Builds Guide#

A Nioh 2 “build” combines three customizable dimensions: guardian spirit attribute (deciding the Brute / Feral / Phantom forms of your Burst Counter and Yokai Shift), Soul Core loadout (cap 2, deciding Yokai Skills), and Kodama blessings (deciding drop income). This page turns the verified mechanics into an actionable build framework.

The Three Build Pillars#

Pillar Options What it decides
Guardian spirit attribute Brute / Feral / Phantom The form of Burst Counter and Yokai Shift
Soul Cores Up to 2 equipped Yokai Skills + stat bonuses + guardian spirit affix bonuses
Kodama blessings Five kinds, one at a time Drop rates for the matching category

Step 1: Pick Your Type (Brute / Feral / Phantom)#

The guardian spirit attribute is the starting point of every build — both the Burst Counter and the Yokai Shift split into Brute, Feral and Phantom by attribute:

Type Combat leaning Pairing thought
Brute Strong interruption, frontal pressure Pair a Feral skill for mobility
Feral Long i-frames, hit-and-run counters Pair a Phantom skill for a barrier
Phantom Defense-leaning, steady counters Pair a Feral skill for offense

There is no standard answer to typing: the counter’s payoff (interrupting enemies, hard-cutting max Ki / yokai power, opening the finisher on an empty cap) depends on timing reads, and timing reads depend on feel. Swapping types often wrecks muscle memory — settle one type before talking builds.

Step 2: Divide the Two Soul Core Slots#

Soul Cores equip up to 2; split the two slots by function:

  1. One offense, one defense: one slot for a Feral skill (afterimage dash, deflects attacks, restores power, auto-tracks), the other for a Phantom skill (shield barrier, makes enemies cower and restores power on good timing);
  2. “Actually landing it” is the premise: both Phantom and Feral refund power on successful use — pick the type you can land reliably, not the one with the better paper numbers;
  3. Read the affixes when choosing cores: Soul Cores also carry guardian spirit affix bonuses; the specific percentages of those affixes are not covered by official or verifiable sources — defer to what the game displays.

Step 3: Configure Blessings#

The five Kodama blessing caps (verified):

Blessing Kodama form Cap
Amrita Miko +25%
Equipment Samurai +5%
Soul Cores Yamabushi +5%
Medicine Apothecary +25%
Materials Hunter +25%

Only one blessing is active at a time, and switching costs nothing. Run Yamabushi while farming cores, Apothecary while farming elixirs — switch freely with your current goal. The more Kodama you collect, the higher the bonus climbs, so Kodama collection is itself part of building.

A Ground-Level Baseline Build#

Combining the three pillars, here is a conservative, reliable baseline (all built on verified mechanics):

  1. Start with the Brute attribute: strong interruption and high fault tolerance;
  2. Soul Core slot A: Phantom: the shield barrier answers assault-heavy scenarios and refunds power on success;
  3. Soul Core slot B: Feral: the afterimage dash covers target-switching and pursuit while deflecting attacks and restoring power;
  4. Switch blessings by phase: run Amrita or medicine (+25% kinds) while growing, Yamabushi while farming cores;
  5. Reserve unpurified cores for the Sudama: the only way to obtain Kodama Soul Cores;
  6. The counter is always armed: every build’s core payoff chain is “Burst Counter interruption → cap drained → finisher”.

Baseline Configuration by Type#

Three baseline builds keyed to the guardian spirit attribute (all on verified mechanics):

Build direction Attribute Counter usage Core slot A Core slot B
Frontal pressure Brute Absorb big swings, strong interruption Phantom skill (barrier counter) Feral skill (pursuit)
Hit-and-run Feral Weave into combos, long i-frames Feral skill (afterimage dash) Phantom skill (defensive backstop)
Steady counter Phantom Defense-leaning, punish openings Phantom skill (make them cower) Feral skill (window pursuit)

All three share one payoff chain: Burst Counter interruption → hard cut to max Ki / yokai power → finisher on an empty cap — they differ only in how they reach the stun window.

Validating a Build in the Dark Realm#

Whether a build passes can be tested in one Dark Realm visit: inside, humans are greatly weakened while yokai rapidly regenerate and strengthen, human-side moves are suppressed, and income leans on Soul Cores and Yokai Skills. If you feel powerless inside the Dark Realm, the Soul Core slots need rework — that is the watershed between Shiftling builds and pure-human play.

Blessings by Build Phase#

Blessing choices keyed to build phases:

Phase Main activity Recommended blessing
Growth Main story, heavy consumable use Medicine (Apothecary, +25%) or Amrita (Miko, +25%)
Core farming Collecting Yokai Skill materials Soul Cores (Yamabushi, +5%)
Gear refresh New weapons and armor Equipment (Samurai, +5%)
Material crunch Crafting and consumption Materials (Hunter, +25%)

The Collection-Building Loop#

A final reminder: building doesn’t live only in the status screen. Kodama collection determines blessing ratios, Sudama trades determine Kodama Soul Core acquisition (unpurified cores are the sole currency), and the shrine is the entry point for all of it — a periodic shrine audit of blessings and cores is the fixed closing move of this game’s build loop.

Not Covered Statement#

  • Equipment affix and set bonus lists;
  • The specific percentage bonuses of guardian spirit affixes;
  • Attribute point values and respec rules;
  • Per-weapon build data.

None of the above is covered by official or verifiable sources, and this site does not speculate — defer to actual in-game affixes and performance.
