Combat System#
Combat in Elden Ring builds on the traditional Souls formula by adding jumping, mounted combat, and the Ash of War system — attacks are more free-form than ever, and the pairing space between weapons and skills is unprecedented. This page compiles mechanic explanations verified across multiple sources along with practical combat tips, and corrects a few widely circulated misconceptions.
Melee Basics#
Attack Types#
| Attack |
Input |
Use Case |
| Light Attack |
Left mouse button |
Fast damage output, combo pressure, minimal recovery |
| Heavy Attack |
Shift + Left mouse button |
Stronger single-hit damage and stance damage; can be charged for even more power |
| Jumping Attack |
Light/heavy attack while jumping |
Best stance damage output — the core damage tool of jump-attack builds |
| Running Attack |
Light/heavy attack while sprinting |
Gap-closing opener that quickly closes distance to a target |
| Crouching Attack |
Light/heavy attack while crouching |
Sneaky attack, ideal for ambushes and invasions |
| Dual-Wield Attack |
L1 when holding one of each weapon type |
Grants exclusive dual-wield combos — sustained output rises significantly |
Stance Damage and Criticals#
| Mechanic |
Description |
| Stance damage |
Every attack accumulates stance damage — once full, the enemy enters a heavy stagger |
| Critical hit |
When an enemy is staggered, walk up front and press the critical button — massive critical damage; the core payoff of heavy-weapon playstyles |
| Backstab |
A light attack landed directly behind an enemy is also a critical — extremely efficient for clearing trash mobs |
| Jump-attack advantage |
Jumping attacks build the most stance damage — dual-wielded greatsword jump attacks can break the posture of most bosses quickly |
Stat Caps and Leveling Basics#
- PvP dueling players default to level 125 — this is the long-standing community meta level, and matchmaking is easiest around it.
- Primary stats see notably diminishing returns after around 60 points — dumping more into a single stat loses efficiency fast.
- 99 is the hard cap for every attribute; no allocation method can exceed it.
- Vigor has soft caps at both 40 and 60 — HP gains slow significantly after each threshold. Beginners should raise Vigor past 40 first, then consider offensive stats.
Defense and Dodging#
Encumbrance and Rolling#
Rolling is the single most important defensive tool, and your encumbrance tier directly determines how well you roll. One important note: the precise i-frame tables circulating online are unreliable — different communities measure them differently, so this page only lists tier differences, not frame counts.
| Encumbrance Tier |
Equipment Load Ratio |
Roll Behavior |
| Light |
Below 30% |
Longest roll distance, fastest recovery |
| Medium |
30%—70% |
Standard mobility band — the mainstream choice for most builds |
| Heavy |
70%—100% |
Rolls become noticeably slower, reduced to short hops — dodging large attacks is very difficult |
| Overloaded |
Over 100% |
Cannot roll at all, only slow walking |
Recommendation: Stay at medium or lower. The rolling cost of heavy load is too steep — unless you use the Great-Jar’s Arsenal to raise your max load, don’t build above 70%.
Blocking#
| Shield Type |
Qualitative Traits |
| Small shield |
Lightweight and fast, most forgiving parry window — the first choice for parry specialists |
| Medium shield |
The balance point between defense and weight — most versatile; prioritize models with high physical damage negation |
| Greatshield |
Best damage negation and block stability, but heavy — always confirm your encumbrance tier isn’t affected when building |
| Fingerprint Stone Shield |
The exception among greatshields — extremely high guard boost, the signature equipment of “shield-push” playstyles |
Parrying#
Parrying deflects an enemy’s attack and leaves them heavily staggered — an advanced technique. Follow up immediately with a critical for the highest defensive-counter payoff in the game. Different tools have noticeably different windows, but there is no community consensus on exact frames; start with the widest-window tools and trust your feel.
| Parry Tool |
Difficulty Rating |
| Small shield |
Widest window — easiest to learn |
| Medium shield |
Narrower window — demands more precise timing |
| Curved sword |
Curved-sword-exclusive parry animation — relatively easy |
| Parry dagger |
Dagger-exclusive parry — relatively easy |
| Ash of War: Golden Parry |
Easiest — comes with a golden parry flash and a forgiving window |
| Ash of War: Stormwall |
Easy — another Ash of War parry option |
Ashes of War#
Ashes of War are the core weapon customization system — every infusable weapon can swap its skill, and you can change them anytime at a Site of Grace or a blacksmith.
| Ash Category |
Examples |
Use Case |
| Physical |
Lion’s Claw, Bloody Slash |
High-damage physical output and gap closing |
| Magic |
Magic Circle, Carian Greatsword |
Melee support for Intelligence builds |
| Sacred |
Sacred Blade, Shared Order |
Counters undead-type enemies |
| Poison/Blood |
Poison Mist, Seppuku |
Applies status buildup |
| Mobility |
Bloodhound’s Step, Quickstep |
Fast repositioning to escape or close in |
| Defensive |
Barricade Shield, No Skill |
Shield enhancement |
Affinities#
Ashes of War also determine a weapon’s affinity — changing its attack type and stat scaling:
| Affinity |
Scaling Tendency |
Best For |
| Heavy |
Highest Strength scaling |
Pure Strength builds |
| Keen |
Highest Dexterity scaling |
Pure Dexterity builds |
| Quality |
Scales both Strength and Dexterity |
Str/Dex hybrid builds |
| Magic |
Highest Intelligence scaling |
Caster-melee hybrids |
| Fire |
Strength-scaling priority |
Early-game physical fire |
| Flame Art |
Highest Faith scaling |
Faith warriors |
| Lightning |
Highest Dexterity scaling |
Dex build supplemental damage |
| Sacred |
Highest Faith scaling |
Holy damage that counters Those Who Live in Death |
| Poison |
Strength and Dexterity — adds poison buildup |
Poison builds |
| Blood |
Arcane governs bleed buildup efficiency |
Bleed builds |
| Cold |
Intelligence governs frost buildup |
Frost builds |
| Occult |
Highest Arcane scaling |
Arcane builds |
Ranged Combat#
Bows and Crossbows#
| Weapon |
Qualitative Traits |
| Shortbow |
Fast to fire, usable while mounted — first choice for mobile harassment |
| Longbow |
Better range and per-shot power — charged shots excel at long-range sniping |
| Greatbow |
Massive arrows with strong pressure — excels at interrupting enemy rhythm |
| Crossbow |
Load-then-fire rhythm — suits defensive, positional play |
| Hand crossbow |
Lightweight, one-handed — good for quick off-hand supplemental damage |
Sorceries and Incantations#
| Type |
Example |
Qualitative Traits |
| Glintstone sorcery |
Glintstone Pebble |
Basic magic — fast to cast, low FP cost |
| Gravity sorcery |
Rock Sling |
Has physical strike property — strong stance damage |
| Fire incantation |
O, Flame! |
Close-range flame spray — extremely fast startup |
| Lightning incantation |
Lightning Spear |
Ranged lightning attack |
| Ancient dragon incantation |
Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike |
Summons area lightning strikes — a great crowd-clearing tool |
Staff Selection#
| Staff |
Traits |
| Lusat’s Glintstone Staff |
Higher sorcery damage — at the cost of 50% more FP consumption |
| Azur’s Glintstone Staff |
Significantly faster casting speed — also costs 50% more FP |
Both staves only become obtainable after defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, and progressing the story to the corresponding point — use a regular glintstone staff early on, then swap once your sorcery build comes together.
Mounted Combat#
Fighting on Torrent the spectral steed is a system of its own — extremely effective against both large field enemies and groups of small mobs.
| Mounted Move |
Input |
Notes |
| Mounted attack |
Light/heavy attack |
Sweeps and thrusts with one-handed weapons |
| Mounted sprint attack |
Attack while sprinting |
High-damage charge |
| Dual-wield mounted attack |
L1 |
Mounted slash exclusive to dual-wielded weapons |
| Dismount attack |
Attack right as you dismount |
Carries the stance-damage benefit of a jumping attack |
| Mounted dodge |
Dodge button |
Lateral horse sidestep |
| Advantage |
Notes |
| Mobility |
Torrent is far faster than walking — you can kite enemies that struggle to chase |
| Double jump |
Torrent can double-jump — reaching places impossible on foot |
| Height advantage |
Attacks from above hit enemy weak points more easily |
| Dodge distance |
Mounted dodges cover great distance — but taking a hit staggers you, so don’t get greedy |
Status Buildup#
Status buildup speed depends on the weapon’s inherent status property and the enemy’s resistance — bleed, poison, rot, and frost each have their own independent buildup and decay, and no single universal numbers chart applies. The “unified buildup values” tables circulating online are unreliable; actual performance depends on the specific weapon against the specific enemy.
| Status Effect |
Qualitative Traits |
| Bleed |
Deals a massive chunk of HP damage once full — high-Arcane weapons and the Blood affinity build it faster |
| Poison |
A damage-over-time attrition status — great for kiting playstyles |
| Scarlet Rot |
An upgraded poison — longer duration and higher total damage |
| Frost |
Deals one burst of damage when full, then leaves lingering effects — pair with the Cold affinity |
Combat Talisman Quick Reference#
All effects below have been verified across multiple sources — mix and match freely. Two commonly garbled claims are corrected as well:
| Talisman |
Effect and Location |
| Radagon’s Soreseal |
+5 to Vigor, Endurance, Strength, and Dexterity — at the cost of 15% more damage taken. Found in Fort Faroth in Caelid: jump from the roof onto the corpse at the end of the wooden walkway |
| Radagon’s Scarseal |
A weaker version of the Soreseal — mutually exclusive with it; you cannot equip both at once |
| Green Turtle Talisman |
Boosts stamina recovery speed by roughly 17.7% — a general-purpose sustain talisman. Found in the underground crypt of Summonwater Village in eastern Limgrave; requires a Stonesword Key to open — note it’s a crypt, not a “catacomb” |
| Magic Scorpion Charm |
+13% magic damage — with the drawback of lowered damage negation |
| Lord of Blood’s Exultation |
Raises attack power by 10% when nearby enemies suffer blood loss, or 13% at +1 — the core talisman of bleed melee builds |
| Dagger Talisman |
+17% critical damage — located behind the fog gate in Volcano Manor, requires two Stonesword Keys. The old guide claim of “20% attack boost below 20% HP” is wrong — that belongs to the low-HP damage boost talisman (colloquially “Red-Feathered Branchsword”); they are not the same thing |
| Carian Filigreed Crest |
Reduces skill FP cost by 25% — a must-have for skill-focused builds. Purchased from Smithing Master Iji |
| Great-Jar’s Arsenal |
Raises maximum equipment load — the key talisman for wearing heavy armor without leaving the medium tier |
Player versus Player#
Invasions and Duels#
| Mode |
How to Trigger |
Notes |
| Invasion |
Use a Festering Finger |
Enter someone else’s world or get invaded yourself — often a disadvantaged fight against multiple hosts |
| Duel |
Draw a red summon sign |
One-on-one consensual duels — usually concentrated in agreed areas like the Academy Gate |
| Arena |
Visit the arenas near the Roundtable Hold |
Official PvP venues — supporting deathmatches, team battles, and free-for-alls |
Dueling Tips#
| Tip |
Notes |
| Latency awareness |
Online play has input delay — time your rolls and attacks with lead |
| Load control |
Stay at medium load or lower — roll distance matters enormously in duels |
| Skill choice |
Bloodhound’s Step long dominated the dueling meta and has since been nerfed — still viable as a survival tool |
| Sorcery choice |
Fast-cast spells like Carian Slicer and Swift Glintstone Sword apply heavy pressure in duels |
| Endure |
A skill that briefly boosts physical damage negation — excellent for trading blows up close |
Combat FAQ#
| Question |
Answer |
| Why can’t I land a critical? |
Stance damage isn’t full yet — heavy weapons and jumping attacks build it faster |
| How do I time parries? |
Press parry the instant the enemy’s weapon is about to connect — practice on the knights near the Roundtable Hold first |
| What’s a good equipment load? |
30%—70% (medium) is the standard mobility band — below 30% gives longer rolls, but the speed tier difference is not a dramatic one; choose based on your build |
| Can Ashes of War be changed? |
Yes — swap them anytime at any Site of Grace; overwritten ashes can be re-acquired from a blacksmith |
| Can sorceries and incantations be used together? |
Yes — equip a staff in one hand and a sacred seal in the other, and switch castings mid-combat |
Advanced Techniques#
- Stance damage planning — Every weapon has a hidden stance damage value. Heavy weapons (greatswords, warhammers) and jumping attacks build it fastest — land a critical the moment it fills; far better than two extra slashes.
- Attack property targeting — Standard, strike, slash, and pierce physical properties work differently against enemies of different body types and body parts — keep a secondary weapon with a different property for specific matchups.
- Aggro division — In co-op, the boss’s target switches between players — one person holding aggro up front while the other damages from the side is far steadier than both players dogpiling.
- Casting timing — Cast sorceries and incantations in the gaps of enemy combos — a boss’s heavy stagger is the only safe window for long incantations.
- Guard counter — After a successful block with a medium or greatshield, immediately follow with a heavy attack to perform a guard counter — both damage and stance damage are substantial.
Matchup Scenarios and Responses#
| Scenario |
Recommended Strategy |
Notes |
| Invasion (outnumbered) |
Use terrain to split the fight — pick enemies off one by one |
Never trade blows head-on with multiple hosts |
| Duel |
Bow at the start, wait until your opponent is ready |
Healing early violates duel etiquette |
| Being chased after invading |
Retreat to a safe spot first, then summon help with a finger |
Keep your distance while jockeying |
| Ranged mage matchup |
Circle pillars to dodge spells — close in once their FP runs dry |
Keep a mobility ash like Bloodhound’s Step on the off-hand |
| Greatsword/great-hammer matchup |
Roll into dual-wield jump attacks — never get greedy |
Manage your stamina bar carefully |
Combat Control Details#
Lock-On and Camera#
| Technique |
Notes |
| Switch lock-on target |
Actively switch targets in group fights — avoid lock-on sticking to already downed enemies |
| Cancel lock-on |
Cancelling lock-on against huge bosses is more flexible — easier backstabs and positioning |
| Chase camera |
Keep the camera forward when chasing fleeing enemies — prevents ambushes from behind |
Switching Skills and Spells#
In combat you need to switch fluidly between staves, sacred seals, and melee weapons — a main-hand weapon plus off-hand casting tool covers nearly every situation:
| Switch Operation |
Purpose |
| Main-hand weapon slot swap |
Seamless switching between melee and ranged weapons |
| Off-hand casting tool |
One hand a sacred seal, one hand a staff — sorceries and incantations ready anytime |
| Quick gear swap |
Preset equipment loadouts in advance — swap in the matching resistance talisman before a boss fight |
This “multi-weapon synergy” habit is what separates veterans from average players — worth deliberately practicing early on.
Co-op Coordination Basics#
In co-op, the boss’s target switches between players — sensible role division greatly reduces the whole party’s damage taken:
| Coordination Point |
Notes |
| Damage and aggro split |
One player holds aggro head-on, the other damages from the side |
| Revival rhythm |
Clear nearby mobs after a teammate falls, then revive them with a Festering Finger |
| Buff sync |
Open with a buff like Golden Vow — apply party-wide bonuses before entering the boss room |
Tackling High-Difficulty Bosses#
| Approach |
Concrete Method |
| Learn the wind-ups |
Every boss’s combo has fixed startup animations — memorize them and most attacks can be rolled on prediction |
| Reserve resources per phase |
Phase-two move sets change drastically — bank plenty of healing and FP before the fog gate |
| Status attrition |
Bleed, frost, poison, and other statuses work on bosses too — one full buildup pays off handsomely |
| Elemental counters |
Swap to fire, lightning, holy, or magic weapons based on the boss’s weakness — the damage gap is dramatic |
