Bloodborne Builds#
Weapons define the hunter, and builds define the weapon.
Bloodborne’s build system is remarkably deep — different stat spreads and weapon pairings produce completely different combat styles. This chapter breaks down the mainstream build archetypes by stat direction and gives you actionable leveling and loadout plans.
Understanding the Stat System First#
A Bloodborne hunter has six stats: Vitality, Endurance, Strength, Skill, Bloodtinge, and Arcane. The absolute cap for every stat is 99, but returns don’t scale linearly to the top — every stat hits a noticeable soft cap past the mid-to-high range, so leveling is really about deciding “where should my resources go at this stage,” not staring down a fixed number.
Here’s how the six stats divide the work:
| Stat | Primary Effect | Leveling Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Vitality | Max HP | The survival foundation of every build; boss hits in Bloodborne hurt enormously, so Vitality never goes to waste |
| Endurance | Stamina bar | Determines your margin for consecutive dodges and combos; heavy-weapon builds lean on it hardest |
| Strength | STR-scaling weapons, two-handing | The path to greataxes, holy blades, and hammers |
| Skill | SKL-scaling weapons, visceral attack returns | The path to fast blades, thrusting weapons, and high-burst executions |
| Bloodtinge | Firearm damage, bloodtinge weapon scaling | Specialize here if gun parries and bloodtinge weapons are your core damage |
| Arcane | Arcane/fire/bolt weapons and hunter tools | Stack it for elemental buffs, transformed weapon elements, and tool casting |
One important caveat: Bloodborne has no officially published “X points = Y effect” stat table, and the community’s various precise conversion charts shift with patches and methodology. Every suggestion on this page is a directional guideline to help you order your investment — not a promise of any specific payoff number.
Two underlying mechanics worth memorizing before anything else, since they cut across every build:
- Rally: HP you lose doesn’t vanish instantly — it lingers in an orange state for a short window. Fight back and land hits on enemies within that window to reclaim it. This encourages hunters to trade blows up close instead of retreating, and it’s the confidence behind aggressive pressure and punish play.
- Stamina management: Dodges in Bloodborne cost a real chunk of stamina, and rolling right after a heavy combo is a recipe for an empty bar and a free hit against you. Building the habit of “always keep enough stamina for one dodge after every attack” saves more lives than brute-force Endurance stacking.
Build Overview#
| Build | Core Stat | Identity | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | Strength | Heavy weapons swinging faces, high forgiveness | ★★☆☆☆ |
| Skill | Skill | Fast combos and high-burst executions | ★★★☆☆ |
| Bloodtinge | Bloodtinge | Gun parry and bloodtinge weapon specialist | ★★★★☆ |
| Arcane | Arcane | Elemental weapons and hunter tools play | ★★★★★ |
| Quality (STR/SKL) | Strength + Skill | The middle path with the widest weapon flexibility | ★★☆☆☆ |
Strength Build#
Stat Allocation#
Push Vitality into the mid-to-high range first so no boss two-shots you, add enough Endurance to support “two heavy attacks plus one roll,” then concentrate all remaining resources into Strength. Skill, Bloodtinge, and Arcane only need to cover weapon requirements — don’t split focus. Strength’s returns drop off noticeably in the high range, so rather than stacking it endlessly, recycle surplus levels back into Vitality.
Recommended Weapons#
| Weapon | Strengths | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Hunter’s Axe | Huge transformed charged-spin range; a crowd-brawling monster | Starting choice |
| Kirkhammer | Enormous one-hit pressure in transformed hammer form | Hunter’s Dream purchase |
| Ludwig’s Holy Blade | Scales with both Strength and Skill; wide two-handed slashing reach | Hunter’s Dream purchase |
| Boom Hammer | Fire-imbued blunt weapon with high explosive ground slams | DLC |
Combat Style#
- Build around transformed heavy attacks and charged heavies, pursuing quality over quantity in every exchange
- Use your range advantage to control spacing and force enemies into the spin attack’s coverage circle
- Keep stamina reserved for a dodge after every swing, and let Rally healing offset the cost of trading blows
Rune Setup#
| Rune | Effect |
|---|---|
| Communion | Raises max Blood Vial capacity, stretching your combat sustain |
| Clawmark | Boosts visceral attack damage; pair with the heavy poise damage of big weapons to manufacture execution openings |
| Great Lake / Deep Sea family | Reduces physical damage taken, raising your error margin further |
Blood Gem Priorities#
Farm high-rank physical attack-up gems in the deeper Chalice Dungeons. The higher the primary percentage, the better, and matching all three slots to the same effect delivers the most direct payoff. Cursed gems come with higher stats, but the tradeoff usually deserves careful weighing.
Skill Build#
Stat Allocation#
The Vitality-to-Endurance ratio mirrors the Strength build, with Skill taking the lion’s share of resources. Strength only needs to meet weapon minimums; hunters running fast thrusting blades can drop Bloodtinge and Arcane entirely. Visceral attack damage ties tightly to Skill, so execution payoffs climb visibly as you invest.
Recommended Weapons#
| Weapon | Strengths | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Saw Cleaver | Fast attack speed with excellent stagger against beasts and humanoids | Starting choice |
| Saw Spear | Long thrusting reach with flexible transformed combos | Starting choice |
| Threaded Cane | Huge whip-form zoning range and lightning-quick sword form | Starting choice |
| Blade of Mercy | Top-tier dual-blade attack speed with high execution payoffs | Eileen the Crow’s questline |
Combat Style#
- Build around light-attack chains and tight circling backstabs, trading with speed rather than bulk
- Landing extremely fast hits to trigger stagger, then converting into a visceral attack, is this build’s core damage loop
- No other archetype exploits backstab windows on humanoid bosses as efficiently
Rune Setup#
| Rune | Effect |
|---|---|
| Communion | More Blood Vial capacity to sustain constant close-range trading |
| Clawmark | Visceral damage boost, wired directly into this build’s core loop |
| Blood Rapture | Restores HP on successful visceral attacks, closing the execute-to-survive loop |
Blood Gem Priorities#
Physical attack-up effects come first here, same as the Strength build. Because you swing far more often, consider mixing in gems with fast HP regen or stamina-related effects to keep your combos flowing smoothly.
Bloodtinge Build#
Stat Allocation#
Bloodtinge is this build’s lifeline — both firearm damage and bloodtinge weapon scaling feed off it. Raise Vitality as usual, since bloodtinge play often means dancing near low HP. Skill just needs to cover weapon requirements; keep Strength at usable levels. Add Endurance to personal taste — gun parry play depends on stamina far less than melee archetypes.
Recommended Weapons#
| Weapon | Strengths | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Chikage | Extremely high bloodtinge scaling in transformed form; melee and gunshot in one | DLC |
| Evelyn | The benchmark pistol for bloodtinge firearm damage | DLC |
| Rifle Spear | Thrusting blade and gun parry in one package; smooth melee-to-range transitions | Hunter’s Dream purchase |
Combat Style#
- The gun parry (firing at the exact instant of an enemy attack to stun them) is the signature opener, chained into a visceral attack for burst
- The Chikage’s transformed form drains HP continuously, so manage your health bar proactively instead of passively bleeding
- Melee and ranged complement each other — firearm finishers and melee pressure switch seamlessly
Ammo Recycling Loop#
Empty Blood Vial → press △ to recycle → gain 5 Quicksilver Bullets → gun parry spends bullets → Empty Blood Vial → loopThis loop is the Bloodtinge build’s resource engine: converting surplus Blood Vials into ammunition keeps the high-cost gun parry playstyle running for the long haul. In real fights, recycle during safe windows — never press △ with a boss in your face.
Rune Setup#
| Rune | Effect |
|---|---|
| Formless Oedon | Raises bullet carry capacity, widening the loop’s buffer |
| Bone Marrow Ash | Amplifies bloodtinge gunshot damage, making parries and ranged finishers hit harder |
| Blood Rapture | Heals on visceral attacks, pairing perfectly with low-HP play for survival |
Blood Gem Priorities#
Hunt for bloodtinge attack-up effects in the deeper Chalice Dungeons. Firearms and the Chikage’s transformed form share this gem system, so matching all three slots amplifies both damage routes at once.
Arcane Build#
Stat Allocation#
Arcane determines how much damage bonus you can extract from elemental weapon forms and hunter tools — it is the absolute core. Vitality and Endurance still form the base as usual. Note that this build is picky about its weapon pool: pure physical Strength/Skill weapons gain nothing from Arcane, so pick weapons with innate arcane/fire/bolt damage or enchantable transformed forms.
Recommended Weapons and Tools#
| Weapon/Tool | Strengths | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Holy Moonlight Sword | A greatsword split between physical and arcane damage, spectacular in transformed form | DLC, after defeating Ludwig |
| Tonitrus | A bolt hammer with a clear edge against beast-type enemies | Hunter’s Dream purchase |
| Augur of Ebrietas | Summons a tentacle shockwave with a safe, long casting range | Hunter’s Dream purchase |
| Executioner’s Gloves | Tracking arcane projectiles that land in full on large targets | Hunter’s Dream purchase |
Combat Style#
- Rotate between elemental transformed weapons and hunter tools for the widest damage-type coverage of any build
- Swap between bolt, fire, and arcane damage depending on each enemy’s weakness to strike the counter
- Tool casts consume Quicksilver Bullets, so coordinate with the Blood Vial recycling loop to manage resources
Rune Setup#
| Rune | Effect |
|---|---|
| Eye | Raises item discovery rates — a significant payoff when farming gems in the depths |
| Communion | More Blood Vial capacity to cover transformed weapon HP drain |
| Formless Oedon | Higher bullet cap, the ammo foundation for hunter tools |
Blood Gem Priorities#
Gem effects for the Arcane build depend on the weapon form: pure arcane attack gems fit the Holy Moonlight Sword’s arcane side, while fire/bolt weapons want the matching elemental boost. Before mixing sets, confirm which damage type your weapon actually scales with — don’t let gem effects and weapon elements misalign.
Quality Build (Balanced Strength/Skill)#
Stat Allocation#
Alternate pushes into Strength and Skill so neither weapon family falls behind — the most weapon-adaptive route in the entire game. Vitality and Endurance remain the top priorities as always, because the Quality build’s fun lies in swapping weapons to match the fight, and that only works if you live long enough.
Recommended Weapons#
| Weapon | Strengths | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Ludwig’s Holy Blade | The benchmark weapon scaling with both Strength and Skill | Hunter’s Dream purchase |
| Saw Cleaver | The Skill-side fast-attack workhorse | Starting choice |
| Kirkhammer | The Strength-side pressure workhorse | Hunter’s Dream purchase |
Combat Style#
- Swap between light and heavy weapon pairings depending on the enemy type
- The classic one-handed weapon plus firearm hunter setup holds up in every combat scenario
- Stats spread thin means burst ceilings sit below specialized builds, but the floor is the most stable of all
Build Comparison#
| Category | Strength | Skill | Bloodtinge | Arcane |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-hit damage | Very high | Mid-to-high | High (parry burst) | Mid |
| Attack speed | Slow | Fast | Mid | Mid |
| Attack range | Large | Mid | Long (firearms) | Mid-to-long (tools) |
| Visceral attacks | Average | Very high | High | Average |
| Damage coverage | Mostly physical | Mostly physical | Bloodtinge | Arcane/fire/bolt |
| Weapon pool | Strength family | Skill family | Bloodtinge family | Elements and tools |
| Difficulty | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★★ |
Which Build Should You Choose#
For Beginners#
Go with the Strength build or the Quality build. Both offer high forgiveness and low weapon-acquisition barriers, and the trade quality of heavy attacks can mask positioning flaws while you focus on learning boss behavior patterns.
For Intermediate Players#
Try the Skill build or the Bloodtinge build. Both routes demand sharper timing — backstab executions and gun parry windows take practice — but the damage ceiling and pure satisfaction once mastered far exceed the basic archetypes.
For Veterans#
Commit to the Arcane build. The weapon pool requires careful curation and resource management runs more complex, but the tactical depth of elemental counters and tool rotation is the best in the game — a perfect fit for old hunters who have fully internalized the combat system.
Leveling and Upgrade Pace#
Stat Leveling Order#
| Phase | Priority Direction |
|---|---|
| Early game | Build up Vitality and Endurance, meet the stat requirements of your main weapon |
| Mid game | Concentrate resources into your primary damage stat for a qualitative damage jump |
| Late game | Once the main stat enters diminishing-returns territory, recycle into Vitality and utility stats |
Core principle: never sacrifice survivability to chase a specific number. Bloodborne’s boss fights allow almost no mistakes, and the sustain value Vitality brings ranks near the top across the entire game.
Weapon Upgrade Order#
| Priority | Target |
|---|---|
| 1 | Upgrade your main weapon to +6 to clear the mid-game damage threshold |
| 2 | Push your main weapon toward +9 |
| 3 | Bring backup weapons to +6 for enemies with different weaknesses |
| 4 | Max your main weapon at +10 (the cap) |
Rare upgrade materials only flow in volume during the mid-to-late game, so stalling at +6/+9 early is normal pacing — don’t repeatedly grind old areas just to hit max level.
Final Thoughts#
Choosing the right build is the key to success in Bloodborne. Pick based on your own playstyle instead of blindly chasing the strongest — what matters most is enjoying the game itself. Remember: there is no best build, only the build that best fits you.
