PvP Guide

Elden Ring’s PvP comes in two broad modes: invasions and the Colosseums. This chapter follows a “verified values + mechanical criteria” approach: any number with inconsistent community measurements or no reliable source is left out, replaced with criteria and trade-off logic, so you won’t be misled by outdated errors.

Level Baseline: The Community Standard of 125#

The PvP community’s consensus meta level is 125; Colosseum duels and tournament events are generally organized around this standard for builds and matchmaking, and the rest of this site’s PvP content follows the same baseline.

Around the 125 build, remember three stat-cap criteria:

  • Main attack stats (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, Arcane) start to show visibly diminishing returns around 60, with a hard cap of 99
  • Vigor has two soft-cap tiers: 40 and 60 — gains are steepest before 40, and the return on further investment past 60 is already very low
  • At level 125 the stat budget is limited; the core question of allocation isn’t “what else can I add” but “what do I dare cut”

Low-level invasions are a different ecosystem: builds are maxed around a few stats, and weapon upgrade levels are kept low to match the target region. There’s no single standard level for this play style; choose based on the popularity of your target region.

PvP Talismans: Verified Values#

The values in the table below are cross-verified across community sources and can be cited directly:

Talisman Real effect Acquisition and notes
Radagon’s Soreseal Vigor, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity each +5 The cost is taking 15% more damage; found at Fort Faroth in Caelid — drop along the eaves onto the wooden walkway and loot the corpse
Radagon’s Scarseal The weaker counterpart of the same talisman type Cannot be equipped together with the Soreseal; pick one
Green Turtle Talisman Stamina recovery speed +17.7% Underground chamber of Summonwater Village, east of Limgrave; opened with a Stonesword Key (it is an “underground chamber”, not “catacombs”)
Magic Scorpion Charm Magic damage +13% Comes at the cost of lowered damage negation; caster builds must weigh it themselves
Lord of Blood’s Exultation Attack power +10% when nearby enemies suffer blood loss; +13% at the upgraded tier Core of blood-loss builds; note the trigger is “nearby enemies bleeding”, not your own attacks
Dagger Talisman Critical damage +17% Behind Volcano Manor’s fog gate; needs two Stonesword Keys to open
Carian Filigreed Crest Skill FP cost -25% Purchased from the blacksmith Iji
Great-Jar’s Arsenal Raises maximum equip load Core loadout piece for heavy-weapon, heavy-armor builds

Three widely circulated legacy errors, corrected here:

  • “Lord of Blood’s Exultation = attack +20% on bleed” — the real values are +10%, +13% at the upgraded tier; the 20% figure is a game of telephone
  • “Dagger Talisman = attack +20% below 20% HP” — that claim mixes in red tearstone-type talisman mechanics; the Dagger Talisman’s real effect is critical damage +17%
  • “The Arsenal talisman raises HP and stamina” — Great-Jar’s Arsenal only raises maximum equip load; HP and stamina boosts are the job of other talismans

Stat Allocation: Criteria First#

Rather than memorizing a fixed table itemizing all eight stats, remember the allocation criteria first. The sample builds below only illustrate the criteria and are not official recommendations:

  • Strength (sample build): push Vigor near the 60 soft cap and Strength near its own 60 soft cap; derive Endurance from “equip load still lands in medium with full gear”, and fill the rest to meet weapon and talisman requirements
  • Dexterity (sample build): Vigor around 60, Dexterity around 60; on bleed weapons, raise Arcane only to the range where the weapon’s blood loss procs properly, instead of maxing it blindly
  • Mage (sample build): choose Vigor between the 40/60 soft-cap tiers, Intelligence around 60; fill Mind to meet your mana-pool needs, and budget roughly fifty percent extra mana when running Lusat’s staff
  • Universal criterion: at 125, both attack and survival stats revolve around soft caps — every point invested past the line is worse spent patching another shortcoming

Status Effects: No Universal Table#

  • Status buildup depends on the buildup of the weapon you hold and the target’s resistance; blood loss, poison, Scarlet Rot, and frost each have different buildup and recovery rates
  • Therefore there is no universal conversion like “a fixed number of hits to trigger”; the legacy cross-weapon universal values table has been deleted
  • The PvP mindset is trigger frequency: blood-loss builds chase the rhythm of steady procs, poison and Scarlet Rot suit attrition and pressure, and frost is for interrupting an opponent’s rhythm
  • Whether a specific weapon can proc status quickly — judge by that weapon’s status buildup stat and the target’s resistance; don’t apply any “universal hit count”

Staff Choice: Trading Off Two Glintstone Staffs#

A mage’s PvP staff choice is essentially a two-way pick:

  • Lusat’s Glintstone Staff: higher magic damage, at the cost of 50% higher FP consumption
  • Azur’s Glintstone Staff: notably faster casting — not a percentage boost, but a real difference in cast rhythm; FP consumption is likewise 50% higher
  • Both staffs require defeating Rennala before they can be obtained; you cannot plan for them in the early game
  • Selection criterion: pick Lusat’s for heavy single hits, Azur’s for initiative and casting feel
  • For incantation builds, specific per-incantation values lack reliable sources and no precise figures are given here; choose incantations qualitatively by coverage, FP cost, and cast speed

Rolling and Equip Load: Three Tiers Decide Life or Death#

  • Load tiers split into light, medium, and heavy: medium (30% to 70% equip load) is the standard mobility range; past 70% you’re at heavy tier, rolling visibly slower with only short hops
  • Light tier (below 30%) rolls farther; mobility-focused builds can deliberately keep load low
  • Exact roll frames per tier vary between community measurements; this page gives no precise frame counts; the practical rule is “rather one tier lighter than build pressed against 70%”
  • Shields are compared qualitatively by guard cost and parry ability: great shields have high guard strength and cheap blocks but give up parries; small and medium shields keep parry ability, with better mobility and fault tolerance

Invasions: Attrition Warfare While Outnumbered#

  • The invader’s healing resources are limited while the host side holds the numbers and home terrain; trading blows head-on is a losing game — the mindset is harass, attrition, and forcing them to scatter
  • Terrain criterion: steer fights into narrow corridors and elevation changes, turning “outnumbered” into “queueing up to die”
  • Against a turtling group, disrupt their ranged casters and healers first; don’t be the first to dive into the pile
  • Items like the Taunter’s Tongue affect the matchmaking experience; invaders who want clean, quiet duels can skip it
  • Popular invasion regions are chosen for terrain, not level: Stormveil Castle’s narrow doors and staircases, the Academy’s elevation changes, and the Consecrated Snowfield’s blizzard visibility are all classic “home-field picks”

Colosseums: Three Venues and Their Modes#

  • The three Colosseums are the Limgrave Colosseum, the Royal Colosseum of Leyndell, and the Caelid Colosseum; the latter two open as the main story reaches the capital and as you defeat Starscourge Radahn respectively
  • The 125 community standard was formed precisely around matchmaking events at these Colosseums; they are the current main stage of PvP
  • Modes cover 1v1 duels, multiplayer free-for-alls, and 2v2/3v3 team battles; duel mode usually bans healing items, while team mode rules are relatively loose
  • The opening bow is default community etiquette; skipping it is allowed, but it’s usually read as a provocation signal
  • The Colosseums apply their own damage corrections to players, so weapon attack values cannot be read directly as actual Colosseum damage

Criteria-Based Build Ideas#

Build around mechanical criteria; talisman values are in the verified table earlier:

  • Blood-loss build: meet the weapon’s Arcane requirement → bleed weapon → Lord of Blood’s Exultation (+10%, +13% at the upgraded tier); the criterion is “how often does bleed proc”, not raw stats
  • Caster build: Lusat’s (high damage, +50% FP cost) or Azur’s (cast speed, +50% FP cost) plus Magic Scorpion Charm (+13%, at a negation cost); the criterion is initiative and mana budget
  • Heavy-weapon build: Great-Jar’s Arsenal raises the equip ceiling, and the build still stays pressed back into medium load (30% to 70%); the criterion is “how many of the opponent’s swings does one trade eat”
  • Skill build: Carian Filigreed Crest saves 25% skill FP for a skill-rotation playstyle; the criterion is “can the skill be reused within a duel’s length”
  • Critical build: Dagger Talisman (critical damage +17%) paired with weapons that open critical opportunities easily; the criterion is “can you reliably produce parries or guard-break windows”

Advanced PvP Techniques#

  • Punish roll recovery: predict where an opponent’s roll lands and swing during their recovery — most PvP kills come from this
  • Baiting rolls: throw only the first hit of a string and punish the roll they commit — standard high-level mind games
  • Delayed rolls: against slow attacks and delayed grabs, wait a beat after seeing the wind-up before rolling; don’t hard-counter on pure reaction
  • Weapon switching splits into menu soft-swaps and quick-slot hard-swaps: soft-swaps don’t interrupt the current action but run slower; hard-swaps are faster but demand precise timing
  • Anti-turtle: circle behind (shields don’t guard the back), apply Scarlet Rot or blood loss, use piercing skills — even the cheapest guard fears status effects and backstabs
  • Anti-mage: never sprint in straight lines; close in using obstacles and diagonal rolls, forcing them into melee recoveries
  • Anti-colossal: don’t trade blows head-on; use your speed edge to attack during their recovery windows

FAQ#

  • Why do I keep facing ganks? Hosts can summon help; a home-field numbers advantage is the norm of invasions. For fair duels, go to the Colosseums
  • Can I drink flasks in the Colosseum? Duel mode usually bans healing items; team mode is less restrictive
  • Why does weapon damage swing up and down? PvP applies its own damage corrections; the same attack value plays out differently across modes
  • What about latency? Build your attack timing leads into muscle memory; don’t wait until you see the hit animation to decide your next move
  • Stats or mechanics — which matters more? At 125 everyone’s stats hug the soft caps; outcomes hinge more on load-tier management, recovery punishing, and composure

Versions and Balance#

Successive balance patches have repeatedly adjusted PvP-specific damage coefficients and popular weapons; for details see this site’s patch update history. All values on this page follow the current cross-verified community consensus and were not written to fluctuate with any single version.
