Nordic Ashes Beginner Guide#
The first time you open Nordic Ashes: Survivors of Ragnarok, what you need is not a table of numbers but clarity on three things: what kind of game this is, what to do in your first run, and whether dying means the run was wasted. This page nails down all three, based entirely on verified official material.
Before You Start: Which Version Are You Playing#
| Version | Timeline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Early Access | Hit Steam 2022-11-22 | The game first met players in Early Access |
| The Complete Saga | Nordic Ashes: The Complete Saga on Switch / PS5 from 2025-10-25 | Later extended to more regions and Xbox Series |
If you are buying the console physical or digital Complete Saga, all five modes, every map and all character content are on the disc and in the library; the Steam version has been updated continuously since Early Access. Defer to the relevant store page’s edition notes before buying.
How Survivors-Like Play Actually Works#
Nordic Ashes belongs to the survivors-like genre, and its combat is built from three elements — miss one and it falls apart:
- Positioning to dodge — monster swarms flood in like a tide; your movement is the only amulet, and getting surrounded is the start of a swift death;
- Auto-attacks — weapon attacks need no manual aiming; what you manage is position, letting your damage naturally cover the enemies it should;
- Building — you unlock weapons and skills mid-run, growing each character into a coherent combo run by run; build strength decides how long you live.
The most misunderstood of the three is the second: this is not a traditional bullet-hell shooter. You don’t dodge walls of projectiles — the pressure comes from enemy bodies and their numbers. The mental model is completely different; don’t open the game with bullet-hell instincts.
What to Do in Your First Run#
The goal of run one is not to win but to make “staying alive” muscle memory. Work through it in this order:
Step 1: Pick a Survivor#
The game has 10+ survivors, each with a signature weapon and skills. Three named in official material:
| Character | Role | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Axeldör | Viking warrior | Players who like head-on melee brawls |
| Thyra | A fierce ranger | Players who prefer ranged kiting and keeping distance |
| Hafgrim | Master of the elements | Players who want elemental attack styles |
The names and roles of the rest are outside this site’s verified material; pick from the in-game roster, and when stuck, choose by the melee/ranged preference first.
Step 2: Stay Alive, and Keep Moving#
After the run starts, exactly one thing matters most: keep moving. Swarms close in from every direction and standing still is suicide. Don’t chase kill counts early — first learn your movement speed, the swarm’s encirclement pace, and the edges of your attack coverage.
Step 3: Use the Mid-Run Unlocks#
The core loop is “unlock weapons and skills during battle”. Upgrades keep arriving as the run progresses; don’t agonize over the optimal pick in run one — take what comes and experience it, watching what each option changes.
Step 4: Mind the Reward Shrines#
Reward Shrines are scattered across the realms, offering tasks or challenges for rewards as you roam. Early on you don’t have to clear every shrine — weigh whether your build can absorb the challenge first; walking away costs little.
Step 5: Meet the Elites and Bosses#
Elites and bosses each run their own behavior logic, nothing like the grunts. Don’t brawl them on first contact — fight while observing their patterns; dying once is still valid information gathering.
Death Is Not the End: Meta-Progression#
The point of a Roguelite is that even death pays out. Meta-progression has three layers:
| System | Purpose | How to use it early |
|---|---|---|
| Constellations (skill trees) | Raise each survivor’s stats | Invest in the character you use most |
| Yggdrasil | The global progress tree, boosting functions | Fill whatever function is currently blocking you |
| Character Masteries | Push characters to their cap | Commit long-term once you pick a main |
Every run — win or lose — advances these systems. So don’t be discouraged by early deaths; you are paving the way for every run after. Specific point values are not published in official material; just read each entry’s description before lighting it.
Common Newcomer Mistakes#
- Playing it like a bullet hell: the pressure comes from enemy bodies and numbers, not projectiles; hug the swarm’s edge and kite, don’t hunt gaps in a barrage;
- Standing still to deal damage: auto-attacks don’t mean standing still; position decides your coverage and the hits you take;
- Ignoring shrine-task risk: shrine tasks carry real challenge cost — accepting one with an unfinished build easily throws away a good run;
- Rushing high difficulty at the start: of the five modes (Adventure, Ragnarok, Daily Challenge, Custom, Nightmare), build fundamentals in Adventure first; leave Ragnarok and Nightmare until your meta-progression has spread;
- Switching characters constantly: Mastery and Constellation growth are tracked per character, so switching means restarting accumulation — focus on one character early.
Controls and Settings#
The official material verified for this page publishes no key list, and this site will not invent one. The game runs on PC, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck; check and adjust keys in the settings menu in-game, and Steam Deck users can play handheld directly.
A Suggested Learning Route#
- Play one Adventure run with any character; the goal is to beat your own survival record;
- Top up your meta-progression, run two or three more, and observe how the game feels once a build comes together;
- Start taking shrine tasks and practice completing challenges under pressure;
- Move to a second and third character to find which signature weapon type suits you;
- Once a main is settled, turn to the long-term Constellation and Mastery grind.
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do I need the previous version or DLC first | No. The Complete Saga is the full version of the game; the DLC is expansion, not prerequisite |
| How long is a run | Officially verified material publishes no mode durations — judge by actual runs |
| How do characters unlock | Unlock mechanics are outside the verified material; follow the in-game guidance |
| Is there multiplayer | Verified material confirms single-player plus Twitch integration; no multiplayer mentioned |
| I’m stuck — now what | Return to meta-progression for stats, swap relic combinations, then consider a different character |
Set run one’s goal at “understanding the rules” rather than “winning” and you will actually ramp up faster. The rest is letting the meta-progression cash in bit by bit — the best part of a Roguelite.
