|
| Resurrection | You start with 1 revival. Kills build Resurrection power — the red ring on the left side of the screen |
| Revive Immediately | After death, press R1/R2 to choose whether to revive — enemy awareness resets when you do |
| Recharging Revives | Resting at a Sculptor’s Idol fully restores your revives. Killing several enemies within one fight can also bank one |
| Unrevivable | Die twice in quick succession and “Unrevivable” appears — no more reviving on the spot |
| Dragonrot | Frequent deaths spread Dragonrot to NPCs — hurting their side quests. It can be treated with a Dragon’s Blood Droplet |
Strategy: You get two revives per fight (the first is free, the second must be charged through kills). Don’t waste the first one — if things go south, revive once the enemy lets up
Handling Perilous Attacks#
The red kanji means the enemy is using an unblockable special attack — there are three types, each with its own answer.
Perilous Thrusts#
| Tell | Counter |
|---|---|
| Blade drawn to the side, poised to stab | Mikiri Counter (step forward into it) |
| Seen on: Sword Saint and samurai-type enemies | A successful Mikiri Counter deals massive Posture damage |
Perilous Sweeps#
| Tell | Counter |
|---|---|
| A wide horizontal swing aimed at your legs | Jump and stomp their head |
| Seen on: large beasts and polearm wielders | After the jump you can stomp again — stacking extra Posture damage |
Perilous Grabs#
| Tell | Counter |
|---|---|
| Charges in with both arms spread | Jump back or sidestep |
| Seen on: vengeful spirits and large monsters | Cannot be blocked or Mikiri-countered — positioning is your only way out |
Training: Hanbei the Undying at the Dilapidated Temple lets you practice Mikiri Counters and Deflects without limit
Common New Player Questions#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Why won’t rolling dodge attacks? | Sekiro’s roll has no i-frames — stop trying to dodge with it. Use Deflect (L1) instead |
| Lady Butterfly too hard? | Don’t run — press her. When she leaps onto the wires, shoot her down with the Loaded Shuriken |
| Out of Spirit Emblems? | Conserve emblems early and lean on pure swordplay. Once you’re flush with sen, buy emblems from merchants |
| What are Sculptor’s Idols? | Sekiro’s bonfires — saving, fast travel, and upgrades. Resting at one respawns every enemy |
| Lost your sen? | Death costs half your sen. Kill enemies or rest at an idol and the dropped sen is retrieved automatically |
Combat Strategy Cheat Sheet#
| Scenario | Strategy | Reminder |
|---|---|---|
| Facing grunt groups | Assassinate them one at a time — don’t fight head-on | Use the Grappling Hook to reach rooftops — kill from above |
| Facing mini-bosses | Clear the grunts first — then stealth Deathblow one life — then fight face to face | Most mini-bosses can lose one life to a stealth Deathblow |
| Facing bosses | Stay on offense — suppress their Posture recovery — watch for Perilous Attacks | Don’t run — running just means dying faster |
| Low on health | Create space and heal — but not too much space, or the boss recovers Posture | Make sure it’s safe before you drink |
| Out of Spirit Emblems | Pure swordplay — the blade is the core of Sekiro’s combat | The prosthetic is support — not your main weapon |

Your First 20 Minutes#
| Time | Do | Don’t |
|---|---|---|
| 0-2 min | Follow the story — drop down the well — grab the Loaded Shuriken | Don’t skip dialogue — it holds key hints |
| 2-5 min | Meet the Sculptor — rest at the Sculptor’s Idol — learn how upgrades work | Don’t rush out of the temple — practice Deflects with Hanbei the Undying first |
| 5-10 min | Reach the outskirts of Ashina Castle — start exploring | Don’t take on multiple enemies head-on — assassinate them one by one |
| 10-20 min | Find the first merchant — buy a Gourd Seed | Don’t waste sen on Spirit Emblems — Gourd Seeds come first |
Beginner Weapon Comparison#
Sekiro’s main weapon is fixed: the Kusabimaru — you never switch weapons. The comparison below covers how to handle each enemy type you’ll face.
| Enemy Type | Approach | Prosthetic Pick |
|---|---|---|
| Lightly armored grunts | Block and deflect 2-3 hits → Deathblow | Loaded Shuriken — ranged pressure |
| Heavily armored elites | Break their guard with the Loaded Axe, then attack | Loaded Axe — guard breaker |
| Beasts | Startle them with firecrackers, then land 4-5 hits | Shinobi Firecracker — startles them |
| Apparitions | Buff with Divine Confetti before attacking; defend with the umbrella | Phoenix’s Lilac Umbrella — blocks Terror |
| Ranged fighters | Block bullets with the Loaded Umbrella, then close in and attack | Loaded Umbrella — stops bullets |
New Player Q&A#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Why do I keep dying? | Sekiro’s combat rhythm is completely different — stop rolling → start deflecting |
| Lady Butterfly too hard? | Go explore somewhere else first — raise your Attack Power and Gourd charges, then come back |
| What are emblems for? | They fuel the Shinobi Prosthetic — spend them sparingly in combat |
| Is Dragonrot bad? | It doesn’t touch the main story — only certain side quests — treat it when you have resources to spare |
| Should I use a guide? | Explore on your own for your first playthrough — fill the gaps with a guide on NG+ |
Skill Point Mistakes to Avoid#
| Don’t Waste Points On | Why | Learn This First |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlwind Slash | Somewhat useful early but not worth 2 points — Ichimonji is better | Ichimonji |
| Mortal Draw line | Costs 5 points + 5 Spirit Emblems — emblems are scarce early on | Shinobi Eyes |
| Divine Abduction | Only useful in specific spots — not a general-purpose skill | Air Deflect |
Mindset When Facing Bosses#
Every boss in Sekiro is a rhythm duel — stay calm, learn the patterns, and treat each death as practice rather than failure.
