Chalice Dungeon Guide#

Chalice Dungeon Guide

Chalice Dungeons are a randomly generated dungeon system in Bloodborne that runs independently of the main story. Hunters enter the dungeons through chalice rituals, facing bosses found nowhere else and scavenging rare Blood Gems and equipment. The dungeons are divided into four series—Pthumeru, Hintertomb, Loran and Isz—with depths running from 1 to 5; the higher the depth, the stronger the enemies, the higher the grade of ritual materials, and the better the grade of the Blood Gems that drop.

Chalice Dungeon Overview#

Item Description
System role A random dungeon independent of the main story; endgame content of a side nature
Chalice series Four series: Pthumeru, Hintertomb, Loran and Isz
Depth range 1 to 5; the higher the depth, the higher the enemy and material grade
Layout generation Fixed chalices have fixed layouts; a Root Chalice generates differently every time
Main rewards Unique bosses, high-grade Blood Gems, ritual materials
Online Co-op summoning supported; Sinister Chalices allow hostile invasions

The Four Chalice Series at a Glance#

Chalice series Visual style Main output and traits
Pthumeru Yharnam-style stone tombs criss-crossed by corridors and stairways The most basic series, mainly physical Blood Gems, ultimately leading to Great Pthumeru Ihyll; the Queen in its depths is the endpoint of the whole dungeon system
Hintertomb A branch tomb of the Pthumeru line, with more winding routes and many forks An early branch dungeon with a shorter depth chain; good for practice and for accumulating ritual materials
Loran A foreign tomb ravaged by the beast scourge, dim and scorched in tone The main source of fire and bolt Blood Gems; bosses are mostly beast-type enemies that wield bolt and fire
Isz Ruins of a great cathedral shrouded in starlight and arcane The main source of Arcane Blood Gems; cosmic bosses such as Rom and Ebrietas appear here

Depth Mechanics#

The fixed chalices of each series unlock in order of depth; completing the prerequisite dungeon lets you challenge the next depth. Depth is not the floor number inside a dungeon but the strength grade of the whole dungeon: the higher the depth, the fiercer the enemy composition, the higher the grade of materials the rite requires, and the better the grade of the boss’s Blood Gem drops.

Depth Qualitative traits
Depth 1 An introductory dungeon whose enemy composition is close to the second half of the main story; suited to Hunters encountering the dungeon system for the first time
Depth 2 Enemy density and aggression rise noticeably; dungeon-exclusive bosses and better Blood Gems begin to appear
Depth 3 Rites begin to need rarer materials; beast-type and caster-type bosses appear mixed together
Depth 4 The Defiled Chalice, which carries its own curse, appears; a more complete build is required
Depth 5 The top-tier dungeon; Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen presides over Great Pthumeru Ihyll, a stable source of the highest-grade Blood Gems

Fixed Chalices and Root Chalices#

Type Traits Use
Fixed Chalice Layout, bosses and rewards are fixed; unlocked after the corresponding source is defeated for the first time Advance through each series’ depths in order and unlock the next chalice
Root Chalice Consumes materials through a rite to generate a random layout Repeatedly generate new dungeons for farming Blood Gems, materials and unexpected encounters

Fixed chalices mainly come from main-story and dungeon bosses: the Blood-Starved Beast drops the first Pthumeru Chalice, the Abhorrent Beast drops the Ailing Loran Chalice, Amygdala drops the Defiled Chalice, and Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos drops the Isz Chalice. The remaining chalices of each tier mostly come from boss drops and coffin searches in prerequisite dungeons, unlocking step by step along the depth chain.

Ritual Materials#

Performing a chalice ritual before the gravestones at the Hunter’s Dream workshop generates a dungeon. A fixed chalice needs only the chalice itself plus a small amount of materials, while a Root Chalice costs noticeably more, and higher depths demand higher-grade materials.

Material Use How to obtain
Ritual Blood (grades 1 to 5) The core material for generating a dungeon; its grade must match the depth Scavenging and kills in dungeons of the corresponding depth; some low-grade Ritual Blood can be bought with Insight from the messengers in the Dream
Tomb Mold (grades 1 to 5) A common cost for Root Chalice rites Killing enemies and breaking urns inside dungeons
Red Jelly A rare material needed for deeper dungeon rites The Nightmare areas late in the main story and dungeons of Depth 3 and above
Pearl Slug A rare material needed for some rites Scavenging inside dungeons
Living String Needed to generate the final-tier Pthumeru dungeon Defeat the Brain of Mensis in the main story
Sage’s Wrist Additional offering material Obtained inside depth dungeons
Bastard of Loran Additional offering material Loran-series dungeons and late main-story areas

Additional Offerings#

When performing a Root Chalice rite you can add offerings, paying a higher challenge cost in exchange for better drop tendencies. Whether to add any, and how many, depends entirely on how confident the Hunter is in their own build.

Offering Effect Cost
Fetid Rite Enemy aggression and overall strength increase Bosses become harder to handle and the margin for error shrinks
Cursed Rite Further strengthens the dungeon rules; the Hunter’s maximum HP is halved The one-shot lethal window widens sharply and boss fights grow far more stressful
Stacking multiple offerings Drop tendencies stack Depth 5 with multiple offerings is the traditional way to farm top-tier Blood Gems

The Defiled Chalice dungeon already carries the halved-HP curse on its own; treat it as a rehearsal for multiple offerings: first test dodging and positioning in a low-depth dungeon with a fixed build, then consider challenging deep dungeons with offerings attached.

Dungeon-Exclusive Bosses#

The dungeons hold a large number of exclusive bosses never seen in the main story, all appearing in Pthumeru or Loran guise. Where a boss appears is tied to depth, but every layer of a given dungeon always ends in a boss room.

Boss Appearance tendency How to deal with it
Merciless Watchers Pthumeru series, all depths Several humanoid enemies press you together; pull them apart and break them one by one, never let them corner you
Watchdog of the Old Lords Pthumeru series Fire element; its breath and pounce have clear tells, and hugging its back is safer than keeping your distance
Keeper of the Old Lords Pthumeru series A caster wielding a flaming arcane sword; circle to its flank and interrupt the cast
Pthumerian Elder Pthumeru series, deeper layers Arcane sword rain and teleport combos; stay close and suppress its casting rhythm
Pthumerian Descendant Pthumeru series, deeper layers High-speed twin-blade combos with very fast startups; use gun parries and side steps to open windows
Beast-Possessed Soul Pthumeru and Loran series A fire beast type; watch for the sweeping flame spray and the backhop into a charge
Bloodletting Beast Pthumeru series, deeper layers; also a headless variant Huge frame and ferocious charges; keep circling sideways and avoid the grab throw
Undead Giant Loran series Variants carrying heavy weapons such as a cannon all differ; attack during the recovery after a shot or a swing
Abhorrent Beast Loran series Bolt element and extremely mobile; bring plenty of bolt resistance and antidotes
Rom, the Vacuous Spider Isz series Arcane meteor rain plus harassing spiderlings; clear the summons before attacking the body
Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos Isz series Alternating tentacle sweeps and arcane breath; the safest damage comes from hugging its flank
Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen Deepest layer of Great Pthumeru Ihyll The final objective of the dungeon system; defeating her grants the corresponding trophy

Blood Gem Output Tendencies#

The dungeons are the main source of Blood Gems for endgame builds: depth determines grade, and the chalice series determines elemental tendency.

Chalice series Blood Gem tendency Farming advice
Pthumeru Mainly physical Physical builds should repeatedly generate Root Chalices in the deeper Pthumeru layers
Loran Mainly fire and bolt Fire and bolt builds should prioritise the Loran series, using the Fetid Rite to raise the grade tendency
Isz Mainly arcane A mandatory farm for Arcane builds; deep Isz dungeons yield the best quality
Hintertomb Mainly early transitional grades Good for accumulating ritual materials and practice; not worth farming long term

The usual farming loop is: generate a dungeon with a Root Chalice, check the layout and boss of the first layer, delete and rebuild if it is not what you wanted, and push deeper only when satisfied. Ritual materials themselves also drop inside dungeons, so farming gems and stockpiling materials can go hand in hand.

Preparation and Tips#

Item Description
Weapon One fully upgraded main weapon is enough; dungeon enemies are vulnerable to bleed and elemental attacks, so match gem element to dungeon weakness
Resistance Guard against bolt and fire in Loran, against arcane in Isz, and watch for traps and poison areas in Pthumeru
Consumables Carry a full stock of Blood Vials, Quicksilver Bullets and Bone Marrow Ash; deep boss fights consume a great deal
Exploration Coffins, treasure chests and rare materials hide in the side passages; clear the edges before pushing to the next layer
Pacing In cursed dungeons where HP is halved, treat every tell as something that can take you out in one combo

Co-op and Sinister Chalices#

The dungeons support co-op summoning; Hunters can use the Small Resonant Bell inside a dungeon to call allies and push layers together. Dungeons generated by a Sinister Chalice are open hostile spaces instead, where other players can invade using the Sinister Resonant Bell. If you want the Hunter-versus-Hunter adversarial experience, the Sinister Chalice is the stage designed for it; if you only want to farm gems in peace, an ordinary Root Chalice is enough.

FAQ#

Q: Can dungeons be generated infinitely?

A: Yes. As long as you have enough materials, a Root Chalice can generate brand-new dungeon layouts again and again, and deleting an old dungeon does not stop you from creating it once more.

Q: Do I need to finish the main story before challenging dungeons?

A: No. The first chalice can be obtained in the middle of the main story, and Depth 1 and 2 dungeons can be pushed in parallel with the main story; Depth 4 and 5 are better left until your main-story build has taken shape.

Q: Can equipment and Blood Gems obtained in dungeons be taken back into the main story?

A: Yes. Weapons, Blood Gems and materials obtained in dungeons are fully usable in the main story, and vice versa.

Q: What if I do not have enough materials for a rite?

A: Ritual Blood and Tomb Mold are both graded by depth, so go straight into a dungeon of the matching depth and farm enemies and search chests; low-grade materials also accumulate in large amounts inside some dungeons.

Q: Are halved-HP dungeons worth doing?

A: Yes. Defiled Chalices and dungeons with the Cursed Rite have better drop tendencies and are the main source of top-tier Blood Gems, but be sure to steady your dodging and gun parries in ordinary dungeons first.

Q: Do dungeons have exclusive trophies?

A: Yes. Defeating deep targets such as Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen corresponds to dedicated trophies, and completing the dungeon system is a required step on the full-achievement route.

Summary#

Chalice Dungeons are the largest side system in Bloodborne: the four chalice series each extend into dungeons of a different style, and the Depth 1 to 5 gradient means there is always something to do at any stage of the main story. First use fixed chalices to unlock each series along the depth chain, then use Root Chalices together with additional offerings to generate dungeons repeatedly and farm the Blood Gems your build needs one by one. When you can stand in the deepest layer of Great Pthumeru Ihyll and face Queen Yharnam, this dungeon system is truly finished.
