World Exploration#

World Exploration

The world of The Binding of Isaac is made up of multiple chapters — each chapter offers several route options leading to different bosses and endings. Understanding route choice is the key to efficient runs

Basic Routes#

Chapter Floors
Chapter 1 Basement / Cellar / Burning Basement Monstro / Gemini / Duke of Flies, etc. Opening — mainly collect basic items
Chapter 2 Caves / Catacombs / Flooded Caves Dingle / Gurglings / Rag Mega / Mom’s Heart? Chapter 2 always ends into “Mom’s Room” — first-stage boss fight

Chapter 4 Womb / Utero / Scarred Womb Mom’s Heart / It Lives! Defeating Mom’s Heart 10 times unlocks the ??? (Womb 2) route

Alternate Routes#

After defeating Mom, you face a route choice — it decides where your run ultimately goes

Route A: Cathedral (Angel Route)#

Condition Entry method
The beam of light entered after defeating Mom — has a chance to appear when Mom is defeated (affected by Angel Room odds). Or use “teleport” type items
Floors Cathedral → Chest (after defeating ???)
Final boss Blue Baby (Cathedral boss), ???/Blue Baby? (The Chest final boss)

Route B: Sheol (Devil Route)#

Condition Entry method
The red door entered after defeating Mom — or use the “We Need To Go Deeper!” item
Floors Sheol → Dark Room (after defeating The Lamb)

Secret Room Position Patterns per Floor#

Floor Typical position Notes
Basement/Cellar/Burning Basement Center of the map — often near the starting room Each floor’s secret room can shift — but the center area has the highest chance
Caves/Catacombs/Flooded Caves Map edges — within reach of other rooms A long blank gap between 2 rooms very likely hides a secret room
Depths/Necropolis Irregular — try several spots with bombs Secret room positions here are the least predictable
Womb Near the Boss room — the Womb usually gets an extra secret room The Womb’s Super Secret Room is also near the Boss room

Special Door Types#

Door type Key/condition Leads to
Normal door Opens automatically — after clearing the room’s enemies Adjacent rooms
Locked door Needs 1 key Treasure room (usually)
Golden locked door Needs 1 Golden Key Golden treasure room
Curse door Costs 1 red heart to enter Curse room (item inside)
Devil door Chance after a boss fight — heart trade Devil Room (trade items)
Angel door Appears instead of the Devil door — needs a key Angel Room (free item)

Super secret door Bombed open — must be at a specific spot Super Secret Room
Boss Rush door Reach within 20 (15 on Hard) minutes — opens automatically Boss Rush challenge
Hush door Defeat Mom’s Heart within 30 minutes — appears in the Chest “after” ??? Hush fight

Practical Map Tips#

Tip Notes
Full clear vs speedrun If the goal is completion — full clears (all rooms) are safer. If the goal is Boss Rush or Hush — skip unnecessary fights along the way
Devil Room vs Angel Room If you get strong items on floor 1 (like Brimstone) — later floors can ignore Devil Rooms. With a weak build — rely on Devil Room trades to come back
Greed Mode map Greed Mode maps are much smaller than normal — but waves are denser. Prioritize area damage and auto-attacks
Repentance map Repentance adds more room types and route choices — maps are bigger and more complex. Bring extra bombs
