Maps and Regions#
“Beyond the fog, lies the Lands Between.” — game opening
The most breathtaking — and most discouraging for newcomers — thing about Elden Ring is its ocean-wide open world. This page gives you an “exploration map of the whole game”: not a drawn map, but one that tells you “what’s where, where the pitfalls are, and where is worth going.”
World Overview#
The Lands Between is divided into several large regions that are both independent and interconnected. Each has its own ecology, enemies, and main-story arc.
| Region | Traits | Suggested Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limgrave | Starter grasslands | 1-30 | Chuyun Cave, Stormveil entrance |
| Weeping Peninsula | Southern coast | 20-40 | Haligtree-related secrets |
| Liurnia | Lakes and academy | 40-60 | Academy of sorcery |
| Caelid | Scarlet wasteland | 60-80 | Starscourge, rot |
| Altus | Highland battlefield | 70-90 | Reinforcements, secret passages |
| Leyndell | Royal capital | 80-100 | Main story hub |
| Mountaintops | Snowfields | 100-120 | Prelude to the endgame |
| Haligtree | Hidden | 120-150 | The final challenge |
Limgrave#
The game’s starting region, a weave of grasslands, hills, and scattered caves. It teaches you basic combat and exploration.
| Location | Content | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Church of Elleh | Merchant Kale, witch event | ★★★★ |
| Gatefront Ruins | Spectral steed quest, teleportation | ★★★★★ |
| Stormveil Castle | Main story stronghold, boss fight | ★★★★★ |
| Catacombs | Spirit summoning bell | ★★★★ |
| Various caves | Smithing stone materials | ★★★ |
Beginner Tips#
Grind your level to around 20 in Limgrave first, collect the basic gear (shield, Ashes of War, spirit calling bell), then challenge Stormveil Castle.
Weeping Peninsula#
The southern cape below Limgrave, and the most important “leveling catch-up zone” of the early game.
| Highlight | Notes |
|---|---|
| Sacred Seal | Oracle Sacred Seal, a must-have for incantation builds |
| Smithing materials | Abundant smithing stones and upgrade materials |
| Hidden caves | Clues to Haligtree-related secrets |
| Dungeons | Safe leveling through the early-mid game |
Tip: Clear the peninsula before Stormveil Castle, and your level and gear will carry you smoothly through the early main story.
Liurnia of the Lakes#
A land of sorcery centered on the vast Liurnian lake, with the Academy of Raya Lucaria at its heart.
| Location | Content | Boss |
|---|---|---|
| Liurnia of the Lakes | Lake ruins, merchants | Crone of the Lake |
| Academy | Main story stronghold | Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon |
| Lake isle | Hidden sorceries | — |
| Mistwood | Advanced magic area | — |
Liurnia Tips#
- You need the “Academy Key” to enter the Academy through its side gate.
- Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon is a key mid-game boss; defeating her unlocks the “respec” feature.
- The lake is full of water creatures — mind their properties.
Caelid#
A wasteland overrun by Scarlet Rot, its reddish-brown earth dotted with mutated creatures — a high-difficulty mid-game region.
| Location | Content | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Starscourge battlefield | Pontiff Radahn | Requires opening the Shadow Realm entrance |
| Haligtree area | Hidden depths | The ultimate challenge |
| Rot swamp | Scarlet Rot | Highly contaminated danger zone |
| Beast Sanctum | Advanced incantations | Hidden boss |
Scarlet Rot in Caelid drains your HP continuously — always stock up on cures. The enemies here are tough across the board; come at level 60 or higher.
Altus Plateau#
A highland region reached via the Grand Lift of Dectus — the veteran warrior’s supply line and battlefield.
| Location | Content | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Capital gates | The entrance into Leyndell | Main story |
| Encampments | Plenty of experience | Leveling |
| Haligtree branch | Hidden route | Exploration |
Leyndell, Royal Capital#
The game’s core capital — a colossal city beneath the Erdtree and the key gateway to the endings.
| Location | Content |
|---|---|
| Erdtree city | Prelude to the final boss fight |
| Capital streets | Abundant quests and secrets |
| Secret passages | Multiple hidden routes |
| Forge | Equipment upgrades |
Mountaintops of the Giants#
A frigid zone of wind and snow, the battlefield before the sky city and the final boss.
| Location | Content |
|---|---|
| Giant smith | Empowering Great Runes |
| Snowy summit | Final main story region |
| Inner graveyard | Hidden questline |
Haligtree / Hidden Areas#
Some hidden areas require completing specific questlines or unlocking the corresponding “Shadow Altar” to enter.
| Hidden Area | Unlock Condition | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Haligtree | Complete the Haligtree questline | Malenia |
| Crumbling Farum Azula | Main story progression | Skeletal great bird |
Recommended Exploration Route#
The following “exploration route,” from shallow to deep, gets you the most resources in the least time:
- Full clear of Limgrave (catacombs included) → Level 20+
- Full clear of the Weeping Peninsula → Levels 30-40, basic gear complete
- Stormveil Castle → Unlocks early main story
- Liurnia + Academy → Get respec and sorceries
- Caelid (level permitting) → Get holy equipment and incantations
- Altus Plateau → Capital → Mid main story
- Mountaintops → Sky city → Endgame
- Haligtree and other hidden areas → The ultimate achievement
Teleport Points and Fast Travel#
- Sites of Grace are free teleport points — activate each one as soon as you enter a new region.
- Activated Grace locations can be viewed on the map.
- Some Graces sit in remote corners; activating them once enables map-wide teleportation.
Exploration Tips#
| Tip | Notes |
|---|---|
| Jumping from heights | Check for a Grace below first, just to be safe |
| Mounted exploration | Far more efficient for covering large areas |
| Watch the map edges | Marked boundaries hint at hidden areas |
| Use the telescope | Scout enemies and chests from a distance |
| Place map markers | Record unexplored caves and bosses |
Closing Thoughts#
The joy of an open world is that “you never know what’s hiding behind the next hill.” Take this map logic with you, stop wondering where to go, and go conquer your own Lands Between.
How Regions Connect#
The regions of the Lands Between are not a simple patchwork — they link naturally in many ways:
| Connection Type | Notes |
|---|---|
| Main roads | Natural transitions along the highways |
| Hidden passages | Linked via caves and false walls |
| Teleport points | Some hidden teleports |
| Broken bridges/lifts | Must be unlocked |
Understanding how regions connect helps you design more efficient exploration routes and avoid wasted backtracking.
Fast Travel and Grace#
Sites of Grace are not just checkpoints — they are teleport hubs:
- Activate every new Grace you discover.
- Click activated Graces on the map for instant teleportation.
- Planning your teleports well saves enormous time.
Exploration Priority Suggestions#
Efficiency-minded players can explore in this order of priority:
- Main-story Graces and key landmarks (keep progress moving).
- Unlock as many Graces as possible (easy teleportation).
- Clear caves and catacombs (gather materials).
- Explore hidden areas and questlines (rare equipment).
How to Avoid Getting Lost#
- Use map markers to record important locations.
- Follow the golden guidance of Grace for the main story.
- Towers/landmarks make natural wayfinding points.
- When lost, ride to high ground and read the terrain.
Master these and the open Lands Between is no longer a maze. May every expedition bring you scenery and treasure worth the journey.
