Beginner’s Guide#
Nioh 2 is developed by Team NINJA and published by Koei Tecmo, the sequel to Nioh. A newcomer’s first obstacle is not the controls but understanding the “Shiftling” identity — this page runs from protagonist setup to core mechanics to help you find footing in the warring states.
Meet Your Character: Hidechiyo the Shiftling#
The protagonist “Hidechiyo” is a half-human half-yokai Shiftling, with customizable gender and appearance — which also affects some characters’ looks. The Shiftling identity sets the tone of the whole game:
- Fight with weapons in human form;
- Unleash the Burst Counter and Yokai Skills with yokai power;
- Perform the Yokai Shift — the first game’s guardian spirit ultimate, the Living Weapon, has become this transformation.
Lesson One: The Three Burst Counter Types#
The Burst Counter is the game’s most important new mechanic: while slipping into the afterimage, let the enemy’s attack land on the afterimage — success interrupts the enemy for a stun and slashes their max Ki / yokai power, and emptying the cap opens the finisher. Counters split into three types by guardian spirit attribute:
| Type | Trait | Newcomer advice |
|---|---|---|
| Brute | Strong interruption | Intuitive reactions; best for learning the rhythm first |
| Feral | Long i-frames | Flexible reads; higher ceiling once advanced |
| Phantom | Defense-leaning | Steady; suits defensive players |
No type is strictly better — pick the one matching your reaction habits rather than hunting “the strongest type”.
Lesson Two: Soul Cores#
Defeating yokai yields Soul Cores; equipping them grants that yokai’s Yokai Skill, up to 2 equipped. Newcomer keys:
- Fill both slots: an empty Soul Core slot is combat power left on the table;
- Yokai Skills cost yokai power: the Phantom type (shield barrier, makes enemies cower and restores power) and Feral type (afterimage dash, deflects attacks, restores power, auto-tracks) both refund power on successful use — dare to use them and the resource loop runs;
- Soul Cores carry stat and guardian-spirit affix bonuses: choosing a Yokai Skill is also choosing passive income.
Lesson Three: Understand the Dark Realm#
The Dark Realm is a black world overlaying our own, and inside it the rules change: humans are greatly weakened while yokai rapidly regenerate health and grow stronger. The most common newcomer mistake inside the Dark Realm is stalling — grinding health down in a domain where yokai constantly heal is always negative value. The Shiftling’s answer is to draw on Soul Cores and finish the fight quickly with yokai power.
Collection Basics: Kodama and Sudama#
| Target | Newcomer notes |
|---|---|
| Kodama | 225 in the Complete Edition (150 base + 25 per DLC across three), across 7 regions; collect them and choose a blessing at shrines to raise drop rates |
| Kodama blessings | Five kinds — Amrita (Miko, cap +25%), equipment (Samurai, +5%), Soul Cores (Yamabushi, +5%), medicine (Apothecary, +25%), materials (Hunter, +25%) — only one active at a time |
| Sudama | The purple special Kodama, trades items of equal quality; never give it salt, Sacred Water or Purification Talismans — anything blessed by the gods — or it will call down lightning and strike your protagonist dead |
The Sudama taboo is among the most common “causes of death” early on: before trading with a purple Kodama, check what you’re about to throw.
Newcomer Action Checklist#
Complete the following in order to move smoothly through the opening:
- Customize your protagonist: gender and appearance are yours to set — pick the look you like;
- Choose a guardian spirit attribute: Brute / Feral / Phantom shapes your Burst Counter and Yokai Shift; try Brute first to learn the rhythm;
- Learn the Burst Counter: let attacks hit the afterimage instead of dodging away — this is the game’s biggest feel difference from its peers;
- Fill the Soul Core slots: equip the first core you get, and keep both slots producing;
- Collect every Kodama you see: blessing bonuses scale with your collection count — earlier is better;
- Check your inventory before the Sudama: never throw salt, Sacred Water or Purification Talismans;
- Fight fast inside the Dark Realm: once in, lean on Soul Cores and Yokai Skills to end it quickly;
- Don’t grind on human moves: human abilities are greatly weakened inside the Dark Realm — Yokai Skills are the main damage.
Yokai Power and Skills, Fast#
The Shiftling’s power flows from yokai power; three rules cover the early game:
- Yokai Skills cost power: equip Soul Cores (cap 2) to use that yokai’s skill;
- Success refunds power: the Phantom type (shield barrier, cowering enemies) and Feral type (afterimage dash, deflect, auto-track) both restore power on success — the bolder you are, the more resource you command;
- The Burst Counter also runs on power: a successful counter’s payoff (interruption + a hard cut to max Ki / yokai power) far exceeds whiffing it — use it as an active skill.
Common Newcomer Errors and Corrections#
| Common error | Correct play |
|---|---|
| Rolling away from every red glow | Use the Burst Counter to let the attack hit the afterimage — far greater payoff |
| Equipping only one Soul Core | The cap is 2; an empty slot is waste |
| Chipping health with human moves in the Dark Realm | Humans are weakened and yokai constantly heal inside — finish it fast |
| Throwing salt / Sacred Water / Purification Talismans to the Sudama | These “god-blessed items” summon the lightning |
| Collecting Kodama only in the current region | Kodama count accumulates across regions; blessings read the total |
| Locking one blessing forever | The five blessings rotate one at a time — switch by farming target |
Collection Milestones#
Collection checkpoints to track against early on (all verified):
| Milestone | Content |
|---|---|
| First Soul Core | Equipping it grants a Yokai Skill — the starting point of Shiftling play |
| First few Kodama | Shrines unlock blessing selection; try medicine (Apothecary) or materials (Hunter) first |
| First Sudama | Check your bag; trade worn gear for equal-quality items |
| First Dark Realm | Confirm your Soul Cores are set and finish fast |
