Ending Branches#
Black Myth: Wukong has only two endings across the whole game: the Normal Ending, reached without completing the hidden questline, and the True Ending, reached after obtaining the Great Sage’s “Mind”. There is only one dividing line between them — whether the Destined One holds that “Mind”, one of the Great Sage’s six senses, when defeating the Great Sage’s Broken Body in Chapter 6.
One widespread claim needs correcting first: it has circulated online that the game has “four endings”, listing ending names such as “Destiny Exhausted”, “Myth Continued”, and “Suffering of Samsara”. None of these are accurate — there is no third or fourth ending in the game, and no ending carries these names. This page follows the actual in-game mechanics and has been fully corrected to the two-ending account.
The Great Sage’s six senses (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind) are scattered along the pilgrimage road: the main-story final boss of each of the first five chapters corresponds to one of them, while the sixth, “Mind”, is not in the main story — it is guarded by Yang Jian in the hidden map of Mount Mei. Whether or not you obtain this “Mind” directly determines which ending you get.
Ending Overview#
| Ending | Trigger | Final Scene |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Ending | Did not obtain the “Mind Root”; the Great Sage’s “Mind” is missing | The Destined One puts on the Golden Circlet, enters samsara, and sleeps inside the stone egg |
| True Ending | Obtained the “Mind Root”; the six senses are reunited | The Destined One refuses the Golden Circlet, the Great Sage is unbound, and a new cutscene plays |
Neither ending has any manual option at the ending sequence: after defeating the Great Sage’s Broken Body, the story automatically plays the corresponding ending based on whether you hold the “Mind Root”. The player cannot press a button at the end to choose “wear” or “refuse”.
Normal Ending#
Requirements#
| Condition | Description |
|---|---|
| Clear the main story | Advance through the six chapters in order and defeat the final boss of Chapter 6, the Great Sage’s Broken Body |
| Did not obtain the “Mind Root” | Did not complete the hidden side-quest chain, or did not challenge Yang Jian at Mount Mei |
| No other requirements | Full collection is not needed; does not depend on any equipment, Spirit, or Curio |
As long as you have not obtained the “Mind Root”, no matter how many side quests you did or how many items you collected, defeating the Great Sage’s Broken Body in Chapter 6 leads to the Normal Ending. In other words, this is the ending that the vast majority of players reach naturally on their first playthrough.
Ending Content#
Although the Destined One defeats the Great Sage’s Broken Body, he is missing the “Mind” among the six senses. In the epilogue, the Old Monkey places the Golden Circlet on the Destined One — the shackle of the past falls once more upon a new “Wukong”. The Destined One has neither the power nor the will to refuse, and can only follow his predetermined fate into samsara, sleeping once again inside the stone egg on Mount Huaguo.
| Story Point | Description |
|---|---|
| The missing “Mind” | A Destined One without the “Mind Root” is only a successor with an empty shell |
| The Golden Circlet returns | The Golden Circlet is not thrown off; the bond is passed on to the next “Destined One” |
| Samsara closed loop | The story returns to its starting point, hinting that the next journey to obtain “Mind” will continue |
| New Game+ | After clearing the game you can start New Game+, carrying over your growth to keep playing |
True Ending#
The True Ending is the game’s only ending branch, and the most complete narrative conclusion. It does not depend on playthrough count or full collection — only on one clear hidden side-quest chain: the four hidden maps, the melon field side quest in Chapter 3, Yang Jian at Mount Mei, and finally the rematch against the Great Sage’s Broken Body.
Requirements Overview#
- Complete the four hidden maps: Old Guanyin Temple (Chapter 1), Sahali Kingdom (Chapter 2), Hidden: Ziyun Mountain (Chapter 4), Bishui Cave (Chapter 5), defeating the corresponding hidden bosses within them.
- Complete the melon field side quest in the Lesser Western Heaven of Chapter 3; Maitreya Buddha opens the hidden map Mount Mei.
- Enter Mount Mei and defeat Yang Jian — a three-phase, high-intensity boss fight in which he summons the Four Heavenly Kings and uses Fǎ Tiān Xiàng Dì during the second phase. Victory grants the “Mind Root”, one of the six senses.
- Carry the “Mind Root” into the rematch with the Great Sage’s Broken Body in Chapter 6. After winning, the Destined One refuses the Golden Circlet, the six senses are reunited, the Great Sage is unbound, and this ending plays an additional new cutscene.
True Ending Checklist#
Each of the four hidden maps and the melon field side quest is unlocked differently; the table below lists the check points item by item. Details on the characters, items, and paths of each side quest can be found in Hidden Secrets and Map Navigation; these may be adjusted slightly with version updates, so the in-game guidance is authoritative.
| Check Item | Chapter | Key Boss | Check Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Guanyin Temple | Chapter 1 Black Wind Mountain | Elder Jinchi | Ring the three great bells of Black Wind Mountain to enter the hidden temple, then defeat Elder Jinchi |
| Sahali Kingdom | Chapter 2 Yellow Wind Ridge | Fuban | Unlocked after advancing the Yellow-Robed Squire’s side quest; defeat Fuban beneath the yellow sands |
| Melon field side quest | Chapter 3 Lesser Western Heaven | Bamboo-Hat Warrior | Complete the side quest at the pagoda melon field and defeat the Bamboo-Hat Warrior; Maitreya Buddha appears and opens the entrance to Mount Mei |
| Hidden: Ziyun Mountain | Chapter 4 Webbed Hollow | Dark Moon Demon Lord | Enter after completing the corresponding hidden side quest in the Webbed Hollow; defeat the Dark Moon Demon Lord |
| Bishui Cave | Chapter 5 Flaming Mountain | Water-Avoiding Golden-Eyed Beast | Enter after completing the corresponding hidden side quest on Flaming Mountain; defeat the Water-Avoiding Golden-Eyed Beast |
| Yang Jian at Mount Mei | Hidden map Mount Mei | Yang Jian | Three-phase boss fight; phase two summons the Four Heavenly Kings and uses Fǎ Tiān Xiàng Dì; victory grants the “Mind Root” |
| Rematch with the Great Sage’s Broken Body | Chapter 6 Mount Huaguo | Great Sage’s Broken Body | Defeat the Great Sage’s Broken Body while holding the “Mind Root”; the Destined One refuses the Golden Circlet and enters the True Ending |
How to Beat Yang Jian at Mount Mei#
Yang Jian is one of the strongest hidden bosses in the game; it is recommended to challenge him only after your Foundation, equipment, and understanding of the staff stances are all fully developed. The fight has three phases:
| Phase | Combat Form | Key Response |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Yang Jian’s base form, a head-on duel of spear strikes and staff blocks | Learn his attack rhythm and keep the spacing duel between the Pillar Stance and the Thrust Stance |
| Phase 2 | Summons the Four Heavenly Kings for support, and uses Fǎ Tiān Xiàng Dì to grow to giant size | Deal with the interference of the Heavenly Kings on the field first; the ground slam and horizontal sweep of the giant phase have huge range, and the close-range damage windows are concentrated at the tail end of his moves |
| Phase 3 | Final form; combo density and threat increase across the board | Enter this phase with your Gourd and life-saving resources intact; it comes down to error tolerance and patience |
The specific moves and numbers of each phase follow their actual in-game performance. Victory grants the “Mind Root”, the key to the True Ending.
Chapter 6: Refusing the Golden Circlet#
After defeating the Great Sage’s Broken Body while holding the “Mind Root”, the Old Monkey in the epilogue still offers the Golden Circlet — but this time, the Destined One raises a hand and refuses. The six senses are reunited, the Great Sage is no longer bound, and the game plays a new cutscene that cannot be seen in the Normal Ending; the question of “Mind” that runs through the whole story is resolved here.
Two Endings Compared#
| Comparison | Normal Ending | True Ending |
|---|---|---|
| Prerequisite | Did not obtain the “Mind Root” | Four hidden maps + melon field side quest + defeat Yang Jian to obtain the “Mind Root” |
| Full collection required? | No | No |
| Multiple playthroughs required? | No | Can be achieved in a single playthrough |
| Final interaction | The Destined One puts on the Golden Circlet | The Destined One refuses the Golden Circlet |
| State of the six senses | Missing “Mind”; the six senses are incomplete | The six senses are reunited |
| Where the ending leads | Enters samsara, sleeps inside the stone egg | The Great Sage is unbound |
| Additional scene | None | A new cutscene of the Great Sage breaking free |
| New Game+ | Unlocked after clearing the game | Unlocked after clearing the game |
Common Misconceptions Clarified#
| Common Misconception | Actual Mechanic |
|---|---|
| There are four endings | There are only two; ending names such as “Suffering of Samsara” and “Myth Continued” do not exist in the game |
| The ending is decided by a dialogue option at the ending sequence | Neither ending has a manual choice; it is decided automatically by whether you hold the “Mind Root” |
| The True Ending requires collecting all Spirits, Vessels, and Curios | The ending check looks only at hidden side-quest progress; full collection is unrelated to the ending |
| Defeating Shi Gandang or collecting the Buddha’s Eye Beads affects the ending | Shi Gandang is a hidden boss of Chapter 2 and has no connection at all to the ending check |
| The True Ending can only be unlocked in New Game+ | Following all the hidden side-quest conditions in a single playthrough is enough to reach the True Ending |
| You can press a button to choose to wear or refuse the Golden Circlet | The epilogue plays automatically and cannot be manually intervened with |
Route Planning Suggestions#
The two endings cannot both be experienced in a single playthrough: once you have obtained the “Mind Root”, the ending of that playthrough is fixed as the True Ending. To see both endings, you need to plan two different save routes.
Route 1: Go Straight for the True Ending in the First Playthrough#
| Step | Timing | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Chapter 1 Black Wind Mountain | Ring the three great bells and enter the Old Guanyin Temple to defeat Elder Jinchi |
| Step 2 | Chapter 2 Yellow Wind Ridge | Advance the Yellow-Robed Squire’s side quest and enter the Sahali Kingdom to defeat Fuban |
| Step 3 | Chapter 3 Lesser Western Heaven | Complete the melon field side quest and defeat the Bamboo-Hat Warrior so that Maitreya Buddha opens Mount Mei |
| Step 4 | Chapter 4 Webbed Hollow | Enter Hidden: Ziyun Mountain and defeat the Dark Moon Demon Lord |
| Step 5 | Chapter 5 Flaming Mountain | Enter Bishui Cave and defeat the Water-Avoiding Golden-Eyed Beast |
| Step 6 | Once your Foundation and equipment are fully developed | Head to Mount Mei, defeat Yang Jian, and obtain the “Mind Root” |
| Step 7 | Chapter 6 Mount Huaguo | Defeat the Great Sage’s Broken Body and automatically enter the True Ending |
Tip: The melon field side quest can be completed as early as Chapter 3; once Mount Mei is open there is no need to rush into the fight with Yang Jian. He is a hard battle — leave him until your equipment is developed in Chapters 5 and 6, and both your odds and the experience will be much better.
Route 2: See the Normal Ending First, Then Complete the True Ending#
| Step | Description |
|---|---|
| Step 1 | Go straight through the main story in the first playthrough, skip the hidden side quests above, and experience the Normal Ending first |
| Step 2 | Start New Game+ after clearing the game; growth such as Foundation and equipment carries over according to the in-game rules (the specifics follow the actual game) |
| Step 3 | In New Game+, redo the hidden side-quest chain as in Route 1; clear the game after defeating Yang Jian to reach the True Ending |
Tip: Progress on hidden side quests and hidden maps is calculated per playthrough; the cross-playthrough carry-over rules follow the actual game. If you have already defeated Yang Jian in a playthrough, that playthrough’s ending can only be the True Ending — to see the Normal Ending you need a separate save route in which you have never challenged Yang Jian. Players planning to experience both endings across two playthroughs are advised to back up their save before starting a new cycle, to avoid overwriting it.
Side-Quest Progress Self-Check#
Before fighting Yang Jian, you can check the table below to confirm whether the hidden chain is complete:
| Self-Check Question | Corresponding Condition |
|---|---|
| Have all three great bells of Black Wind Mountain been rung? Has Elder Jinchi fallen? | Hidden map one: Old Guanyin Temple |
| Is the Yellow-Robed Squire’s side quest finished? Has Fuban been defeated? | Hidden map two: Sahali Kingdom |
| Is the melon field side quest complete? Has the Bamboo-Hat Warrior been defeated? | Prerequisite side quest for Maitreya Buddha to open Mount Mei |
| Have you entered Hidden: Ziyun Mountain in the Webbed Hollow? Has the Dark Moon Demon Lord been defeated? | Hidden map three: Hidden: Ziyun Mountain |
| Have you entered Bishui Cave on Flaming Mountain? Has the Water-Avoiding Golden-Eyed Beast been defeated? | Hidden map four: Bishui Cave |
| Has Yang Jian fallen? Is the “Mind Root” in hand? | The direct prerequisite of the True Ending |
| Have you defeated the Great Sage’s Broken Body in Chapter 6? | The ending check point |
Closing and Related Pages#
The ending is the key theme of Black Myth: Wukong’s narrative: putting on the Golden Circlet is the absence of “Mind”, while refusing it is the return of “Mind”. Players on their first run are advised not to rush through side quests by checklist — get familiar with the main story and the world first; when you want the True Ending, use the checklist on this page to fill in each item.
