Multiplayer Mechanics Explained#
Elden Ring’s multiplayer carries on the Souls tradition - co-op summons, invasion PvP, and colosseum battles. This chapter explains the multiplayer mechanics, matchmaking rules, and practical tips
Multiplayer Basics#
In the Lands Between, multiplayer is not as simple as “opening a room”; it is a ritualized process built around summon signs and Furlcalling Finger items. All multiplayer relies on two things: first, the regional boss (main boss) of the target area has not yet been defeated, and second, both players sit in a similar level and weapon upgrade range. Once you defeat an area’s boss, co-op summoning is no longer possible in that area, though invasions and the colosseum are not restricted by this.
| Mechanic | Details |
|---|---|
| Co-op | Summon helpers through golden summon signs, up to 3 players per session (host + 2 helpers) |
| Invasions | Use Bloody Fingers or Festering Bloody Fingers to invade other worlds, up to 4 players per session (host + 2 helpers + 1 invader) |
| Colosseum | Official PvP mode - duels/free-for-all/team battles, not restricted by boss status |
| Password matchmaking | Setting the same group password lets friends match across level and upgrade ranges |
| Cross-region matching | Enable “cross-region matching” in the system settings, otherwise you can only connect to players in your region |
It must be emphasized that password matchmaking only narrows the gap; it never fully erases level differences. When the level gap is too large, the system automatically applies correction modifiers to the higher-level player’s HP, damage, stamina, and focus, letting both sides barely share the stage - but the actual feel will still be unbalanced due to stat differences. So when playing with friends, it is still best to keep levels and weapon upgrades close.
Multiplayer Items#
Every multiplayer action consumes the matching finger-type item, and how you obtain them decides when you can “go online”.
Co-op Items#
| Item | Effect | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Tarnished’s Furled Finger | Places a golden summon sign on the ground, waiting to be summoned as a helper | Obtained upon reaching the Roundtable Hold |
| Furlcalling Finger Remedy | Reveals golden summon signs on the ground; used to summon helpers | Bought from merchants, also restocked at the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold |
| Blue Furlcalling Finger Remedy | Reveals blue summon signs (Hunters and Hosts of Fingers); used to assist others | Bought from merchants |
| Tarnished’s Beast Hair | Material consumed when placing a golden summon sign (only used for signs, does not consume finger remedies) | Merchants near Sites of Grace across the world |
Invasion Items#
| Item | Effect | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Festering Bloody Finger | One-time invasion; can be bought again after use | Bought from merchants, cheap |
| Bloody Finger | Unlimited invasions, granted after completing Varré’s questline | Awarded after finishing the “Bloody Finger hunter Varré” quest tasks |
Passive Multiplayer Rings#
Beyond actively placing/selecting signs, two kinds of passive rings can pull you into other players’ worlds automatically.
| Ring | Effect | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Cipher Ring | When a Host of Fingers is invaded, you are auto-transported in as a “Hunter” to assist the host | Bought from merchants |
| White Cipher Ring | When you are invaded, automatically summons a “Hunter” to come to your aid | Obtained from the relevant NPC at the Roundtable Hold |
Note that the White Cipher Ring does not prevent invasions; it only calls for help when you are invaded, essentially turning a duel into many-on-one. If you just want to progress quietly, the most reliable option is playing offline solo, or avoiding the online state that allows invasions by never using a Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
Level and Weapon Matching#
Matchmaking ignores “story progress” and looks only at character level and highest weapon upgrade level. Here is a key concept: weapon matching only counts the single highest-upgraded weapon in your inventory, so even if you normally use a +0 starter weapon, once any weapon of yours has reached +10 you are placed in the high-upgrade bracket and can barely be summoned by low-upgrade players.
| Matching Dimension | Details |
|---|---|
| Character level | Host and helpers/invaders must be in a similar level bracket, otherwise stat correction kicks in |
| Weapon upgrades | Normal weapons +0 to +25, Somber weapons +0 to +10, converted between the two scales |
| Password matchmaking | Loosens level gaps, but uses “level-difference correction” to flatten both sides’ stats |
| Area boss | Co-op is only possible while the target area’s boss lives; once defeated, only invasions remain |
Recommended Multiplayer Levels#
Following the pacing of the Lands Between’s major regions, here are the level and weapon ranges where co-op and invasions are most active. Near these values you will most easily match with players of similar skill and progress.
| Region | Recommended Level | Normal Weapon Upgrades | Somber Weapon Upgrades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limgrave | 10-30 | +0 to +3 | +0 to +1 |
| Liurnia | 30-60 | +4 to +9 | +2 to +4 |
| Caelid | 50-80 | +9 to +12 | +4 to +5 |
| Altus Plateau | 70-100 | +12 to +18 | +5 to +7 |
| Leyndell, Royal Capital | 80-120 | +15 to +21 | +6 to +8 |
| Mountaintops of the Giants | 100-150 | +18 to +25 | +8 to +10 |
| Haligtree and Mohgwyn Dynasty | 130-150 | +25 | +10 |
A reminder: over-upgrading your weapon is the most common reason co-op summons fail. Many players are not high level but have fully upgraded weapons early, so low-level helpers simply cannot see their summon signs. If you are willing to be the “hype man” helping others clear the map, keep your weapon upgrades controlled for the target region.
Practical Multiplayer Tips#
| Tip | Details |
|---|---|
| Buff after entering | Apply ashes and incantations before the fog gate; once inside, helpers and the boss take their places, so buffs covering the whole fight are more cost-effective |
| Don’t bring overleveled helpers | The higher the helper’s level, the more boss HP and damage get boosted; picking similarly leveled helpers is actually easier |
| Let the host hold aggro in co-op | The helper’s main job is drawing the boss’s attention and creating damage windows; the host controls the rhythm |
| Clear mobs first when invading | Don’t rush in face-first; lure the mobs outside the boss room toward the host, create chaos, then strike |
| Bow before duels | Colosseum duel and invasion etiquette - bow to each other at the start, no crimson flask chugging, no cheap opening ambushes |
| Double-check password matching | Both sides must set exactly the same password (case included) and enable cross-region matching, or the signs will not appear |
| Fill gaps with Spirit Ashes | When no human helper is available, summoning ashes can also draw boss aggro, creating a “pseudo co-op” experience |
Team Roles and Duties#
Co-op victories usually hinge on role division rather than individual skill. Against high-difficulty bosses, sensible duty assignment beats everyone doing their own thing.
| Role | How to Play | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Host of Fingers | Advances the story, opens the boss door, controls the overall rhythm | Decides where to go and what to fight |
| Main damage dealer | Focuses damage with jump attacks, skills, and buffed weapons | Melts boss HP quickly |
| Support | Keeps buff incantations (like Golden Vow) and healing up | Raises the whole team’s margin for error and survival |
| Aggro tank | Uses ashes or high-poise weapons to hold the boss’s front | Creates safe damage windows for the DPS |
The biggest trap in co-op is the whole team drinking crimson flasks at once. The boss will punish everyone’s drinking animation with a burst, so agree on a rhythm - “the low-HP player drinks first while the others cover” - stagger the healing, and avoid a wipe.
Multiplayer FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do I need a membership for multiplayer? | Console platforms (PS, Xbox) require an online membership; PC (Steam) is free, but the game must be a legitimate copy |
| Does multiplayer affect achievements? | No, boss kills in co-op grant achievements/rewards identical to solo kills |
| How do I play with friends? | Set the same password; one player places a golden summon sign and the other summons with a Furlcalling Finger Remedy, or summon directly with a furled finger |
| Can invasions be fully turned off? | Offline solo disables them; once you use a Furlcalling Finger Remedy and enter co-op, invasions become possible |
| Why can’t I see my friend’s sign? | Check that passwords match, cross-region matching is on, and that you have not already defeated the target area’s boss |
| Why does the boss get tankier in co-op? | Each extra helper raises boss HP and damage; picking similarly leveled helpers softens this |
| What about high ping? | Switch to wired internet, play with same-region players, and learn to “predict attacks” rather than waiting for the animation to roll |
Advanced Multiplayer Thinking#
The multiplayer system is not just “finding help” - it is also a mirror for studying how other players fight. Across many invasions suffered and assists given, you can directly see how different levels and builds make trade-offs against the same boss, which sharpens your judgment more than grinding Runes ever will.
For invaders, long wars of attrition are often the biggest advantage - an invader never carries more crimson flasks than the host, but the invader can pick “hit and run”, using cliffs, poison swamps, and elevation drops to wear the other side down. For hosts, three things done well - setting up buffs in advance, splitting aggro with ashes, and staggering flask timing - are enough to turn a disadvantage around.
