Sekiro Boss Guides#
Sekiro has about 40 bosses and elite enemies — this chapter lays out detailed strategies for all the key bosses, sorted by type and difficulty.
Main Story Bosses#
Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa#
| Info |
Details |
| Location |
Ashina Outskirts — Stairway |
| Deathblows |
1 |
| Weakness |
Grappling hook attacks |
Strategy:
- A mounted boss — extremely mobile. He attacks with wide horizontal sweeps.
- Core strategy: once he rides off, press R2 to grapple straight to him — land an aerial strike, then keep attacking the moment you touch down.
- Don’t try to chase him on foot — wait for him to charge away, then reel yourself in with the hook.
- His rhythm is easy to read — block the string, then counter. When he rears up and levels his spear, that’s a perilous thrust — Mikiri Counter it.
Lady Butterfly#
| Info |
Details |
| Location |
Hirata Estate |
| Deathblows |
2 |
| Weakness |
Shuriken (interrupts her wire hang) |
Strategy:
- Phase 1: she fights with kicks and phantom blades — a fast rhythm but short recovery windows. Stick to her and attack relentlessly — your offense should outpace her posture recovery.
- The last hit of her combo usually leaves her wide open — deflect it and strike back.
- Phase 2: phantom minions join in — don’t panic. Keep running and dodging for about 20 seconds and they fade on their own. You can also throw a Snap Seed to clear them instantly.
- Once her phantoms vanish, Lady Butterfly drops down from above — lock on, knock her out of the air with a shuriken, and punish the fall.
Genichiro Ashina#
| Info |
Details |
| Location |
Ashina Castle — Upper Tower |
| Deathblows |
3 |
| Weakness |
Lightning Reversal (Phase 2+) |
Strategy:
- Round 1 (bow and blade): his arrows hit hard but the wind-up on each shot is long. In melee, watch for his perilous thrust — Mikiri Counter it.
- His signature string: 2 slashes → pause → 3 slashes ending in a thrust. The rhythm is “deflect-deflect-pause-deflect-deflect-deflect-Mikiri Counter”.
- Phase 2: Genichiro adds lightning — he leaps and plunges his blade into the thunderheads to call down a bolt. Lightning Reversal: jump when he jumps → catch the lightning (you’ll take a shock mid-air) → press attack just before landing to hurl it back.
- Phase 3: identical to Phase 2 — he just leans on lightning more. Master the reversal and Phase 3 can be over in 3-4 exchanges.
Guardian Ape#
| Info |
Details |
| Location |
Sunken Valley — Guardian Ape’s Burrow |
| Deathblows |
2 |
| Weakness |
Fire; deflecting his big moves |
Strategy:
- Phase 1 (bestial): frenzied claw flurries — deflect them! The moves look savage but the wind-ups are obvious. Watch for:
- Dung throw: he bends over to pick something up → hurls a projectile — sprint forward past it and attack.
- Rolling attack: he flops down and rolls around the arena — jump over him.
- Slap flurry: a long, wild batting combo — deflect 7-8 hits in a row.
- Phase 2 (headless swordsman): after the first Deathblow the ape gets back up — drawing its own katana and using its neck stump as a scabbard.
- The rhythm changes completely — and becomes more regular. His wide horizontal slash into an overhead chop — perfect-deflect it and he topples.
- Perilous: scream + overhead slam: he backs off and inhales — screams (blockable) → leaps and slams the ground. Perfect-deflect this move to leave him stunned for ages.
- Perilous: sweep: a horizontal sword sweep — jump onto his head.
- The Loaded Spear prosthetic can yank the centipede out of his neck — boosting your posture damage.
- Drops: Malcontent’s Ring
Corrupted Monk#
| Info |
Details |
| Location |
Fountainhead Palace — the bridge |
| Deathblows |
3 |
| Weakness |
Firecrackers, Divine Confetti |
Strategy:
- A marathon fight — patience is everything; you must break her posture three times.
- Her attacks cover a huge area but follow a fixed rhythm — with practice you can deflect every one.
- Firecracker strategy: toss firecrackers right as she winds up to interrupt her and deal heavy posture damage — each stun buys 4-5 free hits. The firecrackers stop working after 3-4 uses.
- Divine Confetti: buffed attacks deal an extra 25% damage — strongly recommended.
- Mikiri Counter her perilous thrusts; jump on the perilous sweeps.
- Poison strategy: poison her with the Lazulite Shuriken or a poison blade — she loses health over time and her posture recovers more slowly.
Divine Dragon#
| Info |
Details |
| Location |
Fountainhead Palace — the Great Cherry Tree |
| Deathblows |
1 |
| Special mechanic |
A puzzle boss — not really a fight |
| Strategy: |
|
- Phase 1: cross the storm clouds to reach the Divine Dragon — grapple from floating stone to floating stone.
- Every time you thin out a cluster of spirits you fill one segment of the Deathblow bar. Fill it 3 times to claim the kill.
- Lightning Reversal: for its thundercloud attack — stand on the floating stone that gets struck → catch the bolt → strike it back.
- After the third Deathblow — you receive the Divine Dragon’s Tear.
Isshin, the Sword Saint#
| Info |
Details |
| Location |
Ashina Castle grounds |
| Deathblows |
Phase 1 (Genichiro): 1 + Phases 2-4 (Isshin): 3 = 4 phases total |
| Weakness |
Mikiri Counter, Lightning Reversal, fire |
Widely considered one of the hardest boss fights of all time — and one of the fairest and most spectacular.
- Genichiro falls much faster than he did the first time — you’ve grown stronger.
- Watch for his Mortal Draw — it glows red as it charges; sprint sideways the instant you see it.
- Finish him quickly — don’t waste healing gourds or Spirit Emblems.
Phase 2: Isshin, the Sword Saint — P1
- He fights with a cross spear plus a blade — wide spear sweeps at range, sword slashes up close.
- He throws out a huge number of perilous thrusts — Mikiri Counter them! It’s your single best source of posture damage.
- When he backsteps he may draw a pistol — roll repeatedly to evade.
Phase 3: Isshin, the Sword Saint — P2
- Adds a charged wide sweep plus lightning attacks.
- Signature combo: a 4-hit spear string into a thrust — deflect 4 hits, then Mikiri Counter the finisher.
- Lightning Reversal window: whenever he leaps to call down lightning — reverse it! It’s the best damage window in P2 and P3.
Phase 4: Isshin, the Sword Saint — P3
- Same as P2 — he simply uses lightning more often.
- Stay calm — you’ve made it this far. Lightning Reversal plus Mikiri Counter is the winning formula.
Key tip: Isshin’s rhythm runs “slow → fast → slow” — don’t let his delayed slashes bait you. Block on the flash, but the overhead spear move is delayed — wait 0.5 seconds before deflecting.

Optional Bosses#
Demon of Hatred#
| Info |
Details |
| Location |
Ashina Outskirts — the secluded far end |
| Deathblows |
3 |
| Weakness |
Fire (Flame Vent + Loaded Axe), Malcontent’s Ring |
Strategy:
- This is a Souls-style boss — yes, a Bloodborne-style giant demon has wandered into Sekiro.
- Phase 1: claw swipes + flaming fists — everything is big and telegraphed. Live at mid-range — not too close, not too far.
- Phase 2: adds a fire-ring AOE — jump to dodge — plus a triple fireball volley.
- Phase 3: adds a whirlwind of flames — keep sprinting to stay clear.
- Malcontent’s Ring: usable three times in Phase 3 — each chime freezes the demon for 6 seconds, a massive damage window.
