Update Log#
This page compiles the patch history of Alan Wake 2 since launch on a strictly verifiable basis: only version numbers and dates backed by official announcements are included, changes are summarised qualitatively, and anything that cannot be verified word for word is stated as a criterion rather than invented as a statistic.
Version Number Formats#
Version numbers are written differently from one platform to another. These are platform differences within the same batch of updates, not two separate sets of patches:
- Console versions (PS5, Xbox) use a four-segment format such as 1.000.004;
- PC (Epic Games Store) uses a short format such as 1.0.x;
- From autumn 2024 onward, base game patches were unified at the 1.2.x series on most platforms.
When comparing how new a version is, go by the version number shown on your own platform’s store page.

Launch-Window Hotfixes (Late October to November 2023)#
The game launched on October 27, 2023. Within days of release, Remedy began pushing hotfixes to every platform, advancing console builds to 1.000.004~1.000.008 while the PC (Epic Games Store) build followed along the 1.0.x series. These hotfixes had one clear goal: to stamp out the worst problems blocking completion as fast as possible.
The November major patch that followed was visibly larger, officially described as more than 200 fixes across four main areas:
- Localisation: correcting errors and display problems in each language’s text;
- Audio: fixing missing sound effects and abnormal voice playback;
- Visuals: improving lighting, textures and overall stability;
- Quest blocking: resolving stuck sequences and unprogressive states, which was the most heavily reported category during the launch window.
The PC version supported ray reconstruction (DLSS 3.5) right at launch, and continued optimisation of its visual technology ran through the patches that followed.
Base Game Patch Series in 2024#
Spring: New Game Plus Mode#
In April 2024 the developers added New Game Plus: replaying the whole story while carrying over weapons and upgrades from the first run, bundled with the harder The Final Draft mode, which includes new story clues and ending-related content. The specific version number of this update follows the official announcement.
Autumn: The 1.2.x Series#
Around the launch of The Lake House expansion, base game patches moved into the 1.2.x series on a cadence of roughly every two to four weeks:
| Version | Release Date | Main Focus (Qualitative) |
|---|---|---|
| 1.2.3 | 2024-10-22/28 | Base game fixes and adjustments accompanying The Lake House launch, with platforms differing slightly on the date |
| 1.2.4 | 2024-11-18 | Stability fixes and general cleanup |
| 1.2.5 | 2024-11-26 | Adjusted the behaviour of thrown-type enemies, improved gyro aiming options, optimised shadows on high-end consoles (PS5 Pro), added Night Springs-themed content |
| 1.2.6 | 2024-12-03 | Routine fixes and stability improvements |
| 1.2.7 | 2024-12-16 | The last concentrated round of fixes of the year |
This series of patches applies to both the base game and the content of the two expansions. Item-by-item change lists belong to each update’s official patch notes, and this page does not reproduce them line by line.
How the Expansions and Base Game Patches Relate#
- Night Springs released on June 8, 2024, and The Lake House on October 22, 2024. Both expansions must be purchased and downloaded separately, stand as self-contained stories, and do not depend on any particular base game patch version to be accessible.
- Once an expansion is live, later base game patches cover its content too, so issues following The Lake House were continuously addressed across the 1.2.x series.
- There is therefore no need to overthink your update strategy: simply keep automatic updates on for the base game, and expansion issues get handled together with the base patches.
Platform Synchronisation Differences#
Update cadence is not perfectly identical across the three platforms, which is a normal part of the distribution process:
- PC (Epic Games Store): published directly by the publisher, so most patch batches land here first;
- PS5 and Xbox: patches need platform-holder approval before being pushed, so synchronisation usually completes within a few days, though individual patches can lag PC by several days depending on approval timing.
To judge whether a given patch has reached your platform, rely on the version number on the corresponding store page. The dates in this timeline are stated as an overall picture, with one to several days of variation between individual platforms.
How to Get Updates#
| Platform | Update Method | Manual Check Path |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Runs in the background once automatic updates are on | Settings → System → System Software → Update |
| Xbox | Runs in the background once automatic updates are on | My games & apps → Manage → Updates |
| PC (Epic Games Store) | Automatic by default | Library → select this game → Check for update |
Install Size and Update Footprint#
First-time download size varies across platforms depending on version and how many expansions you own, and console versions need extra room to buffer the install. The following are criteria only; always treat the store page as authoritative:
- PC: the Epic Games Store system requirements page lists the current free space needed. Before buying, make sure you have room clearly above the stated minimum;
- PS5 / Xbox: go by the store page capacity information; installing expansions increases the footprint further;
- Update headroom: before installing any large patch, keep plenty of temporary space free (as a rule of thumb, at least a third of the game’s current size). Running out of space is the most common cause of failed updates on consoles.
Frequently Asked Questions#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do updates delete my save? | No. Saves are separate from the game files, and normal updates do not affect them. It is still wise to keep a cloud save or manual backup before any major update |
| Do expansions need to be downloaded separately? | Yes. After purchase, confirm installation manually in the store or library; base updates never pull in expansions you have not bought |
| Do I need to restart my device after updating? | Consoles generally do not need a full system restart, but you do need to relaunch the game; the same applies on PC |
| Can I still use community mods after updating? | Major updates often require mods to be updated to match, so disable them before updating and wait for authors to publish compatibility notes |
| Why is my version number different from my friend’s? | Usually it is a platform formatting difference (four-segment on console, short format on PC), or a few days’ gap in rollout. Go by the store page |
| How much space should I reserve for updates? | See the “Install Size and Update Footprint” section above; the core criterion is the store page figure plus plenty of temporary buffer |
Official Information Channels#
- Remedy’s official website and forums carry the patch announcements that are the first-hand source for version numbers and change lists;
- Each platform’s store page update notes list the main fixes in the current patch;
- This timeline is updated along with official announcements. Whenever version numbers or dates conflict, the official announcement wins.
