Dark Souls III Builds#
The build system of Dark Souls III compresses into three criteria: stat targets (the soft cap on each primary stat), infusion choice (let the gem follow the scaling direction), and ring setup (the core trio plus a fourth slot matched to the build). Plug the three criteria into the build you pick and your setup will not drift off course. This page does not list specific weapon attack ratings — damage shifts constantly with reinforcement level, infusion path, and character level, so memorizing numbers is pointless. Understanding the criteria matters far more than remembering values.
Stat Allocation: Learn the Soft Caps First#
| Stat | Target | The Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 40 | Soft cap for Strength damage scaling — the endpoint of Strength builds |
| Dexterity | 40 | Soft cap for Dexterity damage scaling |
| Dexterity (casting) | 50 | Dexterity also drives casting speed; the casting soft cap is 50, not 40 |
| Intelligence | 50 | Soft cap for spell damage scaling — the endpoint of Sorcerer builds |
| Faith | 50 | Anchor allocation to the 50 Faith requirement of the miracle Sunlight Spear; reach the threshold first, then chase output |
| Vigor | 40 | The HP breakpoint — the survival floor of every build |
| Endurance | 40 | The stamina breakpoint — your budget for rolls and combos |
| Luck | Grows bleed buildup | The damage engine of Bleed builds; bleed buildup scales with Luck |
Strength builds also carry one rule of their own: while two-handing a weapon, Strength counts at 1.5x. That means 27 Strength one-handed is an effective 40 two-handed — sitting exactly on the soft cap. Pour every point you save into Vigor and Endurance; it is the classic budget allocation for Strength play.
The Six Builds at a Glance#
| Build | Primary Stats | Infusion | Fourth Ring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | Strength 40 | Heavy | Wolf Ring (trading blows) |
| Dexterity | Dexterity 40 (50 for casting) | Sharp | Hornet Ring (criticals) |
| Quality | Strength 40, Dexterity 40 | Refined | Wolf or Hornet, picked by playstyle |
| Sorcerer | Intelligence 50 | Crystal (melee backup) | Spell damage or casting speed |
| Miracle | Faith 50 | Lightning | Miracle damage or criticals |
| Bleed | Luck | Blood, Hollow | Covetous Gold Serpent only when farming |
The core ring trio — Ring of Favor, Havel’s Ring, and Chloranthy Ring — is universal across all builds. The fourth slot follows build and playstyle; see the master ring rules at the end of this page.
Strength Build: Heavy Infusion and Havel’s Heavyweight Class#
Stat Targets#
| Stat | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 40 | Soft cap; under the two-handing rule, 27 one-handed equals 40 |
| Vigor | 40 | Trading blows up close demands an HP cushion |
| Endurance | 30-40 | One swing of a heavy weapon eats half a bar, so budget stamina generously |
| Dexterity | Meet weapon requirements | Ultra greatswords generally want Dexterity in the low teens; stop once you qualify |
Infusion Choice#
Strength builds have exactly one infusion answer: Heavy infusion. It pushes a weapon’s scaling entirely toward Strength, and since scaling returns drop sharply once Strength passes its soft cap of 40, you stop spending points there. Pick ultra greatswords, great axes, and great hammers with strong Strength scaling growth — the poster children are the Exile Greatsword and the Great Axe. Both are community-endorsed beneficiaries of Heavy infusion: heavy poise damage stacked on a big attack rating means one swing, one stagger.
Ring Setup#
- Core trio: Ring of Favor (HP, stamina, and equip load all raised at once) + Havel’s Ring (higher equip load cap so the heavy armor actually goes on) + Chloranthy Ring (faster stamina recovery — all the breathing room after a heavy swing);
- Fourth-slot rule: if you trade hits with humanoid enemies and tank light attacks to land your own, take the Wolf Ring (more poise). If you would rather close with a critical once their poise breaks, take the Hornet Ring (higher critical damage).
Playstyle Rules#
- Two-handing is the default; the points you save get you into the big weapons a step early and your swings out one patch ahead of everyone else;
- Plan every swing around the stamina budget — one swing plus its recovery eats a full bar, so never force a second hit into the enemy’s attack window;
- Stack poise with heavy armor and roll at the mid-speed threshold; block and tank light attacks on poise, and keep rolling as the fallback.
Dexterity Build: Sharp Infusion and Casting Speed#
Stat Targets#
| Stat | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dexterity | 40 | Damage soft cap, the endpoint of Sharp scaling |
| Dexterity (when also casting) | 50 | Casting speed soft cap; push higher only for spell-buff hybrids |
| Vigor | 40 | The safety floor for a style that lives at knifing range |
| Endurance | 40 | Capital for long combos and repeated rolls |
| Strength | Meet weapon requirements | No extra investment |
Infusion Choice#
The Dexterity answer is Sharp infusion, pushing scaling toward Dex. The signature weapon is the Sellsword Twinblades — Sharp-infused dual-wield light-attack combos are the community’s standard answer for the early game, paired with temporary enchantments such as fire and lightning buffs to recover the elemental damage Sharp cannot provide. Fast katanas fit the Sharp route just as well: fast swings, short recovery, winning exchanges over and over on superior stamina.
Ring Setup#
- Core trio as always: Favor + Chloranthy (combos and rolls run on stamina) + Havel’s (Dex builds wear light armor, so swap it for another utility ring if equip load allows);
- Fourth-slot rule: parry-and-backstab critical players take the Hornet Ring; combo players can consider Pontiff’s Right Eye (successive attacks stack a damage bonus) — one of the few signature options reserved for Dex combo play.
Playstyle Rules#
- The core rhythm is “a few hits, then a roll” — short startup, quick recovery, tug-of-war on superior stamina, and never a greedy extra swing;
- Damage gains fall off hard past Dexterity 40, but the casting speed soft cap sits at 50 — spend 10 more levels if you want fast spell buffs;
- Keep equip load as low as possible for the fastest roll; a Dexterity build’s defense is the movement itself.
Quality Build: Refined Infusion at 40/40#
Stat Targets#
| Stat | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 40 | Split evenly with Dexterity; both hands have to hit hard |
| Dexterity | 40 | Same as above |
| Vigor | 40 | The universal survival line for a jack-of-all-trades style |
| Endurance | 30-40 | Straight sword combos burn real stamina; keep headroom |
Infusion Choice#
The Quality answer is Refined infusion: Strength and Dexterity scaling grow together, and 40/40 feeds both to their soft caps at once. The rule is to read a weapon’s own scaling direction — straight swords typically grow both scalings evenly, and the Lothric Knight Sword and Dark Sword are textbook Refined beneficiaries. Quality’s essential edge is the widest weapon pool in the game: at 40/40, ninety percent of the arsenal works the moment you pick it up, and swapping weapons amounts to swapping playstyles.
Ring Setup#
- Core trio: Favor + Havel’s + Chloranthy; Quality builds often wear mid-weight armor, and Havel’s keeps the load threshold flexible;
- Fourth-slot rule: trading blows → Wolf Ring; closing fights with criticals and parries → Hornet Ring — Quality can afford both, so switch on weekly feel.
Playstyle Rules#
- Read the matchup first and swap weapons to suit it; the wide arsenal is Quality’s core resource;
- Refined scaling only pays off at 40/40, so run Sharp or Heavy as a stopgap early and re-infuse once the points land;
- Mid armor with mid-speed rolls is the comfort zone; to chase elite footwork, push equip load below 25%.
Sorcerer Build: 50 Intelligence and Crystal Infusion#
Stat Targets#
| Stat | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Intelligence | 50 | Spell damage soft cap, the absolute core of a Sorcerer build |
| Attunement | Enough for your spell slots | Room for at least two damage spells and two utility spells |
| Vigor | 30 | Cloth robes are brittle; one melee connect means near-death |
| Strength, Dexterity | Meet catalyst and emergency weapon requirements | No extra investment |
Infusion Choice and Catalyst#
The Sorcerer’s damage main line is casting through a catalyst; the standard late-game catalyst is the Court Sorcerer’s Staff, with the highest Intelligence scaling growth. Advance the spell lineup by stage: Great Soul Arrow clears maps while saving resources, Crystal Soul Spear (48 Intelligence requirement) handles boss-fight burst, and Hidden Body covers stealthy traversal. Melee backup weapons always take Crystal infusion — Crystal adds Intelligence scaling and magic damage, so the points a Sorcerer pours into Intelligence flow straight into the melee weapon. The Moonlight Greatsword is itself an Intelligence-scaled ultra greatsword, the signature backup piece of Intelligence builds.
Ring Setup#
- The core trio holds for casters too: Favor covers HP and stamina, Chloranthy speeds stamina recovery (saved for the emergency roll);
- Fourth-slot rule: for damage output, take Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring (higher spell damage) first; for casting tempo, take Sage Ring (raises casting speed through virtual Dexterity) — both are community-standard Sorcerer picks; switch between boss runs and map traversal.
Playstyle Rules#
- Snipe from the outer edge of enemy aggro, and clear ranged casters before walking through a door;
- Spells refill on Ashen Estus Flasks; on long expeditions keep one emergency cast in reserve, and spend the good stuff where it counts;
- The emergency weapon is that one Crystal-infused straight sword; stamina goes to rolls and cleanup kills only.
Miracle Build: Faith, Lightning Infusion, and Sunlight Spear#
Stat Targets#
| Stat | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Faith | 50 | The allocation node for Sunlight Spear, the core threshold of Miracle builds |
| Attunement | Enough slots for miracles | Keep room for damage, protection, and your revival miracle |
| Vigor | 35 | Tankier than a pure Sorcerer; Miracle builds often fight at mid range |
| Strength, Dexterity | Meet Lightning-infusion weapon requirements | No extra investment |
Infusion Choice and Sacred Chime#
Miracle damage runs two tracks: Lightning-infused weapons coat physical weapons in lightning damage with Faith scaling, so there is output in close scrapes too; at range, cast the lightning spear family of miracles through a sacred chime, ending at Sunlight Spear — 50 Faith required, which is the direct reason Miracle builds push Faith to 50. Choose chimes by stage: the Canvas Talisman carries the better part of a playthrough, then swap to Yorshka’s Chime late for full Faith scaling. The revival miracle (it brings you back once from lethal damage) is a life-saver worth investing in on every build.
Ring Setup#
- Core trio as usual: Favor + Havel’s (headroom for the chime and mid armor) + Chloranthy;
- Fourth-slot rule: miracle damage first, so take a Faith-side damage ring; if you fight up close with a Lightning-infused weapon, the Hornet Ring for critical finishes works too.
Playstyle Rules#
- Miracles cast slower than sorceries across the board, so leave chanting room in your positioning; casting with your back to a corner is a fundamental skill;
- Alternate the Lightning-infused weapon and lightning spears: enemy in your face, swing the weapon; distance opens up, throw the spear — walk on two legs;
- Only after 50 Faith and Sunlight Spear do you stack HP and Attunement; a Faith build below the threshold has no presentable output.
Bleed Build: Luck, Blood Infusion, and the Covetous Gold Serpent Misconception#
Stat Targets#
| Stat | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Luck | As high as it will go | Bleed buildup scales with Luck — the build’s only damage engine |
| Vigor | 40 | Bleed fights at point-blank, so HP is the margin for error |
| Endurance | 40 | Dual-wield combos are extremely stamina-hungry |
| Strength, Dexterity | Meet weapon requirements | No extra investment |
Infusion Choice#
The Bleed answer is Blood infusion: it adds bleed buildup to the weapon, and that buildup scales with Luck — the mechanical basis for dumping every point into Luck. The alternate route is Hollow infusion: physical damage scales with Luck while the weapon’s innate bleed is kept, but it requires the character to stay Hollow, suiting Luck builds that also want physical damage. Signature weapons are multi-hit dual curved swords like the Gravewarden Twinblades and the Carthus Curved Sword — the more blades land, the faster bleed stacks; weapons without innate bleed can be coated with Carthus Rouge for temporary bleed buildup.
Ring Setup#
- Core trio: Favor + Chloranthy (combos are the biggest stamina spenders) + Havel’s or a utility ring, decided by equip load;
- Fourth-slot rule: the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring has nothing to do with bleed damage — it only raises item discovery (drop rates) and belongs to farming. Give the Bleed build’s fourth slot honestly to the Wolf Ring (trading) or the Hornet Ring (criticals), and yield it to the Gold Serpent only in dedicated farming runs.
Playstyle Rules#
- A full bleed bar triggers a large chunk of damage — the best value against humanoid enemies and high-HP targets; against undead-type and bleed-resistant enemies, switch weapons outright;
- Dual-wield light-attack combos are the fastest way to stack bleed; two full combos at point-blank will force a bleed proc;
- Luck scaling only touches bleed buildup (the Hollow route also counts physical damage) — do not expect Luck to work miracles on a regular weapon’s attack rating.
Master Ring Rules#
| Ring | What It Does | Where It Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ring of Favor | Raises HP, stamina, and max equip load at once | The first ring on every build; the +3 version is a qualitative leap |
| Havel’s Ring | Raises max equip load | The threshold guarantee behind Strength heavy armor and Quality mid armor |
| Chloranthy Ring | Speeds up stamina recovery | Roll- and combo-reliant Dexterity and Bleed builds feed on it |
| Wolf Ring | Raises poise | First pick for heavy-weapon trades and tanking light attacks against humanoids |
| Hornet Ring | Boosts critical damage (ripostes, backstabs, parry counters) | First pick for critical and parry playstyles |
| Sage Ring | Raises casting speed through virtual Dexterity | The tempo option for caster builds |
| Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring | Raises magic damage | The Sorcerer’s damage-focused fourth slot |
| Covetous Gold Serpent Ring | Only raises item discovery | Strictly for farming drops — no relevance to damage |
Rule summary: the core trio (Favor, Havel’s, Chloranthy) covers survival and stamina, while the fourth slot follows “trading → Wolf, criticals → Hornet, casting → damage or speed”. The upgraded (+1 to +3) versions are scattered across NG+ cycles and The Ringed City DLC, and the +3 jump is well worth collecting on later playthroughs.
FAQ#
| Question | The Rule-Based Answer |
|---|---|
| Why stop Strength at 40 instead of 99? | 40 is the Strength scaling soft cap; two-handing counts at 1.5x, so 27 one-handed equals 40 two-handed — the points saved buy more Vigor and Endurance |
| What exactly is a Quality build? | Refined infusion plus 40/40 Strength/Dexterity double soft caps — the jack-of-all-trades with the widest weapon pool |
| Is 40 Dexterity enough? | Damage scaling is settled at 40; but the casting speed soft cap is 50, so push further for hybrid casting |
| How much Intelligence does a Sorcerer need? | 50 is the spell damage soft cap; after that, redirect points into Vigor and Attunement |
| What does a Bleed build actually deal damage with? | The bleed buildup of Blood-infused weapons scales with Luck; the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring only adds drop rates, not bleed |
| Can’t decide on the fourth ring? | Trading → Wolf Ring, criticals → Hornet Ring, casting → damage boosts — pick one of the three based on how you died this week |
