Speedrun Techniques#
Speedrun Category Overview#
Speedruns in Black Myth: Wukong are mainly divided into the following common categories, each with different rules and goals. Newcomers are advised to pick an easy category first to learn the overall route, then gradually take on stricter rules.
| Category | Goal | Estimated Time | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any% | Clear the game as fast as possible | 7-12 hours | Normal |
| 100% | Full collectibles, all achievements | 25-35 hours | Extreme |
| All Bosses | Defeat every boss | 15-20 hours | Hard |
| No-Hit Run | Take no damage throughout | 20-30 hours | Extreme |
Core Speedrun Techniques#
Mastering the core techniques below is the foundation of becoming a speedrunner. These techniques do not exist in isolation; they usually have to be combined to actually compress your time.
Animation Cancel#
| Cancel Type | How to Perform | Time Saved | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roll cancel | Roll button + Attack button pressed together | 0.3-0.5 sec per use | Combo linking |
| Transformation cancel | Transformation button + Jump button | 0.5-1.0 sec per use | Fast form switching |
| Spell cancel | Spell button + Dodge button | 0.2-0.4 sec per use | Shortening spell recovery |
| Spirit cancel | Spirit button + Roll button | 0.4-0.7 sec per use | Moving fast after switching Spirits |
| Jump cancel | Jump button + Attack button | 0.3-0.5 sec per use | Aerial combo linking |
Animation canceling is one of the biggest barriers in speedrunning. Regular players chase damage, while speedrunners chase “no downtime” — every cancel helps you squeeze your inputs into the frame limit.
Movement Optimization#
In a speedrun, every second of movement optimization adds up to a huge difference. The main movement optimization techniques are listed below.
| Movement Technique | How to Perform | Speed Multiplier | Stamina Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slide | Roll + Forward + Jump | ×1.8 | Medium |
| Somersault Cloud chained jump | Somersault Cloud + Jump cancel | ×2.5 | High |
| Landing dash | Mid-air + Forward + Sprint | ×1.5 | Low |
| Wall rebound | Near a wall + Jump + Forward | ×1.3 | Low |
| Slope boost | Roll while going downhill | ×1.4 | None |
Chained Somersault Cloud jumps are the best choice for long dashes, but they require practiced rhythm. The slide is better suited to short-distance repositioning; together the two cover the vast majority of movement situations.
Chapter 1 Speedrun Route#
Chapter 1 is the foundation of speedrunning, and route optimization here is the most mature. An efficient route can keep Chapter 1 inside 25-30 minutes.
Timeline#
| Time | Event | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 | Start the game | Skip all cutscenes |
| 2:30 | First battle | Use Slide to close distance fast |
| 5:00 | Reach the Shrine | Activate it quickly and leave |
| 8:00 | First elite enemy | Quick kill or skip |
| 12:00 | Before Black Wind King | Prepare burst damage |
| 15:00 | Black Wind King fight | Aim to kill within 3 minutes |
| 20:00 | Hidden area | Can be skipped to save time |
| 28:00 | Chapter complete | Enter Chapter 2 |
Route Map#
Chapter 1 is all about cutting unnecessary fights and exploration, stopping only where items must be collected. Once you know the flow well, Chapter 1 results become very consistent.
| Area | Mandatory Items | Optional Items | Suggested Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting area | Starting weapon | None | 0-3 minutes |
| Foot of Black Wind Mountain | Will ×50 | Meditation spot | 3-8 minutes |
| Forest path | Key item | Spirit ×1 | 8-13 minutes |
| Black Wind Cave | Chapter key | Curio ×1 | 13-18 minutes |
| Boss area | None | None | 18-28 minutes |
The Chapter 1 route is already highly mature, and time fluctuations come mostly from how fast you kill Black Wind King. If your Chapter 1 is always running over, the problem is likely wandering around at the start and fighting elite enemies you did not need to fight.
Boss Quick-Kill Strategies#
Boss Quick-Kill Time Targets#
| Boss Name | Target Time | Recommended Build | Key Skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Wind King | 2:00 | Crit burst | Immobilize + full combo |
| Yellow Wind Sage | 3:00 | Fire-element counter | Guangzhi attrition + melee burst |
| Yaksha King | 2:30 | Water-element counter | Transformation tanking + counterattack |
| Purple Spider | 2:00 | Fire-element counter | Burst after purification |
| Red Boy | 3:00 | Ice-element counter | Chase + finisher |
| Stone Monkey | 4:00 | Balanced crit | Optimal DPS in all phases |
Black Wind King Quick-Kill Breakdown#
The core of a fast Black Wind King kill is using Immobilize in phase one to create a damage window, and using the Transformation form in phase two to tank key attacks before going all out on damage.
| Phase | Strategy | Target Time | Key Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1 transition | Dodge + chase | 30-60 seconds | Keep damage uninterrupted |
| P2 opening | Transformation tanking | 60-90 seconds | Ignore damage, full output |
| P2 finish | Crit finisher | 90-120 seconds | Make sure the crit lands |
Black Wind King’s second phase is a pure HP tank and goes down quite fast. The trick is to hold one Transformation for the stagger after its shapeshift ends, then land all of that damage on its weak point.
Skip Techniques#
| Skip Name | Time Saved | Condition | GL Legal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cliff skip | 3-5 minutes | Precise positioning | No |
| River shortcut | 2-3 minutes | Somersault Cloud | Yes |
| Mountain crevice push | 5-8 minutes | Specific spot + Roll | No |
| Boss trigger skip | 1-2 minutes | Key item order | Yes |
| Wall stall | 2-4 minutes | Precise clipping | No |
| Downhill boost | 0.5-1 minute | Parabolic jump + Sprint | Yes |
The legality of skip techniques differs between speedrun events, so follow the rules of whichever event you run in. Every usable legal shortcut is worth practicing — maximize the time saved within the rules.
Resource Management#
Resource management in a speedrun is completely different from normal play. You need to calculate the timing of every medicine and every spell precisely; any waste can decide the final few seconds.
Medicine Usage Priority#
| Priority | Medicine Type | When to Use | Quantity Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Attack boost medicine | Before a burst window | 1-2 bottles |
| 2 | Mana recovery medicine | Before key spells | 2-3 bottles |
| 3 | Health recovery medicine | At low HP or during combos | 8-10 bottles |
| 4 | Stamina boost medicine | Before a travel dash | 2-3 bottles |
| 5 | Defense boost medicine | Opening of a high-damage boss | 1-2 bottles |
Medicines have to be used where they count in a speedrun; there is no need to carry a full pack of spare items. When planning your route, convert every bottle you save into time gained — often saving two extra bottles is enough to shave off a dozen seconds.
Mana Allocation Strategy#
| Spell | Mana Cost | Usage Frequency | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immobilize | Medium | Key bursts | Very high |
| Guangzhi | Low | Sustained attrition | High |
| Somersault Cloud | Medium-high | Key movement | Medium |
| Transformation | High | Maximum burst | Situational |
Mana is a scarce resource in a speedrun. Every burst window bought with Immobilize is worth the investment; the rest of the time, get through levels with basic attacks and Guangzhi, and save your Mana for key fights.
Advanced Speedrun Techniques#
The following techniques suit experienced speedrunners and can compress clear time further.
RNG Manipulation#
| Manipulation Target | Method | Success Rate | Time Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drop type | Pre-record key points | 50% | 30-60 seconds |
| Enemy AI behavior | Specific positioning strategy | 70-80% | 5-15 seconds |
| Random event trigger | Timing + input | 40-50% | 1-5 minutes |
RNG manipulation has a high ceiling, but routes that rely on randomness also carry more risk. It is recommended to build a solid foundation with controllable, consistent damage first, then try gambling on random events in specific segments.
Frame Perfect Inputs#
Frame perfect inputs mean completing an action inside a precise 1-2 frame window, which enables special optimizations. These require a very high amount of practice and precise input timing.
| Technique | Frame Window | Difficulty | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| I-frame extension | 2 frames | Extreme | Breaking through full-screen attack hitboxes |
| Attack hitbox cancel | 1 frame | Extreme | Passing through damage zones |
| Aerial direction change | 3 frames | Hard | Quickly adjusting landing point |
| Combo interrupt | 2 frames | Hard | Canceling recovery to keep moving |
Frame perfect inputs are not for everyone; they demand extremely precise muscle memory. It is recommended to run the route stably first, then do targeted drills for these high-difficulty tricks.
Speedrun Practice Recommendations#
Becoming a speedrun master requires a systematic practice method. Below are practice recommendations by stage.
| Practice Stage | Focus | Suggested Duration | Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Basic controls, route memorization | 20-30 hours | Complete your first full speedrun |
| Improvement | Route optimization, boss quick kills | 50-80 hours | Beat your personal best |
| Advanced | Skip techniques, RNG manipulation | 100-150 hours | Approach top-tier times |
| Elite | Frame perfect inputs, full-run optimization | 200+ hours | Challenge the world record |
Practice quantity matters, but quality matters more. After every session, write down the mistakes you made and drill them specifically — that is far more efficient than mindlessly repeating full runs. Memorizing a run is not talent; it is built hour by hour.
Common Speedrun Mistakes#
Even experienced speedrunners will make careless mistakes out of impatience. The following mistake types appear most often; knowing them in advance and actively avoiding them saves a lot of practice time.
| Mistake Type | Occurrence Rate | Consequence | Prevention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Using medicine too early | High | Wasted recovery opportunity | Set clear usage rules |
| Route deviation | Medium | Wastes 1-3 minutes | Repeatedly practice a fixed route |
| Forgetting key items | Low | Requires backtracking, wasting time | Make a checklist |
| Stamina management error | Medium | Cannot perform key dodges | Watch the stamina bar position |
In speedruns, “mindset” is often underestimated; the chain reaction triggered by one mistake is deadlier than the mistake itself. Restore your rhythm immediately after a mistake and do not force record attempts — that is how you stay consistent.
Recommended Speedrun Tools#
The following tools can help you practice and record your speedruns better.
| Tool Name | Purpose | Platform | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mouse macro recorder | Record input sequences | PC | ★★★★☆ |
| In-game statistics | Check damage data | All platforms | ★★★☆☆ |
