Maps and Navigation#
Map System Overview#
The game uses a semi-open map design, with each chapter being a relatively independent large region. The map is not displayed on screen, so players must navigate by landmarks, environmental clues, and Shrines. This design encourages players to observe the environment carefully and increases the immersion of exploration.
| Chapter | Region | Map Type | Estimated Size | Shrine Count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chapter 1 | Black Wind Mountain | Linear + branches | Medium | 8 |
| Chapter 2 | Yellow Wind Ridge | Semi-open desert | Large | 10 |
| Chapter 3 | Lesser Western Heaven | Multi-layered vertical | Large | 9 |
| Chapter 4 | Webbed Cave | Underground maze | Extremely large | 12 |
| Chapter 5 | Flaming Mountain | Linear + vertical | Medium | 7 |
| Chapter 6 | Mount Huaguo | Open area | Extremely large | 11 |
The size of each map is roughly proportional to its number of Shrines; the denser the Shrine coverage in an area, the more room for error you have while exploring. Chapter 6’s Mount Huaguo shows a surface count of 11, but hidden Shrines are included in that figure — 57 in total once all are activated.
Shrine System#
Shrines are the game’s travel points and save points. Once a Shrine is activated, you can fast-travel between any Shrines. The distribution of Shrines in each chapter has been carefully designed to ensure that players never stray too far from a supply point while exploring.
Shrine Activation Rewards#
| Activations | Reward | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Spirit ×500 | Currency |
| 10 | Mana Recovery Medicine ×5 | Consumable |
| 20 | Curio: Earth Talisman | Equipment |
| 30 | Pill Recipe: Thousand-Mile Swiftness Pill | Recipe |
| 40 | Spirit: Earth Sprite | Spirit |
| 50 | Achievement: Pilgrim | Achievement |
| 57 (all activated) | Achievement: Across Mountains and Rivers | Achievement |
Shrine activation rewards are settled by cumulative count; players going for full completion are advised to activate every Shrine they pass while pushing the main story, so as to avoid backtracking later to fill in gaps. Hidden Shrines are often the key source of Chaos-tier rewards.
Chapter One: Black Wind Mountain#
Black Wind Mountain is a region dominated by forests and mountain ranges, with a relatively linear map structure that nevertheless contains several branching exploration areas. Its main landmarks include Black Wind Cave, the ruins of Elder Jinchi’s temple, and a hidden cave on the mountainside.
Regional Breakdown#
| Region | Location | Shrine | Key Items | Hidden Elements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starting Forest Path | Southernmost | None | Starting equipment | Meditation Spot ×1 |
| Foot of Black Wind Mountain | End of the forest path | Foot of Black Wind Mountain Shrine | Spirit Treasure Chest | Hidden path ×1 |
| Deep Thicket | Mountainside | Deep Thicket Shrine | Spirit ×1 | Hidden cave ×1 |

| Forest Trail | Foot of the mountain → Deep Thicket | Opens after killing an elite enemy | 2-3 minutes |
| Secret Passage | Temple → Black Wind Cave | Find the hidden switch | 3-5 minutes |
| Cliff Climb | Outside the cave → Inside the cave | Permanently available once unlocked | 1-2 minutes |
| Back Gate | Boss Area → Foot of the mountain | Opens after defeating the Boss | 5 minutes (return trip) |
Chapter Two: Yellow Wind Ridge#
Yellow Wind Ridge is a semi-open desert region with vast dune fields and several oasis strongholds. The map design is freer, letting players explore at their own pace. The sandstorm weather system affects both visibility and movement.
Regional Breakdown#
| Region | Location | Shrine | Key Items | Hidden Elements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Desert Entrance | Southwest | Desert Entrance Shrine | Map Fragment ×1 | Hidden oasis ×1 |
| Wind-Eroded Canyon | Central | Canyon Shrine | Spirit ×1 | Hidden cave ×2 |

| Oasis Camp | Center | Oasis Shrine | NPC trading | Side quest ×2 |
| Sandworm Nest | Underground | Nest Shrine | Upgrade materials | Hidden treasure chest ×3 |
| Yellow Wind Sage’s Palace | Northern end | Palace Shrine | Key item | Hidden passage ×1 |
| Boss Area | Deep in the palace | None | Boss drop | None |
Weather System Effects#
| Weather | Visibility Effect | Movement Effect | Special Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear | Normal | Normal | None |
| Sandstorm | Reduced 50% | Reduced 30% | Continuous minor damage |
| Sand Vortex | Reduced 80% | Reduced 60% | High area damage |
| Night | Reduced 30% | Normal | Enemy attack +20% |
During sandstorm weather it is advisable to activate the nearest Shrine first and wait inside a safe zone for the weather to change, avoiding a head-on clash with powerful enemies in an area with no supplies.
Chapter Three: Lesser Western Heaven#
Lesser Western Heaven is a multi-layered, vertical map containing an above-ground temple complex, underground tombs, and floating islands in the sky. Vertical navigation is the greatest challenge of this chapter, and you need to make full use of jumping and Cloud Step.
Regional Breakdown#
| Region | Location | Shrine | Key Items | Hidden Elements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temple Front Court | Entrance | Front Court Shrine | Quest item | Meditation Spot ×1 |
| Great Hero Hall | Central | Great Hall Shrine | Curio ×1 | Hidden basement ×1 |
| Underground Tomb | Underground | Tomb Shrine | Upgrade materials ×3 | Hidden tomb chamber ×4 |
| Pagoda | High up | Pagoda Shrine | Key item | Hidden platform outside the window ×2 |
| Floating Island Cluster | In the sky | Floating Island Shrine | Legendary Treasure Chest | Hidden floating island ×3 |
| Fallen Buddha Hall | East side | Buddha Hall Shrine | Spirit ×1 | Hidden Buddha statue ×2 |
| Boss Area | Topmost level | None | Boss drop | None |
The floating island cluster in the sky is the part where it is easiest to get lost; it is recommended to activate all the floating island Shrines first, then look down from above with Cloud Step to confirm their positions relative to one another.
Vertical Navigation Techniques#
| Technique | Use Case | How to Perform |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Step Jump | Reaching high platforms | Cloud Step + jump |
| Wall Rebound | Vertical climbing | Wall + jump + forward |
| Ledge Jump | Hidden platforms | Ledge + precise jump |
| Plunging Attack | Fast descent from height | Mid-air + attack |
| Floating Island Travel | Moving between islands | Specific travel points |
Cloud Step is the core of movement in this chapter; mastering the landing cancel can greatly cut travel time between floating islands.
Chapter Four: Webbed Cave#
Webbed Cave is the largest underground maze in the game, with a multi-level cave network, spider-web passages, and underground waterways. The map is intricate, making it the chapter with the highest rate of getting lost. It is recommended to carry plenty of lighting materials and to carefully record the paths you have taken.
Regional Breakdown#
| Region | Location | Shrine | Key Items | Hidden Elements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cave Entrance | Entrance | Entrance Shrine | Lighting materials | Hidden side cave ×1 |
| Spiderweb Hall | Central | Hall Shrine | Spirit ×1 | Ceiling hidden passage ×2 |
| Underground River | Bottom level | Riverside Shrine | Legendary Treasure Chest ×1 | Underwater cave ×1 |
| Spider Nest | Deep inside | Nest Shrine | Upgrade materials ×2 | Hidden egg chamber ×3 |
| Venom Pool | West side | Poolside Shrine | Curio ×1 | Anti-venom materials ×5 |
| Violet Spider’s Palace | Deepest point | Palace Shrine | Key item | Hidden room ×2 |
| Boss Area | Behind the palace | None | Boss drop | None |
Maze Navigation Techniques#
| Technique | Description | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Torch Marking | Place torches at forks to mark directions already explored | ★★★★★ |
| Wall Scratch Marking | Leave combat scratches on walls as return-path markers | ★★★★☆ |
| Follow the Current | Water flow usually leads to key areas | ★★★★☆ |
| Judging Web Density | Places with dense spiderwebs are usually dead ends or traps | ★★★☆☆ |
| Sound Navigation | Running water = water source, hissing = spiders | ★★★☆☆ |
The underground river area of Webbed Cave has monotonous terrain and is where circling back happens most easily, so be sure to mark with torches. At forks that turn out to be dead ends, marking in reverse with scratches is the most efficient way to retreat.
Chapter Five: Flaming Mountain#
Flaming Mountain is a linear map with a mainly vertical structure; the path from the foot of the mountain to its peak is covered with lava rivers and flame obstacles. Terrain destruction is the signature of this chapter — some terrain changes over time or in response to the player’s actions.
Regional Breakdown#
| Region | Location | Shrine | Key Items | Hidden Elements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lava Zone at the Foot | Bottom | Foot of the Mountain Shrine | Fire-resist materials ×5 | Hidden lava cave ×1 |
| Flame Canyon | Central | Canyon Shrine | Upgrade materials ×2 | Terrain-destruction passage ×2 |
| Lava Waterfall | Upper middle | Waterfall Shrine | Curio ×1 | Hidden area behind the water curtain ×1 |
| Red Boy’s Camp | Upper part | Camp Shrine | Spirit ×1 | Hidden armory ×1 |
| Summit Platform | Top | Summit Shrine | Key item | None |
| Boss Area | Topmost level | None | Boss drop | None |
Terrain Change Mechanics#
| Change Type | Trigger | Effect | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lava Solidifies | Defeat a specific enemy | Opens a new path | Follow the newly appeared platforms |
| Bridge Collapses | Pass through a specific area | Blocks the return route | Note down an alternate route |
| Flames Go Out | Solve a mechanism | Reveals a hidden passage | Search for the mechanism’s location |
| Earthquake Fissure | After a Boss fight | Creates a new area | Explore the new fissure immediately |
Terrain destruction makes for a “flowing” map, and some shortcuts exist only for a short time. After passing through once, restock at a Shrine promptly, because collapsed bridges do not recover on their own.
Chapter Six: Mount Huaguo#
Mount Huaguo is the largest open area in the game and the main stage of the final chapter. The map stretches from the peach grove at the foot of the mountain to the Water Curtain Cave at its peak, and contains a large number of hidden areas and explorable landmarks. As the final chapter, its exploration rewards are also the most generous.
Regional Breakdown#
| Region | Location | Shrine | Key Items | Hidden Elements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peach Blossom Grove | Foot of the mountain | Peach Grove Shrine | Meditation Spot ×1 | Hidden peach tree ×3 |
| Waterfall Valley | Central | Valley Shrine | Spirit ×2 | Cave behind the water curtain ×2 |
| Monkey Troop Territory | Upper middle | Territory Shrine | NPC interaction | Side quest ×3 |
| Ancient Temple | East side | Temple Shrine | Legendary Treasure Chest ×2 | Hidden altar ×1 |
| Heavenly Court Entrance | Top | Heavenly Gate Shrine | Key item | None |
| Water Curtain Cave | Hidden | Water Curtain Shrine | Wukong’s legacy | Final secret ×1 |
| Boss Area | Highest point | None | Boss drop | None |
Full Hidden Area Summary#
| Hidden Area | Chapter | Unlock Condition | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elder Jinchi’s Secret Chamber | Chapter 1 | Defeat Elder Jinchi | Legendary weapon blueprint |
| Sandworm Vault | Chapter 2 | Defeat the Sandworm King | Epic Curio ×2 |
| Floating Island Immortal Dwelling | Chapter 3 | Collect 3 floating island keys | Chaos material ×1 |
| Spider Queen’s Chamber | Chapter 4 | Solve the spiderweb code | Legendary armor blueprint |
| Lava Secret Passage | Chapter 5 | Advance the story to after the Red Boy fight | Legendary armor blueprint |
| Water Curtain Cave Heaven | Chapter 6 | Gather all six roots | Wukong’s final legacy |
The unlock conditions of the hidden areas are mostly interlinked with the suspense left after the main story; the Water Curtain Cave Heaven, for example, requires gathering all six roots, and is the final objective that completionist players must fulfill.
Efficient Exploration Routes#
Below are the recommended efficient exploration routes for each chapter, which let you collect most items with the least backtracking.
Chapter One Recommended Route#
| Step | Destination | Collectibles | Estimated Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Starting Forest Path → Foot of Black Wind Mountain | Meditation Spot, Spirit Treasure Chest | 3 minutes |
| 2 | Foot of the mountain → Deep Thicket | Spirit, hidden cave | 5 minutes |
| 3 | Deep Thicket → Elder Jinchi’s Temple | Curio, hidden room | 6 minutes |
| 4 | Temple → Black Wind Cave Entrance | Key item | 3 minutes |
| 5 | Black Wind Cave exploration | Treasure Chest ×3, hidden passage | 8 minutes |
| Total | About 90% of full collection | 28-30 minutes |
Chapter Four Recommended Route#
| Step | Destination | Collectibles | Estimated Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cave Entrance → Spiderweb Hall | Lighting materials, Spirit | 5 minutes |
| 2 | Hall → Underground River | Legendary Treasure Chest, underwater cave | 8 minutes |
| 3 | Riverside → Spider Nest | Upgrade materials, hidden egg chamber | 7 minutes |
| 4 | Nest → Venom Pool | Curio, anti-venom materials | 5 minutes |

| Total | About 85% of full collection | 34-36 minutes |
Navigation Aids#
Since the game has no built-in minimap, the following methods can help you navigate better.
| Tool / Method | Description | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental Landmarks | Watch for distinctive rocks, trees, and buildings | ★★★★★ |
| Shrine Orientation | Shrines are usually on the main path | ★★★★☆ |
| Light Source Direction | Natural light usually shines from the direction of the exit | ★★★☆☆ |
| Water Flow Direction | Water flow usually leads downhill or to important areas | ★★★☆☆ |
| Enemy Density | Places with dense enemies are usually key areas | ★★★☆☆ |
| Community Map Resources | Consult detailed maps made by players | ★★★★★ |
The lack of a minimap is a double-edged sword, and community map resources are an important reference. In the early stage you can rely on landmarks and Shrines, then combine community maps in the full-collection phase to fill in gaps.
Common Navigation Problems and Solutions#
Below are the navigation problems players most often run into in each chapter, along with their solutions.
| Problem | Chapter | Occurrence Rate | Solution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can’t find the temple in the thicket | Chapter 1 | 30% | Walk along the right-hand cliff wall |
| Losing direction in a sandstorm | Chapter 2 | 45% | Wait in place or find cover during the sandstorm |
| Can’t find a landing spot among the floating islands | Chapter 3 | 40% | Use Cloud Step to search in the air |
| Circling around repeatedly in Webbed Cave | Chapter 4 | 60% | Torch marking + follow the current |
| Can’t find the way up Flaming Mountain | Chapter 5 | 25% | Look for the new path after lava solidifies |
The root cause of getting lost is mostly wandering at random without marking anything. Quickly confirming each crossroads once and leaving marks along the paths you have walked will basically avoid most circling problems.
