Daily Run#
The Daily Run is a special online mode of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth: a new random seed rotates in every day at midnight server time, every player worldwide faces exactly the same map layout, item pools and enemy configuration that day, and results are counted on the same global leaderboard, ranked by score. If you want to face other players on a fully even playing field, this is the game’s official stage for it.
In regular play, every run’s map and items are randomly generated and luck differs from person to person; the Daily Run nails down the “luck” variable - everyone gets the same hand, and the contest is who plays it better.
Basic rules#
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Shared seed | All players worldwide use the same seed on a given day - map, item pools and enemy configuration are identical |
| Daily rotation | A new seed rotates in at midnight (server time) each day, refreshing that day’s challenge |
| Today only | You can only play the current day’s challenge - past dailies cannot be replayed |
| First completion only | Each player’s result for the day counts only from the first completion - replaying never refreshes the score |
| Mods banned | No mods (Mod) of any kind may be used while playing, and external seeds cannot be entered |
| Fixed goal | The objective is set by that day’s run, usually defeating that run’s Boss |
What “first completion only” means#
This is the biggest difference from regular play. In a normal run you can quit and restart at any time; in the Daily Run, your first completion of the day is your final result - there is no “scout the run casually first, then replay it properly for a high score”. So treat every run as your official attempt: how to plan the route, which items to take and how to manage your health are best decided before you step through the first door.
Why mods and external seeds are banned#
A shared seed only works if “everyone starts from the same line”. If players could enter seeds of their choosing, or use mods to change game behavior, the leaderboard would lose its meaning. Both are therefore explicitly banned in the Daily Run - which also means you cannot “preview” the day’s map with seed tools in advance; everyone faces exactly the same information.
What a fixed seed changes#
A fixed seed is not just a restriction - it also changes the ecosystem of play:
- Comparisons become meaningful: score differences can be attributed entirely to execution and decisions, not luck.
- The community shares a topic: players worldwide are discussing the same run of the same day; guides and complaints all point to the same map.
- Good routes are copyable: a route proven to work that day can be walked by anyone, drastically lowering the learning cost.
What determines your score#
The Daily Run score is a composite of multiple dimensions, including kills, exploration, item collection and time. The official side has never published the exact weight of each item, so any specific number claiming “X is worth Y points” is unreliable - in-game scoring is the only authority.
| Scoring dimension | Impact on results |
|---|---|
| Kills | Enemies cleared are a major source of points; skipped rooms mean voluntarily giving up those points |
| Exploration | Visiting more rooms and covering more area usually means a higher exploration score |
| Item collection | The number of items taken counts toward the result; ignoring item rooms costs you |
| Time | Faster completions usually score better; dithering and hesitation carry a cost |
One reminder: these dimensions are not a simple sum, and their relative weights have no official data behind them. Rather than obsessing over exact values, spend the effort on “doing well in every dimension”.
How the leaderboard works#
Daily Run results feed a global leaderboard ranked by score. Three things are worth making clear:
- Rankings reflect score only: the leaderboard is a comparison of everyone’s results for that day, nothing more.
- First completion only: what hangs on the leaderboard is your first-completion result; later replays never overwrite it.
- No rank rewards: there is no reward ladder in-game such as “top 1% gets an achievement, top 10% gets a trinket” - the leaderboard exists purely to compare results; chasing it yields fun and bragging rights, never tangible rewards.
In other words, the leaderboard is a pure honor arena. Treat it as a daily global exam: once you hand in your paper everything resets, and at midnight tomorrow a fresh paper waits.
Core ways to raise your score#
Since score is jointly determined by kills, exploration, item collection and time, the path to a better score is clear. Three lines of attack are widely proven in community practice: prioritize exploration, take less damage, and rush the Boss. They do not conflict - strong runs usually manage all three at once.
Prioritize exploration#
Exploration pays multiple ways: more rooms mean more enemies to kill and more items to take, feeding the kill and collection dimensions directly. Once you have a map-type item, plan a route that “backs up less and covers more rooms” instead of blindly beelining the Boss. Of course exploration presumes survival - a room that will probably cost you health may be worth skipping.
Take less damage#
Damage is more than lost health: it derails the rhythm of the whole run - detours to find healing, hesitating over Devil Room deals, entering the Boss room at low health and playing timid - all of it lands on your final score. What top-ranked players share is usually “saving every red heart with positioning”, not “shooting harder”. Only with a stable health line do you get to talk about exploration and speed.
Rush the Boss#
Time is one of the scoring dimensions; the longer you drag, the worse the result. Each floor’s Boss fight is the biggest chunk of time: plan positioning and damage rhythm before entering, and learn the Boss’s attack patterns - that investment pays better than back-and-forth in normal rooms. Exploration and speed are not in conflict: take every room worth taking, then leave without lingering.
Treat the first run as your real attempt#
Because only the first completion counts, the “replay and optimize” route is sealed off. That defines the right mindset for the Daily Run: play every run as your only chance. Better a conservative, steady first attempt than gambling at a critical moment - a lost gamble leaves no second chance.
How the Daily Run differs from regular play#
| Aspect | Regular play | Daily Run |
|---|---|---|
| Seed source | Randomly generated each run | Uniformly assigned by the system, identical worldwide |
| External seed entry | Up to the player | Banned |
| Mods | Supported in regular PC play | Fully disabled |
| Result recording | Not counted in global rankings | Counts on the global leaderboard, first completion only |
| Play window | A new run anytime | That day only - expired dailies cannot be replayed |
| Challenge goal | Route and endpoint of your choosing | Fixed by the run, usually defeating that run’s Boss |
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When does the daily rotate? | A new seed rotates in at midnight (server time) each day - exact timing depends on your platform’s update schedule |
| Can I replay yesterday’s challenge? | No - only the current day’s challenge is playable; historical dailies cannot be replayed |
| Can I retry? | You can replay the day’s challenge, but only the first completion counts - replaying never raises the score |
| Can I use mods? | No - the Daily Run disables all mods, and external seeds cannot be entered |
| Is there an official score formula? | No - the score is a composite of kills, exploration, item collection, time and more; exact weights are unpublished |
| Do leaderboard ranks give rewards? | No - no rewards are granted by rank in-game; the leaderboard exists only to compare results |
| What is the challenge goal? | Fixed by the run, usually defeating that run’s Boss - defer to the run’s actual requirement |
| When is my result locked in? | At your first completion of the day; after the midnight rotation a new day’s challenge begins |
A final thought#
The appeal of the Daily Run is not any reward but the ritual of “the whole world is playing the same map today” - you and a player on the other side of the planet hold the same seed and the same item pools, and nobody can blame luck. A bad run today resets to zero at midnight tomorrow; that light, low-stakes rhythm is exactly what makes it a good daily habit.
That said, results really are swayed by the day’s seed: when the Boss is unfamiliar or the item pools uncooperative, do not force a high score - treating it as a fixed daily warm-up run is actually the easiest way to stay sharp long term.
